There was some for sale here last week I think for over a grand. Can't see the listing now but might be the same seller.
There was a question someone raised over why they were so expensive, rarity, desirability, quality or all three. It was never answered but I'd be interested to know too as, along with the Sheriff Stars, they weren't on my radar as a kid. Way over the maximum price I'd ever pay for hubs (in fact more than I'd pay for a whole bike), but interesting nonetheless.

The ones on here were 2k

In response to some of the questions:
Yes these hubs are extremely hard to come by, on average about one or maybe two sets a year come up for sale worldwide (some years none). So if your looking for a set you might have to sit patiently for 2 to 3 years just to bid on a set.
They date from somewhere around 1982 - 1984, there are probably 100 sets in the world (there may be more, there may be less, most will be in private collections now under lock and key). They were at the high end of engineering back in the 80s, much like a set of McLaren speakers or a bang and olufsen music centre is these days.
I advertised them here first to give people here a chance (Not a bargain, a chance to purchase them before eBay) I removed them because they didn't seem to be going down well with the general karma, my price tag here was set at a peak price, those that know me well would understand that I am usually happy to work out a deal that suits both parties.
I hear you when you say that these cost as much as you might spend on a whole bike. I came here when the site started some ten or more years ago and built some simply inexpensive bikes and I gained a huge amount of fun and pleasure from that, so I'm not going to knock that at all (its all about the fun, for me part of that fun has been the search for that elusive rare part / parts).
These days I don't have much in the way of old BMX's, and I don't buy or sell very often. I do however tinker with what I have and every now and then buy the things I really really like and sell what I don't need.
For the last three years I have taken a back seat from building BMX's and I have been trying to build a custom motorbike. I'm doing ok for a first timer and at the moment I am busy raising funds to get it ceramic coated and sprayed ready to be rewired for the summer:

Hope that all helps, the hubs are what they are:
Rare = Yes
Expensive = Yes
Super Cool = Most definitely!
Cheers
Dan

Cheers for the info, and good luck with the sale, I hope you get the maximum possible for them. I only raised the question again out of genuine interest.
They are lovely to look at for sure but a completely different league for me.
Nice bike too.

this thread took a surprising turn :4_17_5:

Shame you have to justify yourself Dan.
I guess haters gonna hate.
Hope your well :daumenhoch:
-
No one was asking him to justify himself, or saying they hated them.
I was just interested as this stuff passed me by completely and it's a hub worth 2 grand.
It still does interest me even if I could never afford it, like most stuff in this hobby now tbh.
-
You seem to be justifying yourself :LolLolLolLol:
-
I'm explaining that I don't hate them or think he has to justify himself which seemed to be the conclusion you ended up at.
-
Yeah justifying yourself. Funny that.

I do like Zeronine stuff, them pads. 8)

Somewhat annoyingly (for me) the hubs sold for less than half the RAD listing price.
I can't quite grasp the rationale of offering something to the RAD community at twice the price you were prepared to accept for them...
They'll probably end up on some inappropriate FB fashion build in a desperate attempt for 'likes'

As above I offered them here first (i put a high price on them because I didn't know their true value) The rules here are that they must have a price no offers.
Unfortunately what you are saying is that the rules don't work for this type of item where the seller doesn't want to offer them a price they are not sure of.
I might have if I was allowed put them up for sale as offers invited. But as no one here came to talk to me I put them up on eBay and let them roll.
You were welcome to bid I would have had no problem with that.
Sorry if that has upset you
-
Just be careful they've not been bought by that scrote who tried to scam Terry Wildon when he was selling his posh hubs!
-
If you can remember who he was, pm me the details (much appreciated)
Jaan: have sent you a pm
Cheers
Dan

Sorry Dan - the post on FB appears to have disappeared but he was a UK buyer via the BMXMuseum site
tbh I doubt he's going to be up for another scam so soon after failing, but might be worth a PM to Wildon
(think it was Jae something)

I appreciate your predicament Dan. Unfortunately, without dialogue we're left to make assumptions. Mine was that you knew what you wanted for them and that my offer would have been perceived as low balling - ergo insulting and I didn't want to do that as I still appreciate the black Motomag (yes that was me) that i bought off you a few years back for my son's rider. That was a bargain! When I bought that, your motorbike was virtually embryonic.
Lets pick up from your PM.
