Title: Question about restoring my Gen1
Post by: jezza on December 31, 2006, 07:20 PM
hiya guys the frame especially is quite rusted mostly suface me thinks, and its deffo goin to the chromers.

i want to prep the frame as much as possible before sending as this will save me money on the chroming job

can i:
1. sandpaper the frame to rid the surface rust. have tried on a small area first and this seems to work nicely. obviously this is marking the chrome work but seen as its going through a rechrome i didnt think this mattered.
2. I have noticed 1 ding on the seat tube will i need to get the frame stripped before i send it to be fixed.
3. Where would i send it to be fixed

Sorry for all the questions but this is a new area of resto for me, its going to be my 1st chrome bare metal resto and i want to get it right

any other advice would be greatly received

thanks and happy new year

jezza how about posting up some pics of said frame and forks matey....

from the little pics you posted up before i reckon your frame is salvagable in its present condition....with a bit of elbow grease.

Dave

the camera is on my phone and although its a nokia n93 with a good lens it still takes crap pics. ill post the pics that were on the ebay ad.

the frame is very far gone on the surface rust i have wire wooled alot and that wont shift some of it especially around the BB. but its the ding i need to sort so i would need that stripping right?

so you see, i dont believe all bikes need a rechrome, and i seem to have taken more of a different veiw in regards to survivor bikes now being the way forward

jezza

get some wood bleach aka oxalic acid

the results are amazing

plus you can leave the decals on

might save you some £££,s on a rechrome/redecal

nice job.  8)
i totally agree about the survivor debate. I'll give it a lot more work and see how it goes.
the only problem i see is the seat tube as its completely lost its shine, personally i think its going to need a chrome but i will get some close ups of the problem

If you do go for re-chroming you can get the platers to strip the frame, then get it back and do some detailed prep work yourself. Then it goes back to them for the chroming. I have got 2 frames in the mid stage of this at the moment (they are actually getting some welding done as well so the chrome had to be re-done).

It's the way that Biagio does his re-chrome jobs. It means you arent in the hands of the platers as far as putting the time into the prep work.
