Didn't know whether to put this in racing or freestyle as I know Chris started out as a racer on Mongoose but gained most of his fame as a freestyler on Skyway/Haro.
Anyway, was packing my stuff up today at Hayes when an old geezer and another fella started chatting to me. Turns out it was Chris Young (former Mongoose, Skyway and Haro pro) and his parents. Chris is keen to get back into BMX (tried to buy a cruiser today) and I also told him about this site as I guess there will be people on here who knew or rode with him.
I mentioned that Billy Stupple frequented this site and he seemed keen to get back in touch and maybe even meet up with the old school fresstylers at one of the Rom reunions you guys have.
Anyway, if anyone out there knows Chris and would like to get in touch with him I have his dad's e-mail address to pass on.
It sounds like Chris still has it in the skills department as he told me he 360'd the Hayes Pro doubles today on a borrowed bike! Wish I'd seen that, cos I always thought Chris was a rad rider. One of my earliest memories of BMX was a Mongoose ad in OBMX featuring Andy Ruffell, Matt Oakley and Chris Young.
-
That is good news :) He's had his share of problems in recent years....
I rode regularly with him on the Skyliners team, and at Rom of course. Would love to see him back on a bike :)
-
chris was a great rider I rode with him a few times but he left bmx just as it was getting really big. It would be good to see him back at Rom.
-
Mike I`d love to get in touch, could you pm his e-mail address to me :daumenhoch:
-
that would be ace to get chris on rad :4_17_5:
is this the pic u mean?

look at those snake belly tyres :coolsmiley:
i'd love another couple of sets of those ;)
-
I know its Chris Young but who was Chris Bishop?
-
Feck knows what happened with Chris`s name on that one, perhaps we`ll get the chance to ask him now :daumenhoch:
-
yeah I last saw Chris at the 85 Holeshot and he had left Skyway I think and was without a sponser. I could be wrong . I never saw chris at any shows or comps again. He was bloody good though he rode a lot like you Mr Stupple.
-
In that advert above, why do all but the Ruff appear to be wearing a white fronted shirt over their mongoose top? or have they just been in the wash too often? ;)
I think I was really getting into it just as Chris Young was getting out of it, so he wasn't in most of the mags I read, but wasn't he in that Dave Spurdens book and the Action Bike Annual?
-
Yeah we rode together for a couple of years between 82-84, we sort of drifted apart a bit after Peter Hawkins took over as the manager of the Skyway team after the Skyway European tour of 83, Chris was off the team and Craig was in. We still rode as the Skyway team for the first Kellogs though as our names must have been put forward before the split, so Chris rode instead of Craig even though he wasn`t on the freestyle team at that time. Last time I saw Chris was at the first holeshot do at the Sobel centre, and I remember him starting his run with a long one footed peg wheelie (manual). I believe he had a stint on Haro after that with Rob Bell. Be nice to meet him again :daumenhoch:
-
bill were you a factory rider over here? im reading through the lines here! if you were please excusa my ignoramus did you meet up with the factory riders from usa?

A word of advice for you young man; I suspect you know nothing of Chris and his life after BMX. I only know what i've heard and what I've read, which is of course gonna be very wide of the truth i'm sure.... but still, a friend is a friend to me and I'll be welcoming him with open arms.
I suggest you be cool and keep you words of wisdom to yourself until you've met the man and got to know him. Fair enough?
-
i dont know the guyyour right , i have read nothing and know nothing about the guy so why would i judge him? i never made a rude remark whatsoever just chalanged the guy to a race thats all ! fair enuff old man?
-
No.
-
mr 69ner,u always say bad things about everyone
-
Chris was a great bloke, and a good racer b4 freestyle took off, it would be great to get him on here, even better if he can make ROM. Now wheres Craig and fraser Cambell???
-
its all good news ,i would love to see chris ride again,i last saw him at mr scott webs gaff he was of on a road trip in a converted van with his mate .he was an inspiration btd a good old schooler .i wouldnt mind his pops email so i can put him back in contact with barry as they were good friends.marvelous stuff :)

Fraser Cambell can be seen skating in and around London, Craig is DJing and skating (the last I heard).
One for Billstup and Chris Young; What happened to Andy Heath? I'd love to see him again but sadly I've heard bad things - i sincerely hope they're untrue :(
-
Are you in contact with Barry the Dan, if you are then pass on my best wishes to him, and what do you want to know then Mark, and make sure it`s a fit question for the site, or pm me :daumenhoch:

We`ll have to wait for Chris to answer that one Rob as I`havent seen or heard from him since I gave up at the end of 84.
-
yes mate i will mail him in a moment and give him a big hallow from you and all on rad as he was a good help to quite a few of old schoolers ,giving alot of time and effort to the sport.
-
Barry was the UK Skyway manager for the 83 tour, but was replaced by Peter Hawkins by late 83 or early 84, tbh I think that Peter coveted the job and eased Barry out of the picture so he could get Craig on the team :(
-
Need to find Chris's old team mate Rob Bell now :daumenhoch:
-
last time i c chris young was gillingham park 87, i know he used 2 live in anerley about a coupla miles from me.
-
Need to find Chris's old team mate Rob Bell now :daumenhoch:
I was good friends with Rob BITD, we lived pretty close to each other, I have not seen him for 20 years, he used to live just across the road from Tooting Broadway underground station. I also did a few shows/demo's with Chris & Rob around the time they rode for Haro, I remember going to Alpine Action to collect Rob's Chrome 84 Master with him. Also my TA from BITD I got off Chris.
Would be great to get them both on here :)
-
hey bill any chance you can put them photos of chris up that i gave you a few year back cant find em , and maybe educate someone what he could do...............
-
Love to see any old Pics. of Chris Young, anyone here got any? I remember Chris and Billy riding a Skyway Demo at Chatham race track - doing big airs on the old Skyway quarter pipe, looked so much more fun than getting all muddy racing round a track.
I remember a BMX Action Bike center spread of Chris Young doing an x - up, well over crossed, it was so cool looking. It really inspired me. Anyone have that pic?

I think he was trying for 10 cars, but the day was very windy so he only made 8 or 9, I was there that day, I think it was somewhere near where he used to live, Pollards Hill area, but I can't remember for sure ???
-
I still have that Jump on video, the wind was in his face and his dad was drying the ramp with a blow lamp!, he kept landing on the flat part that covered the last few cars.

No reply yet Pete :( if I get a chance I`ll try giving them a ring :daumenhoch:
-
I know this topic dates back to nov 06 but its brought back some old memories :'(good ole days.somewhere at home i have a video of chris's car jump i'll try and find it.Me and the other new boy..i mean man...pro tec,we rode sometimes with chris young around penge, beckenham and especially betts park in anerley does anyone remember that place?it was rows and rows of big humps.Me and pro-tec even rode to there once with chris and Andy patterson the american pro when he came to england and stayed with chris young at his parents house.remember thinking how f*cking cool we was turning up with chris and andy patterson.
Someone also mentioned andy heath?if its the andy heath i'm thinking of then we used to hang out together for a while but he turned into a glue sniffer when he was about 18-19-years old.I'll make a phonecall and find out the score with him
-
Probably me asking about Andy Heath. I rode with him a great deal back then, top bloke. I heard he got into allsorts, glue and stuff. I also heard he had passed away - which would be very sad if true.
Lets hope I'm wrong :)
-
I've heard Its a possibility that he joined the army years ago and did quite well for himself ???i must admit years ago i heard he was no longer with us.oh well we'll see what occurs.
I
remember going to rom with him in about 1985 in an old austin 1800 land crab thing, think it was his first car...he hadn't done much on his bmx for a while and ended up bending his bike showing off to a load of youngsters ;D
-
That sounds just like him. I've got some photos of him absolutely skying out of the end of the halfpipe at Rom.
And his bloody coat...... Camo jacket it rained, bomber jacket it stayed dry. or summat like that ;D
I can see him i the army though - and doing well. :daumenhoch:
-
Now you've mentioned the camo jacket we are definatley talking about the same person ha ha ha i remember the camo jacket ;Dhe started listening to doo wop fifties music and quiffing his air up.....started wearing an american college jacket.i have a picture some where of him on my brothers bike doing a endo out side pro-tec house with a quiff and baseball jacket.
-
;D ;D ;D
Be good to see him back on a bike if its possible :)
-
I may have rode with you and Pro-tec at some time then, I rode with Chris around Anerley a lot bitd :daumenhoch:
-
did you ever try ringing Chris, Billy?
-
Chris was at the regional at Andover in December and he bought
himself a Cruiser there.
-
Man alive this is bringing back some memories! Bumped into Andy Young around 6 years ago, think he was doing a little building work at the time. Didn't mention Chris much though.
Last I heard of my old comrade Andy Heath or 'Eefy' as he was known as he was known in Sarf London he was a military man. Earned a few stripes by all accounts too. That was around 5 years ago though. Do hope he's OK, he was always a bit of a nutjob (the best kind though. Gawd bless 'im).
Yeah Spillers, I remember Betts Park you old name dropper you.
Billstup, I remember you alright. Although I reckon I'm around 4 years younger than you and Andy Heath. And when your a teenager that equates to around 5 feet of air's difference (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).
-
did you ever try ringing Chris, Billy?
No not yet, I did send an e-mail though, but never got a reply :(
-
well as some of you now know i'm alive and well and racing again!!
i did indeed join the army and ended up as an instructor.
i see chris now and again and speak to him on the phone every few weeks now after not seeing him since 86,
i'm trying to get him to race again in old school at Hersden but transport is a problem, if any one can get him there then i will supply a bike for him.
good news is he's really trying to put his past behind him :daumenhoch:

I saw Chris young (Pip) pass me by on a pushbike about 9 months ago.
I had gone to see a mate of mine who lives in South Norwood off the Portland road.
By the time it had registered in my mind it was him, he had gone.
I had not seen Chris last since I was 16 (I’m now 40) when I bought my 1st motorbike from him an AR50 Kawasaki
I use to live in a block of flats on the Croydon road opposite Betts park in Anerley
I went to junior school with the Llewellyn brothers..... Stewart Fleming by Birbeck station where their house was also near.
Gary would carry my Grifter down the stairs from the flat I lived in, when I was just 8.
They were both big Fookers then i was just a squirt.
BMX then came around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And bit us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....
My best friend James Francis who also had a Grifter at the time (and also went to Stewart Fleming) went on holiday to the states and brought back a Mongoose....
Our Destiny Was Set In Concrete!
James then got a Redline MX II in Candy red S’Wee’T
Steven Godfrey got a “Goose..Warren Godfrey got a “Super “Goose both also went to Stewart Fleming.
All These boys named above used to race
Wayne didn’t have a decent ride back then.
He got spotted by Team Brian Smith.
Brian Smith lived down the same road as Chris and Andy Young’s house and had a yard where he would keep his race bikes and work from.(screen printing)
I last saw Gary when I was about 19 at a bus stop in Beckenham.
Is was then riding my RD350LC, I pulled over on to say hello.
I offen wonder what happened to all these boys and others from Betts park as listed below:-
Elmers End area
Darren Mole (Hutch)
Jim (Darren’s Mate) (Robinson)
Tim (White Bassett)
Foxes wood area
Clive Goslin
Martin his cousin
Darren and Gary Critch
South Norwood
Bo
Black Rodger (Robinson)
Just thought I might share some of my memories with you all and maybe jolt some other RAD members minds.

100% certain that he rode speedway for Rye House in the early nineties, our paths crossed a few times then and I am sure at a meeting once, might have been a testimonial for another rider he did his car jumping trick, he drifted away from speedway about 1993 I believe.

Nice touch Andy.
Love the poster of the 'Young One'!! :smitten:
I used to smoke around on a Chrome MCS Magnum until I was 13 then got a Black RM2 Raceinc from Youngs in Lee (Lewisham)
Chris was about 2 years older than me.
I remember when He 1st turned up on his Skyway TA at Betts and then the Haro freestyler frame set...
Their woz nothing out their like that except for Torkers and how rare were they !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must have called at least a dozen Ambulances from our flat over the road back in the day.
Kids would try and jump the double ramps at Betts..... We of course would egg them on ::)
Lumps on heads like golf balls.... several teeth missing..and hair blowing away in the wind like tumble weed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But all back to normal after we dispenced of another victim.
I do miss them days.....FOCK!!!

Freestyler with gold bits? being a nerd i yearn for such every time i see a post 'my new haro freestyler' but it's only ever black tuffs and kin vector bars :-\
x 2 there pal, as good as they look its always nice to see these great old pics and bikes built like Chris's :daumenhoch:
did you notice his grips are on back to front aswell?
they'll be fine when he spins the bars back round ;D
i keep meaning to ask him why he ran them like that

It's basic physics, those grips with the bit sticking out the front you're just weakening the hold your fingers has on the bars-while adding onto the back, i don't know, maybe there's a market there? Mind you with the modern mindset it's a gram or two :-\
