Title: Convert plastic hub to metal looking?
Post by: adigraham on March 05, 2015, 05:27 PM
Hi all

Excuse the lame question, I am sure it's an easy one to answer!

I have the option to buy a set of tuffs and Metal hubbed rear, plastic front.

Is there a way to make them look the same as i don't like the look of them so different?

Cheers

Adi

leave them alone . mixed sets with ally rear and non ally front were issued in that style together.

If they're on a bike that's from around 85 onwards then 50/50 sets are fine.  those kool kap things look pants on fronts other than the gold Graphites anyways  :daumenhoch:

Kool kaps are good like Rob says on new graphites, they can be good on normal tuffs if you put the extra effort in and spray the plastic hub centre silver first.

I think I have seen some newer kool kaps that have the pressed centre (almost like a metal hub side)
which will remove the need for spray paint!

I never liked the look of the placcy hubs either, particularly on a 50/50 set, era correct or not!

Do what you like, but you're only going to devalue a 50/50 set mucking about with kool caps

If you really want the 'metal hub look' but don't want to stretch to an OG set, you could always flog the ones you got and put kool caps on a new, cheap, sealed bearing set?

They do suck! you need to sell the tuffs you have and go for a proper alloy hubbed set. There are plenty about in black if thatds the colour you have  :daumenhoch:

AAAAAH! the holy grail of mags.....a pair of white alloy hub tuffs that are actually white....and with no stress cracks round the hub!! I literally bought a set last week, they are not white...a bit creamy but have NO cracks. My last set were quite beige and had the usual stress cracks. You will pay double what a black set cost! It all depends on how anal you are about era correctness or just correctness.   :daumenhoch:

I have nearly started crying!

I never had a bmx as a child as too much money, the skyway ta owner was a guy from the bottom of my road who could wheelie for over a mile!

I promised myself I would build one, taking ages to get the parts let alone the wheels!

How much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking?

I paid £220 which was quite strong....but try finding a nice pair! I don't like them when they get bleached and aqua blasted....leaves the surface nasty and rough, I would rather have them untouched and a bit off white!  :daumenhoch:

start with a 180 grit (quite rough) to get the worst off then a 320,600 then 800 after that 1200 depending. it's quite a lot of rubbing but only 4 rims. t cut also shines them up afterwards!  :daumenhoch:

All depends on how you have built the t/a! Blue comp 111's or blue kenda/panaracer etc, just make sure they have a tanwall/skinwall! or you could go for whitewalls but I personally hate them   :daumenhoch:

im not seeing white tuffs with all blue tyres looking that great . i think repop comp 3 s . fat on the front / thin on the rear . i kinda like ladies shopping tyres on white tuffs . its all they look good on . just too damn thin .
