Hi Radders :daumenhoch:,
Ok, need some advice regarding tyres for a O/S ride to use for MK. At the 2006 MK meet I was riding new school on I think 20x2.195 upfront and 20x1.75 on the rear but the back end was slidin out on the berms (think the tyres were for ramp use doh :crazy2:!!!)
Can anyone advise best tyres/sizing set up for MK on my O/S ride.....it won't make any difference to my performance but may give me a bit more confidence.
Many thanks
Paul :)

ive never had any probs with 1.75 back and 2.195 up front comp3's :daumenhoch:
-
I'm losing my comp III's for OS racing as there crap. Going for some new school racing tyres, probably Maxxis.
-
its ashame they still dont do skinwalls on nu school tires :'(
-
I'm sure someone does them, saw some on here the other day???
-
Thanks fellas......how about Panaracer Knarly Knobblers. Seen some on AlansBMX but want to get some advice before committing, they look chunky/grippy enough??
I've been meaning to ask, what's the difference between gumwall and skinwall tyres as well?
-
Are you trying to keep the bike period correct? If not go for some new school racing tyres as thay are 100 times better. I am finding the Comp III design skecthy even on my 'ONE' race bike so there going to be swapped out soon.
-
knarly's are good tires ive use them in the past skin and gum are the same just different way of saying it unless its the slight difference in shade ? ive allways called then tan walls ?
-
i run 2.175 up front and 1.75 comp 3 copies its ok
this year i wanna get the pressure up from 40psi to 60 but not sure they will handle it
Cos NS tyres run much higher pressures with no hassle
and are better for the tracks we have now
-
New School:
Tioga Comp X
Maxxis- Maxx Daddy or Holy Roller
IRC Siren
Old School:
Comp 2 , 3 or 4 (Comp 3 copies ok for racing)
Knarler Knobby
I would deffo recommend 20x1.75 rear , 20x2.125 front :daumenhoch: . ( MK can be a little slippy in the turns ) .
-
all me old school bikes have comp 3,s or knarler knobbies
work fine for me
although i did have one major frontwheel wash out @ daggers
in the summer ,and that was my own fault :LolLolLolLol:
the difference between gum and skin wall
is in there respective names
skin wall tyres are lighter
and have thinner sides ( u can see the weave )
gum wall tyres are heavier
and have thicker sides ( u cant see the weave )
hope this helps
-
i like the new tioga comp 3 or xon front of my park ride they are good tyres
-
its ashame they still dont do skinwalls on nu school tires :'(
I use skinwall new school tyres, I have a set of Primo V-tracks and a set of Primo Dirt Monsters.
Here are the V-tracks on my old retro GT.

-
I bought a set from Winstanleys about 2 months ago Kev.
-
i rember dirt monsters i havnt seen any for ages
-
i rekon for racing the intense ones or the tioga comp 3,s mate
-
Cheers all, some top suggestions for me to mull over the next few months before MK. Everyone is well helpful on this site :4_17_5:
There's too much choice ::) I'm not fussy what period the tyres fall in....however would new school tyres on an o/s ride be seen as an advantage come race day.......it's not like I'm gonna blitz everyone anyway if you saw me last year at MK :LolLolLolLol:
-
Defo use a 20x2.125 up front as it gives you more confidense but make sure you use it on a 20x1.75 rim or larger if you use the fat tyre on a 1.5 rim it can mess up the tyre profile (depending on make)
I've used comp 3 skinwalls since I started riding again and had no probs running 55psi ( I used to like Knarlers BITD but haven't rode any lately).
BITD I thought Comp 4's and Grippas were shit
Look at the condition of the tyres you are going to use aswell make sure the rubber is still flexible and hasn't gone off (Hard)
Cheers
Andy
P.S. I use comp X on my new school bike and quite like them.
-
AH stidds i was all excited and ready to drive to Bristol with a box of chocs
then when i got there 1.75 only no 2.1 's :( :'(
and as andy says above def need a 2.1 up front
oh well

For a slippery track like MK try these :daumenhoch:

I am trying IRC Sirens on my N/S 20" this year
:) DINGO :)
-
MK resurfaced last week, looking gooood :daumenhoch:
2.1front and 1.95 rear is best for MK. Maxiss if going new, if staying retro try some Kendas mine work fine.
-
Any tyres slip out at MK if you carve the corner too hard. I use 60-80psi depending how recently it's been re-surfaced.
I find drirt monsters fine, I've got one on the back of my Standard at the moment, I even used them on my Quadangle at the first few Alan old school races.
I don't go much on 20" comp3's these days and they feel terrible on tarmac berms (not that MK has any of those), but I have to say I rode my 24" S&M safety cycle that has them on over Chicksands 4X track new years eve and I flying, no traction problems at all and that place is fast.
My next experement with rubber will be Tioga comp X's for the front.
-
Ive been using comp x tyres on my cruiser for a while, good on the tarmac, think id pick them over comp 3s
-
comp x are my faves but what do i know i use to love grippa tyres. eh mr plinky :LolLolLolLol:
-
What about the Factory MX's, any good? Look very similar to late 70's, early 80's MX tyres wondering whether to use them on a resto of a bike from 1979/80 that I'm doing or whether to put Comp 3's on it :-\ .
-
