Ive got a stem with a 8x1.25 thread that has stripped. Was thinking about re-tapping it to the next size. But that looks like M10. Which i think will be too big. Im not very good with imperial sizes, What would the next size up be in imperial?
Anyone ever gone down this road before?

you could get an m8 helicoil kit , it should contain everything you need to repair the thread , used one in the past n the repair was pretty good , got be done right though or the coil will thread out sometimes, not a problem just annoying, superglue or thread lock on the coil sorts it :daumenhoch:
or the alternative is something i'm about to do , low temp aluminium welding ,i'll do a destroyityourself thread ;D, got a stem with the same problem , just can't find my bloody blow torch at the mo ,

5/16 is the nearest imperial size mate, Id consider 10mm , it shpuldnt be that much of an issue going up, if the cap screws are a bit too big, the heads i mean, you can always cylindrically grind them (angle grinder and use fingers to turn the diameter of head down) to fit into the counterbored holes in the stem cap. Hope you get it sorted mate.

Gary, is it a handlebar clamp bolt, or a steerer tube clamp bolt?
Also, is it completely stripped out all the way through?
-
It's a steerer tube bolt, it's not stripped all the way, I did think about getting a longer bolt. But not sure if I'd trust it.

I did exactly that on my cruiser - no problem at all.
Is it a fairly meaty stem? If so, I wouldn't worry too much.

Im not sure i understand Rob, Did you just leave it with 1 bolt?
I think I will drill and tap it to M10, Looked at helicoil kits and it looks like you have to drill the helicoil bigger than 10mm for a m8 bolt.
-
No mate, I fitted a longer bolt. I did run a tap through it just to clean things up but there wasn't any real need.
I wouldn't use a helicoil myself.
How many unused threads are in that hole compared to how many stripped ones? If it's similar, just go with the longer bolt - you know how we all over tighten everything, it'll be fine.

Cheers I'll have a measure up :daumenhoch:

steerer doesn't do much work anyway Gaz. look at the old quill stems, they were shite, but adequate, really, one bolt will piss it on a clamp on. you worry too much!

Had some trouble tracking down a M8 X 30mm bolt, You would think this would be easy but normally these bolts have a 13mm dia head. I needed a 11mm dia head, Found some on chainreaction cycles, But the head was still slightly too big for the hole. Well after some kitchen engineering I have a bolt that does the job.
Here are the tools I used :LolLolLolLol:

Bolt in the middle is how the 2 outer ones started, Difficult to see but enough machined off to make them fit. Just need to give a quick coat of gloss black and that's it. Now have a useable stem :daumenhoch:
