Title: Black and Chrome.
Post by: Gnarlyscoots on June 13, 2015, 10:37 PM
I have been putting a bike together over the past few months and have been stuck on what chainring to fit. I have a silver Takagi fitted at present, which I had stripped and anodised clear. The frame and fork is chrome (that is pretty much the only colourway I like on frames for some reason lol), the rims are NOS and have the lightly polished look to them, the hubs are chrome, the spokes are chrome, the calliper is chrome, the cable is black, the bars are chrome, the lever is chrome, the seat clamp and stem are chrome, the headset is chrome and the tyres are black/skinwall.

So, as i said, I am stuck on the ring. Do I get it chromed or keep it silver? The cranks are chrome and the disc is black, with chrome bolts.

My thing though is this. I have recently seen a lot of builds that are 'blinged' with chrome and polished out parts, with a touch of black on them, and they just look so lifeless. They look like supermodels on catwalks, and that is just not me to be honest. I do have a yellow seat and yellow grips for it which aren't fitted yet so that may just break it for me but at the moment, I just don't want to go on with it.

Does anyone feel like this when they look at these type of builds? Does it make sense what I am waffling on about  ;D

OG finish every time for me.  You can't polish a turd, but you can chrome it ;)

:LolLolLolLol: I spent the afternoon polishing a stem then knocked it back.... then polished it...... then knocked it back further. couldnt make my mind up which i prefered.   :-\

In the end i thought polishing is for carpet queens and i dont do them so knocked back it stayed

Personally i reckon a chrome crank and ring with a black disc would look shite.

I like black and chrome together. On their own is fine. But if you're doing it chrome, do it ALL CHROME 8)

I think it needs something a bit chunkier...... PPP or Proneck to match the heftyness of the arms? Slots in the chainring aren't doing it for me. Or perhaps a solid spider?

Hmmmm may just be me but i have never like the way some rings cut across the smaller bcd holes and the small gap between the inside slots of the ring and the outside of the disc  :-\

OCD?

I love lifeless looking supermodels on catwalks  :smitten:
A chrome/polished powerdisc and a black chainring with polished teeth always looks good  :daumenhoch:
I agree that a chainring and powerdisc with no holes might look better. Pro Neck chainrings look mean.

You maybe onto something there Bert  :daumenhoch:

For some reason, the Tiger stamp on the disc is stamped on the 130 bcd side fitment, part of the reason why I went with a 130 ring. I also went with a black disc because everyone goes with chrome/polished and a black ring. No offence to you or your builds Andy, I just find that combination a little boring  :daumenhoch:

Anyways, I have a PPP ring that I can get chromed, or strip it and lightly polish it, but I will have to strip the cranks down to flip the disc around  :(

What about a Sugino/Takagi Lite ring ???

Fair comment Terry, we all like different things on our builds. I've never been a fan of the fat/thin tyre combo, even if it was factory spec on some bikes. Each to their own. One of the reasons why i love this bike building lark. So many options/combinations  :daumenhoch:

How about ditching the disc idea altogether and going with a silver/chrome 4-spoke Redline bubble font or Tuf Neck chainwheel? Not sure how that would look with the Bullseyes but that would break up the bling a bit.

chrome on chrome on chrome looks too blingy - using a satin silver or polished part adds some texture / layer, but you can only do it to one part. I think you've got it right as it is, albeit I agree with the comment on the  bolt holes being partially covered! The black of the disc is spot on with the black Bullseye lettering.....

Thanks for the input so far guys, I appreciate it  :coolsmiley:

I do have a first gen Profile spider that came with the cranks but I prefer the look of a powerdisc them. I managed to strip down the cranks earlier today and flip the disc around on the crank axle. I just need to now strip the red off my NOS PPP ring and get that fitted  :daumenhoch:

I will get some pics up when I have done it.

The pedals are 2nd gen Bullseye. Silver bodies with black cages. I like the black powerdisc and might yet go with a black ring. I will strip the red off the PPP that I have, and just hand polish it very lightly to bring out the original finish, see what that looks like first.

Agree, a black chain ring and power disc will highlight the crank arm and chrome chain ring bolts :daumenhoch:
