Title: Raleigh Raider - worth restoring?
Post by: farcanal on May 25, 2018, 12:37 PM
Hey guys - new to this site - very cool!

I've got an 80's Raleigh Raider (pic in the my bikes section) - just wondering if its worth restoration - I got it from the tip a few years back and not done anything with it yet?

Hi mate, it’s difficult to define the term ‘worth’. If WANT to do it/have the time/passion/cash, then it’s worth it to you. If you mean, can you make any money on it, then the answer is no.
I bought this for just over £100, spent approx £500 or more restoring it, but then couldn’t sell it for £350.
Was it ‘worth’ it (in monetary terms), no. Did i love restoring/building it? Yes, so was it worth it to me, absolutely!
It’s upto you!

Well nice resto!

I'm not really interested in making money - more of a 'were they any good when new and worth restoring or should I pass on to someone who'll enjoy doing it more'? I've got my Boxer for my lad when he's old enough so this is surplus

I’m not an expert on these, but i can be pretty confident in saying no- they weren’t good back in the day in terms of quality/weight of frame or quality of components, but for the money, they did the job, and hundreds or thousands of kids had them and loved them. Much the same as my Falcon Pro - was it a good bike, no. Did i love mine and did i think i was Andy Ruffell when i rode it round my local track in the woods, yes!

I'd say it's only worth restoring if you're intending to do it for a small child. It's got 16" wheels and a little frame, classed as a mini, no good to an adult as such....

...it's still too big for a couple of RADsters though, mentioning no nanes.  :D

Welcome! I would pass it on to someone who will do it up and maybe use the time to start a new (bigger) bmx project ready for when he grows out the boxer?

As others have said not worth it in monetary terms. I’ve just been given a MK 1 Burner f&f which I’m going to build for my 10yr old daughter who’s took an interest in my hobby. I can’t wait to start it and will no doubt spend far more than what it’s worth but I’ll probably enjoy doing it more than any other build for obvious reasons.
