Hi all, I picked this up on ebay recently. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMX-bike-frame-chrome-/151992937993?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=YUprVJxfQxYyo68KrxgjVr6xP84%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
it has a coaster brake tab, and having looked on the Vintage Mongoose site it seems to me that it's a 79 Motomag. Has a serial number starting with 'C' on the bottom bracket shell, the gusset, dropouts, rear triangle all look right to me (although someone has drilled a hole through the chainstay box :idiot2:.
However, I posted on the Retrogoose site to ask about paint schemes from the era, and one of the mods tells me it's not a 'genuine' Mongoose frame.
Is he right? are there copies kicking about? Seems a bit unlikely to me.... the welding isn't great, but then I don't think it was on the Motomags in general was it?
cheers, Jim

Defo not a goose frame.
The welds give it away, even on the lower end Tri-moly frames the welds were lovely.

'80 Motomag welds......

oh dear! I wonder what it is...

Looks cool and old school anyway fella :daumenhoch: looks like you had it for a good price anyway get some forks and build as a goose replica/copy anyway :daumenhoch:
-
No idea what it is, there were some copies but can't remember who made them. Puch rings a bell but could be wrong there.
Like Taipan says, build it as a goose replica anyways :daumenhoch:
-
Is it an Ammaco? :-\
:daumenhoch:

Not an Ammaco either :daumenhoch:

thanks guys, yes fair point, it is oldschool, which can't be wrong can it!
Puch copied the hole in the headtube gusset, didn't they, but wasn't sure that they went the whole hog and copied the rear end? maybe they did...
Anyway, I have some shiny decals coming from BMX products and thought I might get SBD to powder it black...

There's this Takara on ebay at the moment - obviously it's got the letter 't' stamped in various places, but I'd say that whoever made this probably made the copy Motomag as well - same welding etc. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Takara-Bmx-Frame-/131752884616?hash=item1ead157988:g:irEAAOSwq7JUG5YD

That Takara is as cool as fook :daumenhoch:

yes, it's nice isn't it. I notice that it has the same hole drilled through the chainstay/seattube box area - my copy Motomag has that too, and I don't think it was done by an owner. Motomags don't have it I notice...

Some do some don't have this hole.
I think it's for a side/kick stand as some can be squashed from over tightening.
I'm sure I've heard that bitd parents would ask the bike shop to drill the hole when new so a stand could be fitted.
This hole has stopped me buying some motomag frames in the past as I don't like them

yes, the copy frame I have has clearly had an overtightened stand on it :(
