So i bought a GT frame (2001 i think) When checking over the frame i've noticed that there are no numbers on the bottom of the frame. I thought that was weird so i placed a magnet on it & it wouldn't stick so removed some of the paint & it has some car bodyfiller there. I've chipped this off & noticed that someone has used a grinder on it to remove the numbers >:(
Obviously a stolen bike at some point which i'm extremely pi**ed off about :tickedoff: because i wouldn't have bought it.
My question is can these marks be repaired easily as i planned to get the frame repainted (original paint not that great). I have a good friend who can do this really cheaply for me which is why i wanted it redone but he's no good with metal work.

just sand off the filler, it should come off easy enough....then sand out any grinder marks. Do you have any pics?

Thank you for the reply. All the filler is removed but it has some scores where the grinder has been used. These won't be able to be sanded out. Their not too bad & don't ruin the frame at all.
I didn't really want to use bodyfiller so is there another way to repair?
I can take some photos this afternoon & post :)

You could fill with solder before painting...put some pics up and lets have a look at how bad it is :daumenhoch:

Here's a photo... As it was bare metal i just put some odd silver paint i had on it to stop it going rusty. It's already started to rust a bit though in a few weeks.

Is the bit in the middle body filler still or is that the state of the bare metal? I still reckon it will sand out. It will need some elbow grease but I reckon less than an hours work. start with 80 until you have removed the deep marks and then work upwards through the grades til you reach 600...this will more than enough for priming and painting :daumenhoch:

No the middle part is the original paint (just with some silver spray on the top). The two grinder marks had filler on them but wasn't mixed very well as i was able to pick it off with a small screwdriver.

get some 80 grit and take it down to bare metal all over, I reckon those marks can be removed, or at least 90% of them :daumenhoch:

I was just annoyed that i was sold it in the first place but i guess these things happen from time to time. It might explain why it wasn't a complete bike. Maybe it was stripped & sold off in bits?

I wonder how many of us have bought bikes in the last 10 years for example (in good faith), that were stolen back in the day?
