I've recently picked up an early 80's PK Ripper frame. After a little research the serials look to be a bit sketchy and don't always work out. The serial number is PK61348, so does that not make it a June 81 348 off the line?
Also, need to source some forks at some stage. Am i looking for the undrilled, unstampted version and what would i expect to pay for them and how often do they come up?
Thanks in advance!
Jonny

My 2 SE looptails both have serial numbers that start with 5 and they were definately purchased in 1982 by the previous owners. As for the forks,keep an eye out on the usual forums/ebay or try emailing Vert-ego as he had a bunch of NOS ones a while back.

Very basic guide although there are a whole bunch of anomalies with SE and the PK's pre 85.
Pre serial = 79
2xxxx = mid 1979
3xxxx = 1980
4xxxx = 1981
5xxxx = 1982
6xxxx = 1983
7xxxx = 1984
The original paint and decals will also help to establish the year. As for LG's just make sure they have 3 holes, gas release hole in the right place and 3 welds inside the drop and solid on the outside, prices go from £100-£160

Thanks for the info! It didn't come with decals but the finish is the bare aluminum. Did those frames only come in a certain year and as for decals on that finish was it just the baby blue with darker backing?

Great info Ash, I always understood there was no sequence to the serial numbers as they just took whatever was in the bin and the was topped up regularly before it was empty :daumenhoch:.

Original decals also play a major part Marty. Pre serials and 79's had different decals to 80's and then 81 on different still. Subtle changes in the shape and size of the seat mast decal and many of the 79's had first gen heavy shadows on the down tube PK decal and generally had higher placement.

Good stuff Ash, it's great to learn something about old stuff :daumenhoch:
I might even think about a PK Ripper to finish off my collection now I have a better idea of what year the frames are from :daumenhoch:

I asked the OM when eating a burrito on his couch whilst he massaged my feet, he told me, now don't know if he was winding me up but they never did a code per year, might have been per run but not year
