Title: Is this a restore or refinish?
Post by: Old School on September 22, 2015, 03:33 PM
Hi guys,
Just got this from oldscool on here ;)

Can anyone tell me if this is worth giving an Oxalic bath?

Or is it a shot blast and re-chrome?

There are plenty of scratches and marks and pits.
I would say there are chrome chips too.

Also, the part that joins the bottom bracket with the looptail looks to be slightly concave - is this normal or heavy use??

Cheers as always :daumenhoch:

I'd say its ALWAYS worth a citric acid bath and then re-assess  :daumenhoch:

Anything you can do to save the original finish has to be good... give it a good 24 hr sock in 500g og Citric and give it a good Peek'ing and see how it looks :-)

I wholeheartedly agree, shot blast and pc is last resort!
Is citric acid same as Oxalic acid?
How do I remove the decals?
Does anyone on here do repop decals?

Use citric acid & it won't hurt the decals bud. Takes a bit longer than oxalic but is safer to use, should be a good "how to" by oldschoolace in the tech stickies  :daumenhoch:

Big tub

500g of Citric Acid off of Ebay

as hot as water as possible ... enough to cover the frame ... but bricks in around the frame to cut down on the water you need

mix in the Citric acid

soak for 12hrs ... check it ... another 12hrs if needed

good peek polish

sorted

Try and save the original finish and decals  :daumenhoch:

Looks to be better condition than my pug before I started   :-\

To remove chrome properly you have to have the process reversed by a plater, shot blasting it isn't the best way to go AFAIK.

While it's in the bath, give the rusty spots a rub with a toothbrush  :daumenhoch:

Citric works great. I've got a thread on here somewhere on a rusty as fook Catweasle, it came out lovely.

I didn't like it shiny though, so chucked it in the garden to go rusty again  ;D

The box section looks like it might have had a kickstand attached at some point, that or something which has caused the concave. You might also want to check the fork rake because they look a little off-set going by the angle of the headstock tubing.

Thanks guys, ace advice as always!
Mark, how do you mean the forks are offset and what am I looking for?
Sorry if it's obvious!

Couple of other questions:
How do I remove the decals?
Does anyone on here do repop decals?

Cheers :daumenhoch:

Old school use a heatgun or hair dryer to remove the decals, then if there is sticky residue after you remove them spray wd40 on it and use a white scourer pad as it wont scratch the F&F DONT USE GREEN, on the resto stickys you will see where it says dels new website or something hes the main man for decals top class job ;)

From the picture angle it looks like the fork legs have been bent back.

Mmmm, interesting, it does look different!!
There's a serial number on the forks....does this help to know if they're Silver Streak forks?

Used to be. They are DB MKS pedals which were not factory fitment.

Will check when I get home, cheers mate!
Could well be tbh, as Sparky has already pointed out the forks aren't angled correctly anymore either!!
See photo at top of thread, then his photo- BIG diff!

As said before...use a hairdryer or heat gun to soften the decals and peel them off but clean the residue with thinners/ solvent. Del is the man for decals...del@del-cals.co.uk
