Title: What bike
Post by: darrena on October 03, 2016, 12:54 PM
Hi,
My son is 8, nearly 9 and we are looking to get him a second hand BMW for Christmas.
My question relates to the type of bike required. He wants a bike that he can us at the local BMX track (we live in Andover, Hants). I noticed that most cheap BMX bikes are rather heavy and most the folks riding at the track have what look like very simple lightweight bikes. Not looking to spend a lot ideally but figured its not worth getting something that's like a lump of lead!

Many thanks
Darren

Welcome on this ship .... We call it rääd :welcome

Think you'd Need an junior or maybe expert size frame, lest listen in to what Nick (That Swan Guy) wrote to someone with a 8 Year Old:

Expert is the frame size, micro - mini - junior - expert - pro - elite is how it goes. It's the biggest frame size that takes 1 1/8th or 1 3/8th size wheels. these wheels are a slightly taller than 1.75 wheels and hence the brake mounts are placed accordingly. I've been through 2 growing racers and the easiest option is to buy a complete from one of the one line stores. If he's only just got into racing and you have a small budget look at the Cuda range of race bikes. Alan's BMX stock them. A good start point. You can jump in big time and waste lots of cash on a bike they might use twice.

Hope this helps and is legible, if not blame Carlos!

Just my two pence, over and out ;)

Hi both, thanks for your responses

My budget is under £100 for a second hand bike which I appreciate won't get me much!
Should I be looking for 20" wheels?

Currently looking on ebay and gumtree

what about something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cuda-Shredder-Boys-Junior-18-Wheel-25-9T-Gearing-BMX-Bike-Bicycle-Blue-BAR1731-/311601014867?hash=item488cde2853:g:GC8AAOSw2GlXINSV

It's an 18" BMX, probably not very light but it's new and looks okay  :daumenhoch:
