Title: TNT Longfello prototype *FINISHED*
Post by: ED209 on February 21, 2016, 11:00 PM
So I bought a TNT Pro from the states for my daughter for £150 ... she loved it ... but it was a survivor frame and I didn't want to restore it as it had all its own decals.

Nicky Custurdtits decided to part with a TNT Longfella ... and I already had had some interest my Pro the frame ... so I did the deal on mine and bought Nicks...

Speaking to Nick and then Daz who used to own it I had the full downlow on its history and prototype status ( due to its fat tubed rear triangle on a early Longfellow frame )

Here's the frame as Daz got it ...

[attachment=1]

and how Daz built it ...

(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/n258/ODFLYER/100_1700.jpg)

and Nick's advert which one me over :-)

[attachment=2]

I got it built up quick as my daughter was keen to get riding but I've got some plans to stamp my own mark on this frame  :smitten:

I have to concur, I'd look like those 7 year kids you see that've stolen their dads Cube mtb from the shed and are trying to ride it while looking cool

There are a few metallic blue TNT's floating around in various threads on the museum. Quite an unusual colour for TNT's.

From memory, the forks had the common tyre rub on the inside of the legs which is why I got them powdered.  I was a bit of a mid race bike slut and I have never enjoyed riding anything more than a TNT.  The only thing that came close was a factory team hyper (once again, with fatter stays) but the TNT still blew it away

Enjoy the build, its one of those frames that looks fast standing still, awesome bikes  :daumenhoch:

just thought i'd add that the exact team hyper has appeared in the for sale section, what are the chances of that?

The early TNT hubs were hollow axles, mine are the same as these (blue label) but have hollow axles

I'm sure MSJ will be along to put us right as he is the man with the knowledge ;)

As with all Mid School history exact change over dates are a bit sketchy, but below is the info I pieced together while building my HFD. Also keep in mind that hardly any of these hubs have survived with all their original hardware, although Ed your hubs look like they have got proper 90's hardware including nuts and washers.  :daumenhoch:

The very early TNT hubs (pre 90's) had hollow axles and were USA made (24tpi). They shared hardware with brands like GT and DK (as well as others). Both your guys hubs appear to be late 80's as the have the flat TNT logo on them. Pic below is for decal reference as hardware isnt original.

(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v513/standardracer/Brentpics005.jpg)

The 90's versions had solid axles and were still USA made (24tpi). These had the same hardware as Crupi, JP, Hyper etc. The decals on these had the 3d TNT logo.

(http://bmxmuseum.com/forsale/tnt3_copy10_blowup.jpg)

In the early 2000's TNT stopped making Revolvers and Derringers. They started back up a few years ago but the shells are slightly different now and the hardware is 26tpi (Made in the east). These have no decals and the new TNT dynamite logo etched on them. The old decals also dont fit nicely on the new version as the flat area in the middle is different widths. Original TNT hubs are the same front and rear.

(http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee232/FREESTYLE-FREEK/TNT_REVOLVER_HUBS_zps9a0ba628.jpg)

They also recently made a batch of the first gen hubs that look like son lites but thankfully have made some subtle changes to these as well.

Mine are the same as the top picture of Jon's. Large flange (revolvers) with red TNT stickers but solid axle in 24tpi.

Cheers Jon ... I'm seriously stoked on it ... it just wasn't happening for while ... then I had a result in finding the decal set that I wanted that had a more 90s look AND scored a TNT wheelset ( Derringer hubs on chrome Ukai rims )

I'm just after a set of pedals and a micro adjust post to get it finished ... think I'll need to get the cranks powdered white as they are in a bad way even for survivors  :angel:

Do what works for you Ed.  :daumenhoch:

I know what its like to have a build that is so close to being done, and how a little thing like that can make or break it. At the same time I only refinish things if they have already been refinished by a previous owner, as I know how hard it is to find original stuff these days. Its a tough call that we all have to choose between so just go for what you feel is best for the bike.
