Title: 1982 loopy PK Ripper broken seat post disaster (seattube repaired)
Post by: senzo milano on January 27, 2015, 07:04 PM
The seat post in my 1982 loopy PK Ripper is broken off... really a disater

Serial is PK 59xxx

How to repair and remove the old seat post out of the tube  ???

(http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa366/renken2000/iphone063_zpse9e36bf9.jpg) (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/renken2000/media/iphone063_zpse9e36bf9.jpg.html)

My solution is , remove the complete seat tube and weld a new one in position...

Underconstruction  ;)

Wow I really hope you know what your doing as it's not an easy job to do. Snapped seat mast needs a complete new one for it to be right. Hope it works out Partick.

Best of luck Patric. I hope you manage to get it fixed. Here's my VDC Changa without it's seat tube - scary stuff!

thats what i did a couple of years ago and he was having trouble sourcing a replacement tube or a drill bit long enough to drill out a bit tube. still have my ripper with half a seatpost rammed down as far as it will go stuck in there.

Nice one Patric  :daumenhoch:

Maybe there is a reason behind it but why didn't you remove the whole seat post to the bottom bracket and replace it all like Andy had done on his vdc?

The main thing is the frame lives to see another day instead of going on the scrap heap  :daumenhoch:

What's the plans for it mate ?

The reason to keep à piece of THE Seat tube ,and dont weld iT till THE bb was on advice of hè welder. Because hè told me by the temperature of THE alloy welding the BB could be  damaged.
Crimping and deforming of the bb  :-\
So i choose to take no risk  ;)
Plans are THE questions ???   Painting or coating ???

What do you think
Joff.   :)

I understand Patric , im not a welder so i wouldn't know . I guess alloy is a whole different ball game to steel , maybe if you had put some BB cups in , it would stop the the BB from deforming while he welded it   :-\

My dream bike as a kid was a Baby Blue loopy ripper so i would be getting it done Baby Blue if it was mine  :smitten:

Im sure it will turn out great whatever you decide mate  :daumenhoch:

Yes but what do you think...

Painting or powder coating ... Coating is à bit thicker in layer , so iT cover THE welds more  :)

I'd go Powder Patric if your riding it , mainly for the reason it is more durable etc as opposed to covering welds  :daumenhoch:

Leave it raw, it's been repaired so what gives it character.

It also keeps it honest, that is, somewhere down the line some poor sod won't pay top wack if it's sold on.

i'd go powder in baby blue with brown forks  :smitten:

It is what it is and no amount of powder will hide that weld but at least it won't be so in your face  :daumenhoch:

Its not to hide the repair welding... but its about the Ripper welds  :smitten: there so nice..

and if you coat it   :-\ it will cover the weldingcurfs much more....  ;)
