I had my first go at an indoor skatepark at the weekend and I loved it, I was riding a 1997 Haro Zippo. The bike was ok, but someone let me have a go on a modern Haro 500.1 and this felt so much better than my bike.
I want to keep the zippo for ride outs and get a more modern bike for park riding.
So what would be a good starter bike? Could I get something half decent for £100-200? The lads that I spoke to at the park, told me to get a second hand one as there's some real bargains to be had.
I really know nothing about newer bikes and need putting in the right direction.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Wethepeople arcades come up proper cheap, great all rounders. Don't get swayed by people banding around the phrase custom regarding new school, changing the pedals grips and seat on a stock complete doesn't make it a custom and worth more, in fact most of the time they take a stock bike and put wänk xposure parts on it in bright colours, a custom new school is built from a frame you can only buy as a frame, but you do find them dressed in stock parts from a complete where some lad has just bought a frame

Steve, £100 will buy a lot of secondhand new school bike mate for trying in a skatepark :daumenhoch:
Most new school rides around £350-400 end up on ebay for a ton or less and usually the yoof can't be arsed to post them, so set your eBay search for a radius you are prepared to drive and keep and eye out for something.
Look for as much cromo in the frame as possible and branded parts. If you spot something, put a link up and we'll give you a nod if it's any good :daumenhoch:
-
Cheers Spen, I'm aching like mad today, I hit the floor hard before you guys arrived.
-
This is a good starting point

I live in Aylesbury so could pick it up for you and give it a good service ready to bring it along to MK? ???

21" top tube as well for the taller rider :daumenhoch: (have no idea how tall you are though) ;D
-
Cheers pickle,
I'll still look around for a bit, and I have to wait till pay day this month.
I did find this after Jaymz mentioned the arcades

cracking brand mate, make really nice bikes, should be able to get a 3-5 year old one in budget.
Look at FIT as well, basically S&M

agreed, proper cheap
-
That's nice but it's right at the high end of my budget, if the last of my bits sell over the next week I'll in touch with him.
-
Be aware it's mostly hi tensile material.
-
Do you know what kind of set up you want , short & snappy or something a bit longer & mellower?
-
Steve I suggest you blag a few goes on other bikes and note the geometry to see how you get on with the them :coolsmiley:
For instance my Wethepeople Zodiac is a 20.75" tt but a slammed 13" rear so it is pretty snappy, my park Retrogoose is a 21" tt and 14" rear so a little more sluggish and finally my race Retrogoose was a 21.5" tt and 14.5" rear so terrible on a quarter pipe but sweet on a track....... ???
What I'm saying is in this instance, an extra half inch can make all the difference
-
I want something that's easy to ride and will help give me confidence.
What would you guys say would be best for that, short and snappy or long and slow.?
I can't remember the fellas name, but a lad let me ride his Haro 500.1 on Saturday and that felt really nice.
-
It was Will (wdj38) on here's Haro you tried Steve :coolsmiley:
Look up the geometry on their website and there's your start point mate. Definitely try a few others - I'd lend you my Wethepeople Zodiac while I'm on holiday but I'm taking it with me unfortunately :-\

Yes I remember now, he got his username from his ebay account name. Hard to remember everyones name first time out, I met quite a few people that night.

His real name is Mike ... but he prefers Will... like Spen's real name is Master Yoda
-
I answer to most names and have been called a lot worse :)
-
Sorted with a very nice S&M, 95% done, just need some pedals and grips on payday then all sorted :)
-
Sounds good, get a pic up!
-

top bombing that :daumenhoch:
-
Looks nice that perfect for late nights in an old warehouse
-
Result there Steve - see you at a draughty warehouse in a shitty part of town soon mate :2funny: :daumenhoch:
-
Looking forward to finishing this and giving it a ride. I'm even changing cars so I can get to more rides.
-
Looking good :daumenhoch: better cut the cable down a bit though!
-
Yeah it is a bit long!
-
Cracking bit of kit that Steve
-
Yeah its seriously lovely, can't wait to have a spin on it. I am happy just looking at it at the moment.
-
Can't go wrong with the shield! What's the t/t size?
-
score!
-
Can't go wrong with the shield! What's the t/t size?
Not sure, but it looks quite long
-
tops that Mr nut :daumenhoch:,
big leap from the zippo , you'll find it a lot better for the nights out with the depraved :daumenhoch:
-
Great choice :daumenhoch:
-
I didn't really even choose that model, just got offered it and really liked it so went for it. Even my handbrake was impressed. She loves oldskool bikes and has no interest in the new ones, but she loved the look of this one.
-
welcome to the new school appreciation club :daumenhoch:
-
What would be good pedals and grips to go on this bike?
I want to get correct modern era parts, but I don't know a lot about new skool bits, need to be inexpensive too, I don't have loads of money to throw at it.
-
Nice, decent bike for your first new schooler :daumenhoch:
ODI longnecks for grips and odyssey twisted plastic pedals, bit kinder on the old shins ;)
Neither will break the bank :daumenhoch:
-
Thanks, just looking at them both, the twisted pedals are available in some ace colours, especially the limited edition ones.
-
The Oddy twisted are great pedals, grip like shyte to a blanket as well :daumenhoch:
