I've been out the loop for awhile but why the decision to offer 3 votes?
-
Every month people were struggling to choose just one bike, so now we get 3. Each vote has an equal weighting. The format has now been revised behind the scenes so that the mods/and or the forum technical/admin section can see who voted for who, although this isn't made public as the votes are being cast. The change has occurred following Stiddsgate
-
It's good to have you back Rich :-* :-* :-*
Taking a bit of a punt, but think this maybe your type of thing explosion

It's been 3 for ages Rich. Rationale being that it might help prevent people (esp newbies) from not entering if they see some 4 figure build dripping with exotic parts. Can be quite demoralising entering a nice bike & getting zero votes

Far too much literature.
There's always a Rad drama... is he selling up now...I could do with some wheels...

Sean's Mrs Jo and his foster kids voted for his bikes, there were loads of other members using second and third accounts as well voting for their own bikes. In my opinion Sean got hung out to dry and we've lost a great bloke from the site.
But hey its all just a bit of fun hey
-
Those with multiple accounts who used them to rig votes should be ashamed of themselves
-
I'm not keen on the three vote system and prefer the 'pick one bike and vote for it' .......
I can understand people feeling a bit 'unhappy' if they get no votes for their entry , but giving everyone three votes still doesn't mean they'll receive one unless there were only three entries.....
I can also understand that for some folk it might be 'too difficult' for them to choose just one bike ...... no I'm lying , I can't understand that at all..... get a grip and pick a bike .
-
I'd like to see the votes weighted, so your favourite (1st place) would be 3 points, your second favourite 2 points, and 3rd 1 point. Like eurovision for bikes. I really miss Terry Wogan :'(

I presumed this would have been the case anyway. To have 3 equal votes just seems against the normal flow of scoring
-
Don't think the forum software allows for weighted voting from what I know of it.

What Rob said ^
Even without weighting, the bike with the most votes wins, the one with the least comes last....

I've got to say even as someone who has always ended BOTM for fun .... I'd much rather come last with some votes than come last with none .... That would be really demoralising :-[

I think everyone has at some point had the feeling of the need for split loyalities at times in BOTM ... Their pals have entered a bike or it's a bike that they have helped build in some way and the 3 votes also allows for this to be taken into account.
I've always liked Dan's bikes ( re-pops and all) for example and now under this system I can vote for both his and the high end glamour build ( that usually ... But not always wins). :daumenhoch:

Look what you've started Rich! :tickedoff:
Great to have you back in the fold mate ;)

My opinion is it's not in the spirit of BOTM to vote for a bike just because it's your mate's.It should just be about what your fave bike is,the attention to detail or the one you'd most like to own.... or if you don't like any of them, your fave parts.
I also think it's a bit off to vote for your own bike.No offence to those that have but personally i find it un-sportsman like. I prefer the one vote system. What's the point in having 1 vote out of 3 if that build comes nowhere near winning anyway?
I really liked the openness of the posted in the thread vote so it's totally clear what people like & don't & why or how Radsters are voting. Why have something to hide? We all have our own opinions & each person builds their rides how they like them.If you can't take the criticism then don't enter.
I also think it'll stop people building for what's considered "to the gallery" & weed out those just being loyal to mates.I know it's just for fun but a lot of time, research, money & effort is put into these builds so clarity should be the most important element considering the whole "Stiddsgate" scenario.
We ride & build bmx bikes so why this need to walk on eggshells about it or try & paint a rose tinted glow over it all?
You can't please everyone so why water it down to try & make everyone feel like their bikes at least got a vote.
Prize or no prize it's a competition at the end of the day so should be treated as such... otherwise it's just a free for all & the buzz of actually winning it is diluted.Do we really need Rad or BOTM turning into a granny state? Reality.......what a concept!
-
I agree with a lot of your points mate ... The one vote system makes you choose ONE bike ... I agree with you in that I always voted in this system for the bike I actually would like to own out of those on offer.
You are not wrong when you state how much time, effort, patience, friendship and ( although not the most important ) money goes into our Rad builds. :daumenhoch: :4_17_5:

Cheers Ant,the money part wasn't put there in any sort of order but it plays a big part as parts & the availability of them become more scarce the price shoots up, let alone the disposable income to afford them. This obviously affects the outcome of how a bike is built or how long it takes to build it.Just to add this doesn't affect my vote but is part of the effort it takes to build.
The three vote system also makes it unfair as a bike could win easily by default just by being most voters 3rd choice. As there is no weighting system it sort of becomes the luck of the draw rather than the single vote system.
-
I guess whatever voting system is used it will never please everyone. From my own personal view, I have no interest on how much anyone spends on a part or a frame as it has no baring on the way I vote. a well put together original POS can be much more interesting to me than a repowdered blinged up HUTCH or JMC but unfortunately they always tend to win.
Now the time and effort put in? that's another matter alltogether, which is often why I've voted for friends bikes in the past as I know exactly what has gone into building it.....nothing to do with him being a mate but just the dedication and effort involved in bringing the bike together :daumenhoch:
-
My take on public vs anonymous voting..
I think that some people might feel a degree of pressure to vote for mates, when really they may prefer a bike built by someone else. Public voting may also cause people to be swayed to try and alter the course of voting.
The 3 vote thing..
Although it wouldn't put me off entering, there are people who pour their hearts (& money) into building a bike but are still reluctant to enter BOTM if they see someone has already entered something truly exotic/rare/expensive/whatever and they think they'll have no chance of even getting a vote. Having 3 votes available means that the bike with the most votes still wins, but also allows other builds to at least get some recognition for the effort that's gone into them. In any case, if people prefer the one vote system they can simply use one vote.
-
The money part doesn't enter into it w/me either. It was just taken out of context. With money considered only as part of the effort & dedication that gets put into it.
I've waited for parts for years & i'm still waiting to finish builds as i'm sure many others are.I haven't even put a build up yet but that doesn't mean i don't appreciate others efforts.Last month i voted for Steve's MRD though there were some wicked top end expensive & mint builds to vote for so i just go by what catches me at the time. :daumenhoch:
Just to add that i'd prefer a real nice OG survivor over a mint factory spec build any day but still go w/how the builds grab me.

This pefectly sums up the reasoning behind 3 votes. the extra two votes are a highly commended award
-
Never voted for a mates bike unless i liked it the best and never voted for my own bike (what's that all about). 1 vote or 3 votes... not arsed either way it's just a bit of fun at the end of the day.
And all this bollox about getting upset if you didn't get a single vote is a bit poor.... we're not in the fookin infants. No votes means you must try harder imo. ???
-
Never voted for a mates bike
Because you have no mates.

Absofookinglutely!!

Mike - I wasn't in any way aiming my comment at you, was a general comment about how some people that put a bike together can have a complete strop if they don't get the adulation they think they deserve. This has happened on many occasions over the last few years.
I'm only offering my own opinion on things as well, not trying to trash anyone else's :daumenhoch:
-
No worries Griff, I took it the wrong way......my mistake! ;D
-
Just enter your bike !! ...... if it wins great , if it doesn't you still have the bike your proud of :daumenhoch:
Im not too fussed if it's 3 votes or a single vote , hidden or on show ....... having said that the 3 votes have made it a bit easier to pick as the standard has been so high the past 6 months .

:daumenhoch: what Joff says

- 1 vote per person (just like in the real world).
- Make the ballot private (just like in the real world).
If your bike wins great. If it doesn't and you are bummed you built it for the wrong reason.
Simple. :daumenhoch:

I don't build bikes to be bummed...although I suppose it's a mark of respect.
I would accept a kiss.
