Title: 1985 GJS Freestyler
Post by: dancetothedrummersbeat on July 15, 2016, 12:34 AM
I'd never heard of GJS until I saw Kappy's '85 Freestyler at MK a few years ago. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to find one, although I didn't start looking seriously until last year as I had other builds on the go.

Although there were an estimated 12 prototypes made, the general production framesets were only made for 2 years, 1984 and 85. The 1984 model has round chainstay tubing, but I was drawn to the 1985 model as the chainstays are square. '84's are more common than '85's, although both are very rare. Exact production numbers are unknown, but it's generally accepted/estimated that only about 200-300 freestylers were made over the two years before GJS went out of business sometime in 1985. There are only 2 other square chainstay freestylers (apart from mine) on bmxmuseum.com, and a few others on the GJS facebook owners group. I think there are about 6-7 documented worldwide. After putting wanted ads up on here and bmx museum with no luck, and missing out on one on ebay over a year ago, I put a wanted ad up on the facebook GJS owners group. Unbelievably within an hour, someone in Philadelphia contacted me and said he had an '85 frame & fork that he would consider selling. The deal was done, and here's how the frame & forks arrived.
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/1_zpsgn8ceuzj.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/1_zpsgn8ceuzj.jpg.html)

I was pretty sure the paint/powder job wasn't the original finish, plus it had a few chips and the frame had a few dings and wear to the dropouts that needed sorting out. I therefore cracked open the hard stuff and got to work stripping the frameset
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/3_zpsvkbsga7m.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/3_zpsvkbsga7m.jpg.html)

I then took the frameset to Geoff Haslam in Warrington who did a superb job of sorting out the dings in the frame and building up the chewed dropouts. I then gave the whole thing a good sanding down, ready to go to Superbike Dan for paint

F = Freestyle
I believe the serial numbers started at 100, so in reality would be frame number 221. Numbers were sequential with no date code.

Details on what colour options were available for these framesets is lacking, but there is a pink one (an '84) on bmx museum. 1984/1985 was the start of pinks/oranges/greens and lavender being used, especially with the explosion in freestyle. I happened to see a can of pink spray in Wilkinsons, and thought the colour looked pretty good.
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/9_zpssu2suwco.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/9_zpssu2suwco.jpg.html)
I wanted the colour to be darker than Hutch pink, as I felt like doing this build in the same colour would make it too similar to a Hutch Trickstar, of which there are already a few amazing examples in pink (Benno and Adam) to name but two  :4_17_5:
Although Joff and myself talked about spraying the frame ourselves, I had the prize of a free paint/powder job from Superbike Dan following my VDC Changa winning a prize sponsored by SBD at MK last year. I've used Dan before, knew his work was second to none, and was interested to meet the man himself and see where the magic happens. Myself and Ant factory pilot therefore decided to do a crazy 512 mile round trip to drop the frames off. Me with the GJS and Ant with his SE Quad...
Here's the thread for those who haven't seen it http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,186809.msg1876219.html#msg1876219

By this time, i'd collected a few parts for the build including a NOS pink shot gun II seat
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/11_zpsvtiifrgx.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/11_zpsvtiifrgx.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/12_zpsbaig9jtm.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/12_zpsbaig9jtm.jpg.html)

other parts included pink dia compe brake cables and some NOS pink ODI Mushroom grips. The cables looked fine, but the grips were far too 'day glo' and were an obvious colour clash, so they had to go  :'(
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/13_zps0dp2mwor.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/13_zps0dp2mwor.jpg.html)

I thought that matching pink would be fairly easy, but I quickly realised that this wasn't the case. I managed to get some bubble font A'Me tri and round grips, but both of these were different shades, and weren't a perfect match for the other components. This photo is a bit misleading - the colours are very different in the flesh
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/15_zpsyevdircj.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/15_zpsyevdircj.jpg.html)

