Title: Hoffman 1 inch Superfork help??
Post by: EDBANGER on May 03, 2015, 04:27 PM
I've bought another TAJ frame and fork primarily so I could stick the super fork and hoffman stem on the TAJ I've already built.  Now the stem that came with them was a 1 inch clamp on.  The forks however are threaded at the top with 14mm drop outs (not ground out)?  Are these forks for use with clamp on threadless headset or have a just bought some threaded forks with a clamp on stem thrown in?  Due to the 14mm dropouts I would thought they would have been past the point of quilled stems.   I'll put some pictures up when I get home to help the investigation if needs be.

Super forks have a threaded section at the top of the steerer for a compression nut, the headset & stem sits under that, the steerer should be longer than a normal threaded fork if you look at it again.

yeah there just regular 1inch forks ED,hoffman were still putting them on bikes up to '97,superforks were extra's-think threadless only came standard when they switched to 1+1/8 headtubes

By the picture posted the steerer tube is far too long to be regular 1" threaded, as I said before they are 1" aheadset super forks. Insectbones posted a pic of the earlier type, which still used a threaded headset but with a clamp on stem   :daumenhoch:

Right then Mr fugazi, I've got my Hoffman clamp on for them. What do I need headset wise to attach the sucker to the bike?

Best way to tell is just look down the steerer, if it's a thick machined tube you've got no chance of getting a stem down you know they're clamp on! You need a 1" aheadset, bit thin on the ground nowadays! You'll have to do a bit of hunting, various bike co's made them. DNA used to make a nice one with thick cromoly cups, I had a few & they were never any trouble  :daumenhoch:

OK so quick google under "1 inch threaded ahead set" this looks to be about the closest thing I can find

Nope - you need a threadless set, not a threaded.....

As rob said 1" threadless aheadset. Now I come to think of it I might still have one of those DNA headsets I said about before, will have a dig about tomorrow   :daumenhoch:

Right then.  I've been closely inspecting the nut that came with the forks and the fork thread.  It seems there's a slight ding at the top of the fork........

Do you think that little ding could be the reason the top nut I've got doesn't thread on?  If so what are my options?  It's only slight?  Should I force the top nut on?  Try and skim the top of the fork?

Have you got the rite top nut? The ding doesn't look much. You could try clean the thread with a needle fill then try put it on with a bit of copper grease

Think you want 1 1/8 stem for that

Or if their 1" a quill stem

Definitely 1 inch and definitely the right top nut.  I'm gonna try the needle file to try and tidy it up a bit.  Might even invest in a thread file.  The plot thickens.

Those forks are ment for a quill stem. I'm not sure hoffman did a a version like that for 1" clamp on. I'd like to see the top nut

The steerer tube length should reveal all. Anything with a clamp on stem will be way longer than owt with a quill stem, regardless of its headset configuration.

The steerer tube length is 7.5 inches from where the crown race sits.  I'm led to believe these are super forks specially made for the TAJ frame in 97.

Here's the top nut

Like I said...... :LolLolLolLol:  There was actually two versions of the 1" aheadset super forks, the type EDBANGER has & ones that look the same as the first 1 1/8" super forks with the updated dropouts.

Booooooom.  Got it sorted.  Guy at work has a home garage that makes the majority of commercial garages look shoddy and poorly equipped. We used a thread file to clean up the fork thread and checked the actual nut with a vernier gauge and found it was slightly distorted.  Squashed it a bit in a vice to put it right again and her she is.  Gonna stick them on today.

Cool, what headset did you get?

I had a pair of 1 inch kosher forks with a DNA headset on the frame previously so I just used that.  I decided to make up a vector set of decals so I could finish the super forks properly. I did a test print onto paper and I'm pretty pleased with the result. Just waiting for my vinyl come now to do them properly.

First print out onto vinyl.  What do you think?   Original decals next to my repop effort.
