Title: The Apocalypse Now Build 1983 Quadangle - Hearts Of Darkness -Now in Full Technicolor
Post by: factory pilot on June 02, 2016, 08:16 PM

At 15 months and counting this build really is my journey into the Heart of Darkness....

And so we begin with a flashback to April last year when during a visit to Joffy's I saw this and fell in love with it..

This bike had been dibbed by a friend and I thought nothing of it...
A few days later I found out he had backed out of the deal .. I joked to my girlfriend Jo about the Quad and how she could buy it for me as a Christmas present and to my surprise she said I could have it if I really wanted it .. I was gobsmacked and ofcourse bit her hand off!!!

The bike wasn't original paint and had a hairline crack which I could have left but I always want my builds to be right so thanks to Andy DTTDB the frame was sent to Geoff Haslam Welding in Warrington to be repaired... He did an amazing job and he was really reasonable too...

I then started to research 83 Quads and what parts came as spec both in the U.S. an UK..

( thanks Torkerdude Tony Lee for the lend of the mag!)

It was hard deciding what to do and I didn't want to be restricted by a 100% factory spec bike as I'd done that already with my 85 Haro Master.
Quads came with a huge variety of parts and even those sold by Shiners never matched the one reviewed in the UK magazine.
I wanted the bike to be sympathetic to those SE bikes but I decided that I'd either pick parts from either of the two bikes reviewed or I'd upgrade if possible to make this a really Bitchen 83 Race bike with every part era correct. To keep this interesting on a personal level I decided to get parts I'd never bought before but the brief was it must be 83 era correct at all costs.

They first part I decided to get was Oakley .5s in black ... (Nightmare ... Why oh why ?!!)

I love my Oakleys and these came on both 83 and 84 Quads in the States so I began my search ...
Now I'm a teacher and paying £300 for a pair of grips wasn't happening so I read an old thread on rad about dying these suckas... RESULT! I thought .. How wrong could I have been!!!!
I managed to get a NOS pair in yellow at a very reasonable price from Rich Devilock and phoned up the boys for a night of BMX chat and grip dying...

To be fair we had a great night round at Joffy's but those bastard grips weren't budging and ended up ruined ...

I don't think those muffins helped the process ... Tony's idea I think ...

I don't think the Gucci perfume helped either...

We ( thanks Andy ) tried again on 3 other occasions but these suckers were ruined and not yellow or black anymore!

I can't believe I've not even got round to mentioning any parts for this build yet!

Part 2 of this insane build thread coming soon ...
Y'all come back now ye'hear !!

Evening all.......Hope all is well with everyone!

Ant, in my humble opinion, Quadangles are the epitome of OS BMX, the frame design is just crazy but works so perfectly and they glide rather than ride. I had a 79 Loopy STR-1 and an 82 4130 Quad, and by far, they were my favourites.
I'm convinced you will love this bike just as I did mine and by the looks of it, it's gonna be a corker of a build.
I'll be very much looking forward to the finished result, and no doubt with a little envy!!!

Adam

Quads are indeed stunning frames and apart from the early mild steel Loopy's they're reasonably light. Great frames to ride, should be a cracker this  :4_17_5:

Part 2

So after failing miserably to dye those piggin' Oakley grips I had to go for a plan B ...

Andy Rooski came up trumps with these bad boys ...

But I wasn't happy and as luck would have it these turned up...

I'm so glad because these are just so right for an 83 Quad. U.S. Factory spec on both 83 and 84 bikes.

After much searching I managed to get a mint OG frame pad from Sam Meticulous and then I got a NOS handlebar pad and stem pad from an old collector friend of mine to complete the set...I love having OG pads on my builds!

Now Andy and I never do the things the easy way so instead of just posting our frames to SuperBikeDan we spent the best part of a day travelling down from Wigan to London Town ...
It was well worth it ... The guy is a legend.. It was great to see where the magic happens ..

The Quad wasn't original paint and due to the repair and a really impatient spray job the previous owner had done it was a no brainer to get it re-done ..

So glad I did ... SBD found more than few imperfects which he was more than happy to rectify ... His communication and work is first rate if you've not had the pleasure of using him yet...

The final results are just stunning ..

As you can see even before this I was determined to go all out on this build.

I'm not a fan of either Troxel seats ( 84 spec anyway ) or the Elina lightening bolts ( 83 UK Spec ) plus rumours of copies and repops made me stay well clear.
The U.S. Bike had a Viscount MX on it but I wanted an upgrade and decided to go for this .. Era correct and my favourite BMX saddle...

I was lucky enough to get this minter ( OG decals ) from Terry Wildon

I've never done a bike with Gold Anno parts before and this was a steep learning curve ...
It's been crazy difficult to find minty parts in Gold ( remember non of this build was done using FB ) .. Most are scratched or chipped so I had to take the decision to go all out and try for NOS wherever I could find them ( cost dictating whether I could afford them and meaning several of these parts took me two months of saving before I could buy them ) ......

One of the first things I got was this Tuff Neck clamp from MK
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160615/1a118a8a1949c67ccf08e003c2e9eb2e.jpg)

Then I got the gold bug. The UK Quad had gold Shimano DXs on them ( another of my all time favourite parts ) so after much hunting and negotiating ( with Andy's help ) I got this 100% NOS pair from the BMX museum ..

They are perfection!!!

I hope you are enjoying the journey as much as I am... It really had been emotional searching, hunting and scrimping and saving to get this build just right in terms of era correctness and SE compatible where appropriate...

And ofcourse using parts that I got a real buzz from finding..

More updates to come very soon....

Ant

Part 3

Let's start with the steering dept. ...

I toyed with idea of a gold tuff neck or pro neck but with so many moody and fake  ones around I opted to steer of them. I got a nice gold suntour power stem but it didn't do anything for me on this build so after a long long wait I sourced this ....

NOS SR Aerox-M "The Slant Stem"

The U.S. 83 came with these as spec and described them as "Perfecto Garcia" for the steering angle of the Quad.

It also came with a Hatta Mx2 headset but I wanted to add a few era correct upgrades. The rule was it had to be SE sympathetic and era correct and original finish. Again the search was long but well worth the weight as I found this...

NOS Hatta MX100 headset

To compliment this I got these beauties ..

NOS Tange Headlock and a NOS SST Dirt Skirt

SR was a make that supplied many parts for Quads and SE in general so I plumped for one for seatpost. I thought about a Shimano DX post but this fluted piece of kit was more era correct and was just a bit different ...

NOS SR Laprade fluted seatpost with integrated seat clamp. Many thanks to Paul Monkian for this beauty...

On the UK spec Quad it came with a OPC Sugino crank. I wanted an era correct upgrade. My holy grail was the Maxy Cross. I've always loved these and wanted one. Many riders used them in 83 so it was perfect. It also fitted in with my black, gold, chrome 3 build colours to balance the look of the bike. Most Anno cranks I found were badly scratched, dented or missing rank arms. I had no choice.. I had to find one in a box or it would seriously reduce the quality of this build which at this point had to be perfect ... There was no half measures now ..
People say there are no NOS parts around but if you look long and hard enough sometimes your dreams come true ..

NOS Sugino Maxy Cross complete crankset in box
( including 44t chain wheel and sugino bolts  as used on the UK spec bike and NOS BB and crank end caps ) ...it's the most amazing thing I've ever found in all the time I've been in this hobby and got a such a buzz from getting it ..

Finally in these part I'll do the brake set up ...

Although I wanted this bike to be a thorough bred race machine the spec bikes had 2 brakes and 2 of my favourite racers ( Harry Leary and Andy Ruffell ) always ran front and rear brakes in 83 so it was good enough for me ..

83 Dated Dia Compe cables
83 Dated mx1000s ( front and rear )

Wanting to push myself at every turn on this build right to the limit I researched that in 83 the pro riders such as Stu Thompson and Eric Rupe were running these on their brake set ups so I just had to find them and put them on the Quad...

Mathauser Finned Pro Brake Blocks

These were era correct for 83 as different designed Mathausers were used in 84 by the pros.

Levers were a difficult one .. I sourced several NOS gold DC Bronco levers but even the Action Bike review said to ditch them straight away and I had to agree they just looked and felt terrible for this build so I upgraded once more ...

Believe it or not I didn't own any original Tech 3s in my collection so the hunt began long before MK last year and ended with those beauties.
Trying to find descent condition gold levers was near impossible ( anyone else looking will tell you the ball ache ) so again NOS was really my only option... I think I'm going to cry when I have to finally open this packet !

This build has been all consuming encompassing amazing highs and lows along the way ....

The end is in sight now .....

I'm saving some very special bits right until the end for you all..,
I hope you're still with me lads on this one!

Part four coming very soon..

Ant

The Horror! The Horror!

... 16 months and counting .....

Sorry for the delay chaps but as Stephen Patrick Morrissey once said 'These things take time'!

First up as a race bike I wanted a plate on it and the UK Review had a Haro Flo-Panel on it. As a kid I had one on my GS Burner so I had to get one for this build....

NOS in Sealed Bag

For bars both specs and the 84s as well all came with unknurled SE Racing Powerings.

I managed to find these quite early in the build...

..but they'd been re-chromed and had a repop decal on them .. It didn't sit well with me for this build as I wanted everything to be as original and authentic as possible on this build.
Through a collector friend of mine I sourced these which are 100% original and have their original decal still on them. Although definitely NOT NOS they were 8 or 9 out of 10 bars so I'm really pleased with them.

Lower bars are original chrome ones

I wanted this to be as correct as possible so when it came to Decals I asked Ash( Kungfunky ) to send me some pictures of an original 83 Bitchen Black Quad.
I never knew but 83s came with this specific Scot Enterprises decal ( although not shown in either bike reviews I did see one on a bike in a Shiners Advert )

So here is my F and F finally all ready at last ..

For tyres I wanted era correct and NOS ( I don't make it easy do I ! ) I also wanted 2x 1.75s because aesthetically that's what I like and what I rode bitd ...

These tyres came on Redlines and were actually date stamped to make them era correct. I remember them from the Shiners adverts bitd too.
When I found these the guy actually had a fatty as well but I chose these..

NOS ( never fitted with release powder) Panaracer Knarler Knobby Tyres dated 1983

To match I got these NOS Panaracer inner tubes..

And to make sure every part was era correct I got these OG 80s valve caps.

I also found this NOS Shimano 333 16T Freewheel which was 100% era correct and I loved the fact it was black and gold to match the colours of the build perfectly.

Arguably the most important part of a race bike build is wheels.
The UK spec bike came with Araya 7Xs and large flange Suntour Hubs.

I originally got these..

The U.S. bike spec had shiny sided Ukais and to be honest I liked the look ( that trio of metal, black and gold is needed on this build to balance it out in terms of colour ) so I found some 7Xs.

After hours of research and questioning on forums I came to the conclusion that 7xs never were or came as  "shiny"  sides.

In fact they were called 7x Two Tone..

These had a smooth brushed finish not a polished bling side. Surely this was better anyway in terms of braking ( friction and all that ? )
So that's what I needed not some over polished unoriginal rims.

I wanted this bike to stand out and really push my building skills to the limit. Although I really liked the Suntours I wanted to upgrade them to make this a proper 83 race bike.

I researched what would have been cutting edge on a race bike and discovered something very special about 1983 and hubs ....

In 1983 and for a very short period Campagnolo released two hubs as actual BMX hubs ( those small flange Mozzi Record Pista shown above ) and Nuovo Tipo large flange hubs.

They were the same as there road bike hubs in every-way but the only differences were that they had BMX compatible axles and that they came in three anodised colours ( Silver, Blue and ....GOLD!)

You know what's coming .... I saw these and fell in love and the rest is history ...

These are the final piece of the jigsaw and were the Holy Grail to complete this build for me.., I just love them ...,

Combined with the Araya 7X Two Tone Rims ...
( thank you so so much to Joffy for building these pieces of Art )

...and the delay has been all about getting these wheels built perfectly.
The shape of these hubs can often mean squeaky bum time when it comes to fitting and I really feared for the worse.
However I'll never forget that feeling when I returned for Joff's overjoyed when they both ( front and rear ) fitted the Quad perfectly!

So I'm at that point where I'm sure many of you fellow Radsters are right now .. Hoping to get this baby built in time for MK ..

I'm off to the USA in a few days for some well earned R an R ...

When I return it's literally days before MK..
Wish me luck brothers and I hope to see you all on the other side ..

Until MK16 this really is the Last Post!

Thank you all for taking the time to look at this thread... I hope you've enjoyed the ride as much as I have...

Ant

So after some brilliant R and R in the U.S. Of A ....

Hooters Memphis

Hooters Knoxville

The mission continued....

I love the smell of NOS Parts in the morning..

"Soldier,  I want you to take out those JMCs to the left and those National Pros to the right !!"

With the build complete I wasn't happy with loose cables at the front and back. In both the U.S. And UK bike reviews they only used the pads to secure the cables not DC or plastic cable ties...
I had to make this as authentic and era correct as possible so I did some research...

I found this advert from late 83 which cleared showed Velcro fastenings being used on their SE Quad
(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160816/2fa59c2501ac1c458e9291fdddd24b98.jpg)

I couldn't find any that were the correct width so I had these made up especially for the build...

And so my brothers I  was finally ready to complete the build just in time for MK.

It was time to get on with what Elvis called 'TCB'
Taking Care of Business
