Title: PRO CLASS - Smoke/Black Chrome
Post by: Steve P on October 31, 2006, 11:42 PM
I'm having major problems trying to find someone willing to take on my Pro Class F+F and refinish it in black/smoke chrome. I am now thinking about getting it powdered coated black instead, just because it's easier to get done and probably cheaper too. I've also thought about standard chrome but I prefer the original smoke finish

Help me decide . . . will I blitz a nice frameset if I get it powder coated in black  :-\

Cheers

Steve

I've heard that some powder coaters can achieve similar finishes but my local one frowned when I mentioned it. I've also spoken to several car wheel refurbishers to see if they can get a finish like these wheels on my car . . . they're not interested either >:(

I think Stidds done his himself, he just used some smoked lacquer (sp) and spayed it over the chrome, and it looks the bollocks  :daumenhoch:

Cheers Billy.

When I restored the smoked chrome finish on my Pro Class I used tinted lacquer, this is how the original Pro Classes were finished, they were not a chemical smoked chrome.

I went to a local car paint manufacturer and told them what I wanted and they made it for me.  I asked for a light tint with a hint of brown (Mongoose used a hint of brown, Diamond Back used a hint of blue for the HL Turbo).  I applied about 6 light coats until I had the shade I required.

What you need depends on the use, obviously powder coating is tougher, but as my bike is a show bike I wasn't so worried about the toughness of the finish.

This is the result.

Stidds I love that bike, and the finish as Billy said is awsome.

I guess what might help others would be if your guy still knows the mix he brewed for you!

Steve, don't take the easy route. Wait and get the correct finish bud. I've got one I need doing as well, and I've been waiting months for my painter to get some 'black chrome' paint, which he says will do the job. I'll chase him up again.  ;)

what about this
Title: Re: PRO CLASS - Smoke/Black Chrome
Post by: dj_benice on November 01, 2006, 06:57 PM
What about the GT process of running an electric current through the chrome effectively "burning" it black, was a much sturdier finish than the DB n Goose though I'll agree not as pretty :)  BTW if anyone knows anybody willing to do this LMK tried quality chrome n they said nah don't do black :(
Title: Re: PRO CLASS - Smoke/Black Chrome
Post by: selfpreservation on November 01, 2006, 07:01 PM
the problem is that chromers do runs of chroming ie they do the brass one day, then the nickle next then the top layer  chrome next , they cant do individual finishes , if you had a run of smoked chrome on an industrial scale they might consider it
Title: Re: PRO CLASS - Smoke/Black Chrome

whats classed as industrial?  Am sure there are a fair few radsters that would be up for it ;D

steve,im going to see one of our paint suppliers within the next couple of weeks about paint for my leary, was speaking to the rep the other day and he said they have a new lacquer for alloy which he recons they can tint and would have more chance of staying on as its made for polished surfaces i will keep you posted mate :daumenhoch:

Thanks Phil  :daumenhoch:

My Pro Class is will need a rechrome before the lacquer and I reckon I'll have to get that done first. There's some minor flake on one of the rear stays

This is gonna be expensive ::)

The smoke finish does come off with Solvol. I've polished the forks and they are now minty chrome . . . shame the rear stay has flaked otherwise I'd have a minter  :'(

OK like many others I bought a DB HL Turbo & TLite with the View to doing them up but asking around no one seems to know a company that can do !! there is lots of talk about Electro plating etc.. and types of paint and smoke chrome lacour etc...

pros and cons to most of them lacour peels off quite easy, Paint never gonna get the right effect

However......

How ever I think I have found a solution

http://www.fhlambert.com/services/nickel_black.htm

the Black Nickel is an Electrolytic colouring process which gives it a BLuish Black Chrome finish I am gonna speak to this lot first thing on Monday to see how I get on this bunch do all sorts so I think they would have no probs doing a F&F

I have a meeting in Watford on Wednesday so I will take the F&F to them see what they got to say !!

I will post a review once I have spoken to them, if they are any good I will let you know

Ta for now   :LolLolLolLol:

OK Chaps the answer you have all been waiting for I went to there offices today more like a Bank Security Centre the work areas were absolutely Mint I saw them in action doing the Instruments looks metal the colour was amazing.

The MD was very nice and polite and gave me the best advise, the good news is it can be done  :daumenhoch: the bads new not by this firm the reason being is there tanks are not large enough to hold a frame of 36" +  :'(

However they have put me in touch with the UK Institute of Metal Finishers of which I have now spoken to them and advised them of our problem, he has assured me there are people who can do this work for us in the UK and is going to get me the relevant details  :4_17_5:

I explained that there are very keen enthusiasts who are after this solution for both new bikes and old bike restorations he has promised to get back to me tomorrow after lunch so watch this space !!!!

Once again the solution is out there and nearly in our grasp, I will update you all tomorrow  :LolLolLolLol:

Funny enough ,  got an email last week saying Fit have brought out a Smoke chrome frame

http://digbmx.mpora.com/news/fit-bike-co-smoke-chrome-colorway/

So Chromers can do it . and black chrome too  :smitten:

A guy on Burnerworld called FHMreader used to do a translucent black  powder coat for their Night Burner resto's and has done a number of Pro class too .

Not smoke chrome I know but it was a decent looking substitute

Spen's old rememeber , Daz  :)

But it wasn't any good to do a true replica of the Harry leary colour , because it wasn't dark enough and no tint of blue .

About 4 years ago I asked the same guy to redo my HLT colour ,,,,,he said he'd try and  do a translucent black over blue,,,,,it was an expensive mistake  :crazy2:

So I got N2cus on the job , turned out  :4_17_5:

Wow. Old thread or what!

Mark at Impresive Finishes in Darlington did both my ProClass frames and matched the laquer to a couple of patches left on the original finish. He is a member on here as FHMreader but is hardly on so call him (lost his number so Google him - might be spelt "Imprezive")

He does all the Burner World finishes so is busy but worth waiting for. If you have a look on "me and my bikes" you can see the colour finish on my ProClass's.... Oh, i'm not on about the custom job done on my MiniGoose as Neil N2Cus did that as an experiment and couldn't get the colour right.

If you search under ProClass finish yiu should find my thread from a couple of years ago.

I know this is an old thread but I use the same powder coater as lee radman. I spoke to him about doing my turbolite, apparently he used various layers of tinted laquer. As it was the ,cost involved meant that my db wasn't worth doing , however if anyone want his details I can pass them on :daumenhoch:
He's in Northampton by the way.

Great replies - thanks guys. Shows how much the finishing process' have come in the last 5/6 years. Does anyone know if the black chrome PCs were chromed inside the BB shell or tubes etc or how the process worked? I have a tatty PC frame that has no sign of black chrome anywhere so Im thinking it was originally chrome.

Also this PC/HLT smoked chrome thing has been banging on for years and yet has anyone thought to cal in some favours and ask BMX Products or Chip Hess? There seem to be a lot of people on all these OS forums dropping names but surely a quick question to Skip as to where he had the frames done BITD would have sorted this..!?!? Just a thought.

This is about as near as you can get for the Pro Class

The HLT was a much darker finish that was applied after chroming.....I think  :-\

SBD did my GT last year in powder chrome with transluscent black on top that i imported from Rosie`s in the USA.It has a brown tint (just) which is how the original was like and it is perfect.I will try and get some piccys of the finish.