We took the seat, cables, grips and spray can to SBD's to decide on the colour. I thought that matching the colour to the spray can would give a tone somewhere between the seat and cables, to balance out the overall colour. There wasn't an off the shelf powder colour that was suitable, so Dan said he'd have to get the colour matched to the spray paint, and do it in 2k wet spray. Dan sent me some photos of the frameset and I was really pleased with his work. I couldn't wait to get the frame back

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/16_zpsojxx2sxd.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/16_zpsojxx2sxd.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/17_zps7tqg048l.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/17_zps7tqg048l.jpg.html)

Dan's work is amazing, and although I was pleased with the colour, I was a little underwhelmed. It looked good, but didn't blow me away.
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/18_zpsbgoiiq7u.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/18_zpsbgoiiq7u.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/20_zpsp8mhzni9.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/20_zpsp8mhzni9.jpg.html)

The colour seemed 'cold', and was edging towards the lavender/violet scale instead of a warm pink. My suspicions were confirmed when I put the frame next to the parts, and there was a bad clash  :'(
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/21_zps22ggnlxc.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/21_zps22ggnlxc.jpg.html)

I took at over to Joff's to ask his honest opinion - He said it looked good...
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/22_zps2qmpcdzp.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/22_zps2qmpcdzp.jpg.html)

..but good wasn't good enough. It had to be perfect.
So I got on the phone to SBD and explained the colour clash. He said that trying to get exact colour matches can be difficult, and is very subjective. I'd now realised that the colour I wanted was the colour of the seat. This was confirmed randomly when I was doing the washing up and saw the colour of my gloves - a lovely shade of pink. SBD therefore told me to go to a local car paints store and get the colour matched to the seat, and to double check it before approving it
 (http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/23_zpssrf0vnbg.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/23_zpssrf0vnbg.jpg.html)

The frame, forks, pedals and stand were all sent back to SBD for a re-spray. I sent the seat too, just so he could check the colour as it was going on. As soon as he sent me some photos, I knew we'd cracked it. The colour was exactly what i'd imagined  :D
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/24_zpsaaemgx8i.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/24_zpsaaemgx8i.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/26_zps0hi6mm7w.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/26_zps0hi6mm7w.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/25_zpsmwkgag3d.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/25_zpsmwkgag3d.jpg.html)

Dan's communication and service was amazing. He is really passionate about what he does, and is determined to leave his customers happy. He certainly did that. The colour and finish are amazing.
**I must point out that in no way was the original colour a fault of Dan's. It was just one of those things that can happen if you've ever tried to match colours. It's a nightmare!

I wanted to go with a colour scheme of pink, chrome and hint of black, so I asked Del to do me some chrome on clear decals
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/30_zps9yxgq6xf.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/30_zps9yxgq6xf.jpg.html)

Decals on. The photos really don't do the colour justice, and it looks different depending on the light. I love it.

Wow, what a thread, loving this so far.

Are you sure Dan just didn't paint the seat with the original paint he had left over, add new decals and throw it back in the box and send it straight back to you.  :LolLolLolLol:

;D  I can vouch for it being a totally different shade now Dan , the first shade was a nice colour but it wasn't right in both Andy's and my opinions .  I don't think how different the shades were comes across in the pics tbh .

Im glad you got there in the end Andy and admire your commitment and dedication to this  8)

It's going to be a stunner and im not really a freestyle fan  :4_17_5:

Part 2.
Now for some of the other parts...

