Title: Redline - Now with pics
Post by: snav69 on November 06, 2006, 11:30 PM
Just got this outside of ebay (naughty naughty) but can't make up my mind what it is.I will post my own pics tomorrow but would like an expert eye over the ebay listing for it.When i got it home i started to give it a bit of a polish and under the gusset there is remains of red paint.Would redline have painted over chrome or do you think someone decided to paint it ?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&item=200042797235&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Cheers Guys , looks like i'm on an info trip today  :LolLolLolLol:

Ref. his update on the auction .........

I told him it was'nt a PL20 , I said it was maybe 600a or MXII . I asked him to measure the headtube & it should be 4 inches .

Here it is after i have changed some of the parts that were on it , as you can see in picture 5 there is the remains of red paint under the gusset. Also in picture 3 you can see that there is no triangle strenghtener bit that i understand is on the 600a.

Don't think it is a Series 3 102B frame (600a) as they should have the little gusset behind the seat tube/rear upper stays as you say and as mine has

Cheers Bren , i will measure the top tube tomorrow .Does the 85 at the beginning of the serial indicate the year?? as the serials i have seen on redlines (80's ones) start with R then another letter for the year . I will see if i can find anything on that 600cxl you mention.  :daumenhoch:

Paul  :coolsmiley:

Could only find this on the WWW   http://www.23mag.com/mags/bpl/bpl86.htm , they did a test on the 600cxl in the april edition but showns no piccys  :(

identifying frames is fun, part of the mystic of collecting from years ago when the numbers didn't matter unless you needed them to give to the cops to get it back after some scum stole it. stickers are useless cause anyone can put em on. looking at as many examples of the same thing seems to be the best way cause most frames had their own peculiarities. here's my thoughts on your frame.
i'm thinking it's a 1985 MXIII. it wouldn't be earlier due to the bends along the bottom of the drop out. there's no BB cross brace. it's a 4" head tube with correct forks.
the 600 was the full moly frame but with a little gusset above the brake bridge on the seat tube. i'm not 100% sure but i think the 600's had the serial stamped on the rear drop outs. if i'm incorrect please don't shoot, maim or kill me.............it'll mean that i'll have learnt something as well.

http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/redline/1215

having said that, you've built a very fine example of what i think were the best bikes of their time. redline of course.

Interesting stuff. Trying to identify a frame is good fun  :) , i love the not knowing , how old , what model , is it rare etc etc i love learning off other restorers and hopefully we will all hit a common ground as to what it is  :daumenhoch:  :daumenhoch:

Bloody Hell , a pl20 . I would love to in the future mate as i have only just got it , but rest assured that you will be the first person i contact when i do.Do you think i should re-powder the front section red ?? as it looks like thats what it used to be or should i just leave it ?? there is dulling/lifting of the chrome around the BB but not rust (if you know what i mean) . it was probably caused when they tried stripping the paint.

Thank You again Bren , its very much appreciated.I have never seen a 600cxl and probably won't see another as i never knew there was one  :LolLolLolLol:.

Looks like a great find you have there Paul. I've never even heard of the 600cxl.

But glad to see another Redline. There seems to have been a real spate of the lately.

As Tony said they are a class bike. Just got a real air of beauty and class.

lets all go find some more.

Can do, I was liking the green...  for a bit of a change.

BMXStop do the decals or you can get them on ebay, I think they are on the RL20 II sheet. Not sure how good they are though...

Did you down load the 1986 lit on the link I posted, check out the 800pl, you can see where the powder stops and the chrome starts :daumenhoch:

It will be mine...  oh yes ::)

Cheers Bud , Yes i downloaded the catalog  :daumenhoch: .I think it would be good to get it back to how it should be , even though it looks very very nice in chrome it should be red up front . I will probably take it to the powder coaters next week.
So Bren , is it an unusual bike to see ie - not common , i wouldn't ask if it was rare as even though i have never seen one don't mean that there aint loads knocking around  :) .
Your help and information has been priceless , Big Thank You  :4_17_5:

Yes, it's the 1st one I've seen over here, been  a few on Ebay.com but they don't go for big money... it's from era that time forgot ;)

MXII sort of  or less, but a lot more unusual :daumenhoch:

excellent info bren. i didn't even know that model existed, or if this was a world wide model or marketed in a particular continent. i wonder if it was a later version of the mxII/III with a fancy paint job. so many unknowns is what it's all about, good fun.
