So, as most of you who know me, I try to get the maximum looks out of my builds, with minimum cost....this Robinson build is no different.
I wanted a rear caliper in red on it, and after seeing a thread of Andy's (DTTDB), where he'd bought some paint and got his wheels done, I decided that this was the way to go for me.
A already had a spare copy MX1000, which is a front - the rear had been used on a race bike, so it was surplus, and didn't matter if I fooked it up. I have a spare rear spindle, so I ordered the paint off eBay (£12 posted), and went for it.
The caliper is raw alloy, I don't think lacquered, so took the gamble of not prepping it.
I whacked the first coat on about 10 mins ago, it will get a couple more, and a coat of lacquer, or 2.

Cool, love a bit of diy
-
Looks good to me Dan :4_17_5:
-
Remember to stick the bits in an oven at 100c for an hour or it will chip off like crazy.
-
Good job Dan i was wanting to buy that paint but they said postage to me in northern ireland would be £28 ffs,
-
A couple more pics, after a 2nd coat....
I've ordered some decals today off Del for this, and it will be getting a good bake.

I used that shit on a brake caliper. It was a lovely blue colour when I sprayed it and then when it came out of the oven it was a fookin horrible colour and still chipped off like a twat!
Fookin horrible stuff that "nono"

that was my experience with it, no doubt somebody who knows better than me will tell me I did it wrong and mustn't have followed the instructions like they invariably do!
Hope it works out for you Dan, honest :LolLolLolLol:

I didn't read the instructions, just shook the can and sprayed it on. :LolLolLolLol:

They look decent Dan :daumenhoch:
Worth a go and tbh a brake caliper shouldn't see much 'chip' action :-\
-
they don't do gold though...only blue, red and purple!

When I rebuilt the caliper it chipped.
When I threaded the cable through the caliper it chipped.
Just looking at the caliper it fookin chipped.

:LolLolLolLol: I'll take your word for it Nick :D

Put some lacquer on it, and it will be as hard as nails.
-
I'm sure they'll be reet mate ... Andy's rims look sweet! :4_17_5:
No if that's not an invitation for some Rich Devilock shinnanigans than I don't know what is! :LolLolLolLol:
They do look good to far ... 8)

I'm persevering with this little project.

Hey, don't knock it Lee, if it works, just think of the flipping potential you'll get from it. ;)

I've used that paint loads of times with great results but u don't need to put it in the oven.. but a warm environment helps

Just being extra safe, I'll whack a lacquer on it too. :daumenhoch:
-
Look great so far Dan when is the part when you fook em up :LolLolLolLol:
I am sure they will be fine but if they chip a bit so what nearly all calipers on riders are chipped a bit anyway :daumenhoch:

60 mins, 100c :daumenhoch:

When another garage brought a car to me with a problem that they couldn't fix they would say you don't need to check this, this, this, this and this because I've already done that... it must be something else!
I'd take no notice what so ever of their comments and start from the beginning... 9 times out of 10 the fault was something they had checked already...!
Everyone has their own way of doing things, some folk are just better at the basics.
My philosophy is always give it a go, if you fail you ain't the first to do so and you wont be the last!
I didn't have a good nights kip last night so I'm feeling a little emotional today. :'(
If this post make no sense at all just keep scrolling...
P.S. all this talk of chips and oven temperatures is making me hungry!!
-
These have come out really well, a slightly different colour than they went in, but hardly noticeable. I knocked the 2 arms together, and they didn't chip.
I'm still going to lacquer them though. :daumenhoch:
-
Lacquer them in bubble wrap :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

Good man Dan.
Guess that makes you better at the basics than Nick. :LolLolLolLol:

More of a DIY Paint it like Anodise; it's come up pretty good :daumenhoch:
-
Bad news on this is, although there seems to be no chipping, the colour has gone a slightly more orange colour from curing in the oven, but again, I'm not that gutted, as it's for a rider only.
This pic is with a coat of lacquer on.
-
Well I've assembled the caliper, added Del's decals, and fitted it to the Robbo. It's a more orangey colour than I wanted, but all the other parts are different shades of red too, so I reckon I can live with it.
It's cost me about £16 too, a fraction of a pucker MX1000 in red.