I already have a few sets of Hutch beartraps on my VDC and my Skyway, so I wanted something different. I didn't actually own a set of Shimano DX's, and thought they would be spot on era and looking wise. I put a wanted ad up, and Steve69 kindly sold me a set for a good price - end caps included  :D Thanks Steve  :daumenhoch:
The only slight problem was that they were 1/2 inch spindles and I needed 9/16th's  :( I know that many pedals use DX style spindles and are technically a direct replacement, but the genuine spindles have a collar at one end, whereas the copies generally don't. Finding a set of good condition spindles wasn't easy, and in the end I had to get some NOS ones off bmx museum. I paid almost as much for the spindles as I did the pedals. Madness.
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/40_zpsdepnv0mw.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/40_zpsdepnv0mw.jpg.html)

Again, I wanted the pedals to be a bit different, so SBD painted them the same colour as the frameset. I followed Terry's guide in the tech section to fit the new spindles. All in and ready to go
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/27_zpspuquyfnc.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/27_zpspuquyfnc.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/28_zpsx2ugyehd.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/28_zpsx2ugyehd.jpg.html)

SBD also painted the stand in the same colour. This had previously been done by Joff using one of the cans of the original colour. Sorry to waste your time Joff!  :-[
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/29_zpsl0eao15t.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/29_zpsl0eao15t.jpg.html)

Joff had given me a pair of Araya 1.75 rims as part payment for some Hutch parts I sold to him when I split and sold my Hutch Pro Racer 2 years ago. The original plan was to get them chromed and put them on my VDC Changa build last year, but they didn't make it back from the chromers in time. I therefore took the black tuffs off my Skyway T/A, put them on the VDC and instantly loved the look of it. I was therefore left with a lovely set of chrome Arayas that I knew would be perfect for this bike (if I ever found one!).

I wanted to keep it simple, so hubs are NOS Suzue polished/chrome

Tyres - we all have certain parts that we obsess a bit over, and tyres are one of mine. I knew I wanted Mitsuboshi comp ST's, and they had to be the correct labels for era correctness. I paid silly money for the set that are on my VDC, but another set came up for sale on bmx museum about a year ago. They were a bargain (relatively speaking). These tyres are era correct for an '84-86 build.  Here's Terry's excellent guide and timeline to Mitsuboshi/Tioga tyres. Top work Terry  :daumenhoch:

For bars, I was torn between VDC Monkey Bars (I've never liked VDC freestyle bars), and Hutch Mike Buff bars. I decided on Mike Buffs to mix it up a bit, as I have Monkeys on my VDC. Someone kindly made me aware of a set that were for sale on facebook - i'm sorry I can't remember who you were, but thanks  :daumenhoch:
They were in good condition but not mint, so I got them re-chromed at my usual place Leigh Metal Polishers. As usual, the quality of the finish is excellent. I also got an original? Hutch Buff decal from Ian MacArthur

Their work is absolutely spot on Clint. My old Hutch pro racer (now Dan's) was done by them, and is probably the best chrome job I've ever seen.

Part 3

I did briefly think about fitting Redline 400 or 401 cranks, but decided on a set of Bullseye gen 2's as they are my favourite cranks. I picked these up on ebay, and they were in a terrible state. Original paint almost completely peeled off with pretty bad surface rust (no photos unfortunately). After a lot of sanding and polishing to get them prepped, Leigh metal polishers did an excellent job of re-chroming them. The decals were NOS from bmx museum

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/57_zpsfmhjrzfu.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/57_zpsfmhjrzfu.jpg.html)

I got the powerdisc from Lee nitrohopper. It had been anodised? in matt black. I tried to strip it using oven pride and then caustic soda, but with no luck. I sent it down to Hockley chrome in Southend, and they managed to strip it with some difficulty and then re-chrome it. It's turned out great - Thanks Lee & the team at Hockley.

I wanted to keep to my favourite crank & chain ring combination, so bought this NOS Pro Neck chain ring
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/66_zpsm0amzuum.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/66_zpsm0amzuum.jpg.html)

and I had these Elina PDNP seat guts on another shot gun seat i'd bought a while back. A quick polish and they've come up a treat
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/54_zps8wgan0pr.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/54_zps8wgan0pr.jpg.html)

Seat post is Hutch and was bought as NOS, although I think it's been re-chromed at some point. Lovely finish to it though

I was given a white Hutch seat clamp as part of the deal on the frame & forks. I stripped it and had it re-chromed at Hockley
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/61_zpsaqqfjhsf.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/61_zpsaqqfjhsf.jpg.html)

