I'm just about to get a ghp frame and forks from 84 refinished.
Does anyone know what the factory red finish was? Was it a gloss or candy?
-
Would Greg himself not know? ( FB ) :daumenhoch:
-
I bet Ant (Factory Pilot) will know. I wouldn't say he's a know all, but he built a stunning GHP, and knowing Ant, it wouldn't have been without a considerable amount of homework on the brand.
-
Am almost 100% certain they were gloss and not candy. Ant may be able to confirm though. If I do another build, it's likely that it'll be a GHP. Lovely bikes :daumenhoch:

PM sent Marc ... If I'd seen this I'd have replied in here !!
I've seen a couple of NOS frames and they were definitely candy red .. 85s were gloss but 84s were candy.
Where is Jaan ( Chris ) when you need him !
I'll find some pictures Marc ....

This is a supposed NOS frame called "candy red"

But looks more gloss to me than a proper candy colour
This is not nos but looks more candy red for sure ..

Marc ... They look great in candy and those on the BMXmuseum all refer to themselves as "candy red " but I know what it's like when you want something perfect ..

Great work Ant. I was looking at 85's then. Never knew they did both
-
Thanks Andy, yeah pretty sure now early (84s) were candy .. Later ( like the trix ) gloss fistblump
-
84's were candy red, I have an original finish cruiser and a refinished long that was repainted by Subwax

Thanks all,
Really difficult - the one in this picture is a Trix and actually candy red...I've seen the build thread on the museum and its a white base coat with candy red over making it look like a mix of orange and red, which I think looks fantastic. This frame actually started as a YELLOW, factory painted, which I can only find once reference to!
The GHP's from early 84 seem to be candy red, later seem to be red gloss.
I popped into see SBD yesterday and dropped my GHP F+F off. SBD showed me a sample of a gloss red which looked really good. In the adverts I've got in magazines from BITD it doesn't say Candy Red, and if the logo is the newer logo with the red/orange/yellow background they are referred to as Red.
My gut feel is to go Gloss Red, even though the frame is stamped 0784 which I think is July 84. In America that practically an 85 as they also go one season in advance. I think the Gloss Red suits the newer decals more than the Candy Red on the early silver backed decals.
I also found this flicking through my July 85 copy of Freestylin' magazine - an advert which offers the GHP in "red, white, chrome or day glow orange" I think that must be the Candy Red over the white base.

Its so f88kin hard!!

I see what you mean. Very difficult to tell. The candy red colour looks more like a metallic shade as opposed to candy red as we know it, but that may be due to having a white base coat underneath. Superbike Dan did my Falcon Pro Beta in candy red over the raw metal, and the finish and shine is amazing. It absolutely blings in the sun, and looks like liquid. See the welds - you get an idea of the depth of the shine/colour

The original colour was more of a metallic red, as opposed to a clear/semi translucent candy
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/Falcon%20Pro%20BMX/3_zpsmnrwbfyb.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/Falcon%20Pro%20BMX/3_zpsmnrwbfyb.jpg.html)
I fear that it if you get it done in candy as we know it, it may look 'too candy', although I've never seen an original one in red. Could you ask Dan to do you a few samples on offcuts of steel - gloss red, candy over raw metal, and candy over a white base coat? Candy over a plain basecoat may dull it down a bit and dampen down some of the bling, which seems to be the correct finish. The supposed NOS frame has more of a metallic look as opposed to semi translucent candy. The GJS Prototype that Juan Mattos did was Candy red over chrome (plate or paint i'm not sure), and was really blingy - maybe too blingy for what you are looking for
(http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/juanrmattos/GJSFreestyler.jpg) (http://s294.photobucket.com/user/juanrmattos/media/GJSFreestyler.jpg.html)
I agree that the later decals on the pro 1 and Trix seem to look better on and enhance the 'gloss' red finish, whereas the earlier silver decals probably look better on a metallic/candy background. Decisions decisions...
Best of luck deciding and getting it sorted. It will look great no matter what the colour :4_17_5:

Speak to Mattdub, he had paint matched to an original frame, I think I still got the pot of paint in garage somewhere
-
found this on YouTube.
This is the build />
It's Jaun Mattos talking about his old trix - he said its red over white base, a two step process. I've seen lots of images of this one and indeed it does look gloss red with a hint of orange, so that's what I'm going for. Photos as follows. The earlier candy red's aren't doing for me. Freestyle bikes in / around 84/85 were about colour (Neon green and blue haros, the yellow green and blue GT's, the orange VDCs and streetbeats) and not really about bling.

I absolutely love this bike to ride .. So light, so fast, great to turn ... Love that Shimano DX lever ... One finger control so good for racing .. Can't wait to whizz it round the MK track!

So, SBD came through for me, finished yesterday. After I investigated quite a few shades of red, I found RAL3024 Luminous Red. Dan tracked it down through his connections in the industry and sprayed it in wet paint for me, starting with a white base coat, then the red, and then a few coats of clear. Its exactly what I wanted, a shade lighter than the standard GHP Solid Red (and much lighter than the cherry red) with a little bit of orange, that comes alive when you put light on it. 80's Freestyle to a tee!! My balls are tingling with the excitement of getting this built!!!

Looking Lush :smitten:
You're going to beat me, easy. Been back from the states 2 weeks and not had much time myself yet. Three weeks out there and my wifey had a mountain of chores lined up for me when i got back :'(.
Still, week at home next week so may get to make some progress.
Keep it coming, can't wait to see this come together.
What parts you got in mind?

Don't think I will get it finished straight away, I'm off to Italy for two weeks from Thursday this week. And I haven't got any new Speedos yet!
I was planning gold anodised throughout with red panaracer freestyle tyres and orange z rims (they have orange acs hubs and white spokes), but I'm not so sure the gold will work so might go white or silver/chrome.....seat might have to change as well, Ive got a red shotgun ii and I think it might clash.
-
That looks like a really good colour. Nice and bright - not too deep in shade, and not metallic/candy either :daumenhoch:
It can be so difficult to get the correct colour as there are so many variables, especially when trying to take references from photographs. The light, exposure, lens, type of camera all and the print settings all affect the finished/published photo. I thought the colour on my GJS was ok until I put the parts next to it, and then noticed a bad colour clash.
What about ditching the red seat and going for a black shot gun II? Classic look and colour combo. It's not like you see loads of them done like this, as they're super rare. This will be a great build :daumenhoch:
-
That is looking good, Dan is a master at paintwork that's for sure :daumenhoch:
