Depending on tyre size you might like to play around with this to achieve a rough 44/16 rollout http://www.geocities.com/lakebmxracing/gearcalculator.html
or there's a thread on BMX Talk which might help http://www.bmxtalk.com/viewtopic.php't=8914
Crank length will play an important part too and how strong your legs are.  Lots of opinions.  Humps

Most guys run 41-18 or equivalent ,like humps says there are lots
of factors to consider, myself being a slimmer chap in the leg dept
am on 40-18 and even run 39-18 on short tracks, the old spin to
win is my motto.