Ant factory pilot suggested that for brakes I should use something else instead of MX 900/1000's, and he suggested 880's as they would be bang on era correct for a 1985 build. The word must have got round that I was looking for some, and I got an email from Del offering me a set. They were in great condition but white, so I got the oven pride out, stripped them and gave them a polish. They came out looking great in no time

For levers I was going to stick with trusty tech 3's, but again ant said that tech 4's were the lever to have in '85. He was right of course. He kindly gave me a set of mint '85 levers that had been fitted to his Aero Reflex. The levers had been NOS prior to them being fitted. The only issue was that they were white, so it was out with the oven pride and polishing mop again
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/47_zpsffls2g91.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/47_zpsffls2g91.jpg.html)

For brake pads, I wanted something a bit different to the standard dia compe/tuff pad option. I put up a wanted ad for some Mathauser finned pads, and one kind chap said he had a scabby pair that I could have for free. I thought he was being far too generous, so I sent him $50 to cover shipping from the US and to say thanks. They were structurally sound but absolutely filthy

The original plan was to use pink dia compe cables. Trying to find any dated 1985 was a big challenge. I had a few NOS '86 ones, and everyone else only seemed to have '86's and later. There was some doubt that they were even available in pink in '85....   I was beginning to despair, but then WINI came up trumps. Thanks Mark!
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/10_zpsgnngaa7s.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/10_zpsgnngaa7s.jpg.html)

Unfortunately, the issues with the frame colour and trying to get things to match meant that the frame ended up being a few shades darker than dia compe pink. The colours did actually go pretty well together, but I wanted to keep this build as clean as possible so I had a change of mind and decided on silver cables instead. I found these beauties dated 1985 on US ebay

I still have a few parts to sort out. Am waiting on a bolt for the stem, and the grips to arrive from the US. Part 4 to follow, plus the completed build with parts list....

Post by: dancetothedrummersbeat on August 15, 2016, 11:18 PM
Sorry for the delay in updating the thread, but here it is. The build had stalled for a few reasons: I was originally set on fitting pink grips. I managed to get hold of some A'ME Tri's, but when I fitted them they just didn't look right. I had black Tri's, but the condition of them just wasn't good enough. I really wanted to fit something a bit more special. There was only one other option - Oakley B-2's. I had already pair on my VDC, but was determined not to take parts from it to benefit this build. I managed to get this NOS pair on Australian ebay.

 (http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/C27FFACE-78EE-4804-A3A0-182B8A645BE9_zpslecoqehj.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/C27FFACE-78EE-4804-A3A0-182B8A645BE9_zpslecoqehj.jpg.html)

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/99D9E0D0-BAB1-400F-A976-4733C1C91A38_zpsrvmfcffb.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/99D9E0D0-BAB1-400F-A976-4733C1C91A38_zpsrvmfcffb.jpg.html)

Luckily the seller shipped them super quick, and fortunately they were only held up due to customs/VAT for a few days. Although NOS, the donuts were missing  :'( but luckily I knew someone who had a spare set. Thanks Rick1970  :daumenhoch:

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/4450935F-E214-41AA-B284-F91CF4AA3D22_zps86nkbdsl.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/4450935F-E214-41AA-B284-F91CF4AA3D22_zps86nkbdsl.jpg.html)

I'd had the stem for a while. It was structurally good, but had been painted green, and needed replacement bolts
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/pro20neck20stem_zpsyhe8ofgb.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/pro20neck20stem_zpsyhe8ofgb.jpg.html)

I stripped it, and Joff did a supurb bit of light resto to bring it back to it's original state
(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/14_zpsp3xm1ycz.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/14_zpsp3xm1ycz.jpg.html)

Another reason for the delay in getting this build finished was having a re-think on the pedals. After speaking to and taking advice from a few rad members, I decided to ditch the pink DX's as they weren't an original colour. I still liked the pink ones and didn't want to strip them, so I went on the search for another pair. In the end I bought 2 pairs. The first ones had been restored (badly), and the pins had worn down slightly on the outer edge. The 2nd pair I bought had been rattle canned in a radberry colour, but apart from that were structurally solid and were in very good condition. I stripped the paint and Mike (Banachek) and myself gave them some very light restoration.

