I've been on the lookout for a GT Pro in need of some attention and have just bought this off the museum. Serial numbers been removed but seller thinks it's an 85. Is there anyway of telling the year from the dropouts, forks etc. I've been lurking around here for years and have finally took the plunge and bought this. The chrome looks too far gone but I'm going to try and revive it before I go down the road of powdering it. It will be budget build and any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at the drop outs I'd say it's an 85 too. :daumenhoch:

Is that down to the 3 holes?
-
Was the mach1 and pro series the same frame?
-
Yes mate and the cut outs in the fork drops. Pretty sure they stem from 85 but not sure when they stopped making em like that. TheSwan Guy will be along sometime to no doubt put me straight. :LolLolLolLol:

Dunno about being the same frame but pretty sure they had the same holes/cut outs. :daumenhoch:

Dunno about the year that chrome looks ok to me, if you do decide to paint it don't key the chrome, it can then be stripped back again if you change your mind!
Should build up lovely that!

Chrome's really bad around the b/b area and where the down tube meets the head tube. Seller has told me it's only surface rust so if I can clean it up and it's not too bad it will be left. I'd rather leave it if I can. Don't really want to powder unless it's totally gone.

Oxalic or citric acid bath should see off most of the rust, just done a couple of frames, worked better than expected!

It's an 85/6 Pro series/Mach One
Same frames
If you serial was on the bottom bracket it's an Asian made frame. If it was on the outside of the left rear dropout its US made.

That's the plan as I'd like to keep it original if possible but it looks pretty bad on the photos and the seller has told me it needs refinishing
