Right drop is tweaked but I've straightened worse

These are for my Mike Tag tribute/replica, Didn't think I'd ever get a set of old FBM forks.

Given the forks abit of resto. Only used big vise, paint stripper, Small wire brush and one of them metal scourers so far. All paint stripped.
The fookers were browning as I was washing them down. If I could get an even colour I'd be tempted to just clear coat them. But the legs have dark patches in the middle like the metal is stained.

Here they are having a soak in a citric acid bath.

After the citric soak, Think I will just clear coat them and see what happens, If I don't like it. Off to SBD they go :daumenhoch:

Hopefully it stays dry over the weekend, And I can get in the garden and give them a few coats of clear.

Well gave them a coat of clear. I think it's a very good finish if I do say so myself.
But I'm not 100% convinced I like the look of them, Cant put my finger on it, Just something :-\

You can see the black stains in this one, Suspect it's where the legs are held whilst the bends are applied.

Will have red bars though no matter what.

The dark mark on the forks Gary are where in fabrication they've not polished that part of the tubes for welding - you can get rid with a wire brush.

Not now I've clear coated them, I didn't use any sand paper when stripping them or preparing them. Only used a steel pan scourer and Autosol. Then used wire wool and white spirit before clear coating them. Didn't want an over prepped look. Ed got his bike sand blasted and although I think it looks really cool, The effect is too uniform for what I wanted here. Hope that makes sense.

they would have looked better with the frame if you had have cleared them in the 1 st pics . they look too damn clean now . lots more laquer may help a little . oh - kinda similar to the 2 nd pic . they d look good gloss black if not .

Wire brush wouldn't make em look uniform - they use em on the tubes pre-welding. Clear-coated from factory are exactly the same as this - the only diff being that they leave the weld 'burns' on em. Stripping the forks removed this - you can put em back with a blow torch but it's tricky to get it looking 'normal'.

I thought about using a blow torch, I 've got one in the shed somewhere I use for plumbing, But like you say Dan getting it to look normal is the issue. I've had conversations with SBD before and he said they normally start to rust under clear coat. Might rub through the clear in a few places and give them some chips and see what happens in a month.

you can pin prick the clear for the creepoing roots of rust look . it d look mint if you did the same process to the frame as you ve done with the forks .

a federal frame i had was rawed , scored with a grinder all over messily but uniformly , left outside for a day or 2 then cleared . the score marks glinted under the clear ., looked good.

know what you are saying on the shot blasing Gaz ... over time it would maybe have rusted nicely ... but it was a bit too uniform.

I've been using it as a anchor on my yacht :LolLolLolLol:
Ste acted as a facilitator and grabbed me it Gary - will have to see if it weighs more built up than my SOB.

Sort of 1998 Rich - it wasn't called the AoD till around late 99/2000 - just called 'FBM Frame' till then.
