Been thinking about a project for a couple of years but done nothing about it  :-[ until now  :D

I'm going to need some low rolling resistance tyres, knobbly joblies are way too lumpy for what I need. Ideally they need to be pre 86. Any decent suggestions ?

Also some super smooth rolling hubs,  ceramic bearings would be sweet but not sure which ones.

You want something a little different Ash? What about something like a laser Trac tyre?

Those the ones with the thick grey strip down the middle ?..
-
Yep. Think bendycat had some a while back

-
Thinking about it are they also a wheel chair tyre ?.. They could work well I think.

-
In 84 I had a set of white walls, remember them being quite popular around then

-
Got a pair of solid green sucker stylee ones if you want something really odd. Not the best resistance wise I should imagine though  :D

-
				Especially in the wet  :LolLolLolLol:

Were those white wall's Raleigh ?
-
No they weren't raleigh, Can't remember the make but they were 20 x 1.75 , I'm sure I bought them from whitehawks in 84, they were fitted to my Araya 7x with Shimano hubs that Mick built for me.

Get some of those big things snoopy has on the fat goose  :daumenhoch:

THey were Kenda, Ash, and gripped spot on  :daumenhoch:
-
Looks are not essential for his as function is key, if they fast (looking) I'm interested  ;D

-
I've got a pair of Kenda whitewalls if you want them Ash.
Personally I rode with Michelin whitewalls bitd, the tread was much nicer and more like the Mitsuboshi stadium's

LMK if you want them  ;)

				What about Comp Ramps?

Yes mate but not an upside down frame though, will be a Quadangle complete with full fairing. Full on GPV  :4_17_5:  I hope  :LolLolLolLol:

Some great choices of tyres here. Thanks for all the replies  :radbmxsmilie: :4_17_5:

:daumenhoch: cool. If you plan to actually run it I would be more concerned with braking than super special hubs  ;)

-
				get pools on. super sliks

Might also be worth avoiding era correctness in favour of safety at speed if you're gonna have a go
-
I'll definitely be riding it or at least that's the desired plan, not I somehow think I won't be going all that fast  :LolLolLolLol:
Brake wise front and rear was a standard requirement for all GPV bikes, I'll be going for something a little more modern for the actual rides and then switch it back for era correct if I take it to a show.

Inspired and started by the OM  :daumenhoch: if I remember he produced the extreme TV show too.

				Legend and pioneer  :daumenhoch:

And it's my original GPV decal that got me thinking lol.

-
That's awesome. :coolsmiley: I should have kept one of the turbolites I had and done one too

-
I'm getting really worried about this 83 quad build of yours Ash...It's gonna make mine look positively agricultural !
A great thread ... Some cool ideas lads!  :4_17_5:
-
It's a different 83 frame I'm using for this project mate  :LolLolLolLol:

-
Phew...... That's a relief mate!!!  :LolLolLolLol:

I think Cheng Shin whitewalls are the best ones. The white area is larger than some other brands. They are now marketed/advertised and labelled as Raleigh tyres on the packaging. Search for raleigh shopper tyres or something like that and you'll find them. Roughy £20 a pair for 1.75's. The good news for non raleigh lovers is that although the tyres are advertised and packaged as Raleigh, the tyre itself is stamped only as Cheng Shin - no mention of Raleigh anywhere.
If i remember correctly, the two white/orange PK Ripper builds both had Cheng Shins. I have them on my T/A and they look great

You thought about a Sturmey archer hub brake Ash? From what little I know about this sort of thing you will get far more rolling resistance from an incorrect tyre and pressure than any well maintained hub, even a shitty low end one.

-
I do love a set of whitewalls .... Agree with Andy ... They look great and bitd we all loved them round my way ... Retrospect had OG ones a few years back on his site.

The thought had crossed my mind and need to look into that a little more. The only thing I was concerned about is that I'm probably going for wheel disc covers on the rear so need to check it would work.

vee hubbers are fast, like a motorbike tread
-
If you are seriously going to use it in anger as someone said before, go for a new tyre, 100 psi.

Raleigh shoppers wouldn't be up to it IMHO and I definitely wouldn't use an old tyre.
-
Narrower rims & tyres would give you less rolling resistance but it does limit your bmx tyre choice quite a bit.

a 1 3/8th rim and these tioga 1 3/8th power blocks would be decent

I'll be using it more to tick it off the things to do list rather than in full anger  :LolLolLolLol:
