i remeber reading that he'd died in ride years ago but never found out what happened to him,
can anyone solve this mystery for me?
-
It seemed a mystery to everyone, even his close ones.
He dropped while on his post round.
Apparently its looking like it was SADS - "Sudden Adult/Arrhythmia Death Syndrome".

I remember talk of maybe undiagnosed acute diabetes, but I think the other reason sounds more the real cause.
-
thanks for the explanation, i always thought it was a motorbike accident like mario soto,
god bless anway,

Sadly, sadly missed.
A great man and it was a pleasure to have known him.
-
That happened around the time I got back into BMX, a very sad thing.
I was lucky enough to go the tribute race they held at Slough as a memorial, I've found the link to the race report on Bucky's old site if anyones interested.

Time flies doesn't it? It'll be 6 years in Feb that Winnie died. :(
I was at that race too, but I took the "Winnie" route!
This was the sort of weekend that Winnie would have left his bike in the boot of his car for, we all shared the same thought that he must have been looking down on us all and thinking we must have been all mad !!..He was right !!..
Typical Winnie :)
There was no way that my bike was coming out in that weather! I postponed my flight to California by a day so that I could be there. I didn't fancy cleaning it to get it back in my flight bag!
-
It was a filthy day, why I raced a white bike in a white kit I dont know... ::)
Craig Scofield crashed soooo hard in the os final the track shook.
I've still got the program somewhere, I'll scan the obituary bit if I can find it, very interesting/moving.

Some old skool pics of Winnie when he rode for Ammaco.

Buckmore Bat kindly lent me his bike so that I could race that day, as I didn't have one at the time. He still hasn't told me how long he took to clean it afterwards!!!

That was the biggest funeral I have been too, the Met police turned a blind eye to parking restrictions that day and helped out with traffic problems
What a top bloke......he would have LOVED all the stuff on this site

Only just found this topic, the day of his funeral will be etched in my mind forever :'( So true about the parking, trying to get the coaches in was a complete mare but Winnie would have laughed his arse off :LolLolLolLol:

My mum and I used to take Winnie to a lot of races and I can honestly say that he was one of the most genuine and generous people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
We had many a night in a hotel room polishing our hubs for the following days race.
I don't cry much but the last time I cried properly in my life was on Simon Hayes' mum's shoulder at Winnies funeral.
Love you mate, missed you over the years. Clive