(http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/17_zpsocf3s1ry.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/17_zpsocf3s1ry.jpg.html)

I had a choice of both silver or pink brake cables on this build. My original choice was pink, but then thought silver would be better to avoid any clash with the frame. I built up the bike using the silver cables, but just didn't look right. The front end by the bars was too silver with not enough colour going on. I decided to go back to pink, and it was the right thing to do  :)

So after being semi built up for a few weeks, it was touch and go whether i'd get this finished in time for MK, but i'm delighted and relieved that it's done. It's been a real labour of love, and I dread to think how many hours I've agonised over trying to get the colour balance right, despite there only being 3 colours.

Nice job Andy.   :daumenhoch:

Good decisions on the pedals and grips. Personally, I think the hubs should be swapped out for something a little more befitting - although aesthetically they're spot on.

That Bullseye power disc was sold by Lee on my behalf, its nice to have something that was once mine on your builds  :)

FYI, the hard anodising was OG and as you found out, notoriously difficult to remove!

Man, that is a nice one. I think pink doesn't really go with any other colour than white on build, so the polished works well. Agree with the main, the silver pedals (also go manufacturer correct) are a better call than the pink and the colour looks great. The bike almost 'stands' / has a lightness like a race bike. I'd be tempted to just pull the front brake cable through the potts a little more so that there's more bending radius at the bottom, makes the braking smoother. Did you pass on the recessed front brake bolt? Defo one of my favourite builds recently. And love the st's - Ive got sets of later pairs, can't get these green/blue ones!  fistblump

Post by: dancetothedrummersbeat on August 16, 2016, 09:15 AM
Sadly the recessed bolt wouldn't fit as the brake hole in the forks was too narrow. I didn't fancy drilling it to make it wider

A few additions that I forgot to add to my final update..
Here's an ad from May 1985

and here's a close up..
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/af3/dancetothedrummersbeat/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/gjs_may85%202_zps1tb00zir.jpg) (http://s988.photobucket.com/user/dancetothedrummersbeat/media/GJS%20BMX/GJS%20Freestyler%20build/gjs_may85%202_zps1tb00zir.jpg.html)

As far as I know, the standard colour options for the freestyler were chrome or white, but other colours were available on request. I've seen one other pink freestyler, and also a purple one (although these were both the 1984 model, not the '85)

I see you used ovenpride to strip the levers, I thought they were painted not anodised so you would use synstrip on them? I only ask as I've got some Tech 4 levers I want to do the same to.
They've come up brilliantly, were they hard to polish?
Love this bike as it shouts mid eighties freestyle to me  fistblump

Post by: dancetothedrummersbeat on January 06, 2017, 09:54 PM
Thanks. Now you've got me thinking! I honestly can't remember now! It probably was synstrip. They stripped very easily. Dia compe levers and calipers polish up really well, with a deep shine and uniform finish. Other cheaper brakes don't come out as good, probably due to the quality of the alloy. I used a polishing cylinder with a drill bit fitting. I secured wrapped a cloth around the bottom of the lever/caliper, and secured it in a vice. I used peek polish - only a small amount. The brakes polish up within a few seconds, but it takes time because of all the curves and angles. I do the hard to get at areas by hand.  A pair of calipers and levers takes about an hour to polish  :)

Send them to me if you're struggling, and i'll do them for you  :daumenhoch:

I always fancied a set of pannys back in the 90s. However, I worked at a BMX shop who dealt with Primo, so I always used Primos during the 90s as I got them at trade price.

I did however just buy a set of Panny Mach for my new build. They weigh nearly a third of the cheap tyres I had before.
