so how did you gate back then or still today.
i did at the begining one foot on ground fully leaning back then lobbed all forward when gate dropped.
later all the gear come together fast ass gater .2 pedal start pulling over the gate full bore and loved it.it was a banned thou but looked cool.so what about you lot.
-
i was watching last years uci racing'lots of riders these dats use the sling shot method 'when the gate drops pull back and fire off :daumenhoch: looks good not sure myself
-
Thanks to 796, nishiki and Jimwise, I have now mastered the "NO PEDAL" start, Its where you start out by balancing on both pedals, tensed like a gazelle, then 796 and Jim or sam push you over just as the countdown starts, wikkid start, last place everytime :daumenhoch:
-
:2funny: :'(
-
the first few races i did 2 pedal starts i would put so much pressure on the bars the grips would try to twist the bars would flex and so much pressure on the pedals the rear wheel would spin, gate would drop and slip a pedal crack me knee end of race.so by the end of my racing days it was so much easier no pressure light to the touch just firm grip good balance and timing.

Cool! at last something to do with BMX that isn't going to take lots of practice to master! :daumenhoch:
-
girls would beat me know :2funny:
-
my sister used to beat me then :(
-
When we raced last but one at Braintree, I was getting some great starts, Im still working on that sitting down and balancing malarkey that the new school boys have mastered
-
BITD I used the following method:
2 foot start with my weaker leg on the 1st stroke, so my 2nd pedal really popped.
Right hand was wrapped further around the front of the bar than my left.
Front wheel lined up straight and true on the gate, the rear of the bike was angled slightly to the left.
Oh the things we do when we are kids. :LolLolLolLol:
-
BADLY :LolLolLolLol:
Still do unfortunatley :tickedoff:
:) DINGO :)
-
BITD i used to start with both feet on pedals. Tried it last year at MK but couldnt balance so had to have 1 foot on pedal and 1 on floor. Need some more practice ready for this years MK
-
i just hope i have 2 feet left for mk
-
Try to do two footers, couldnt BITD cant now, im fookin hopeless, my inability to get a decent gate would be legendary if i raced more, a fraction of a nano second before the gate drops i lean to the side and fall off the pedals and i giggle like an idiot to myself all the way down the start hill ;D
-
just got back into racing at xmas, can just about do 2 footed start a bit wobbly still, i can get out of the gate pretty fast but i slow down at the step ups, cant jump anything yet, practice practice practice :daumenhoch:
-
I start more or less the same now as I did in the 80's, just now you go on the bibs or the lights so you can predict the gate droping and go earlier.
Set up with my lead foot ever so slighly higher than the other one, right foot (front one) slightly pointing inwards, then I sit down. When the box starts talking to me I stand up and lean back, on the second or third beep depending on the speed of the gate I pull back a bit then, lunge forward as hard as I can, keeping my weight over the bars to hold the front wheel down to stop me looping out, also you don't get nearly as much snap when you wheelie right down the tarmac to the bottom.
Every one does it differently, it what suits you and how you feel fastest that matters. :daumenhoch:
If you want to give a sling shot a try watch this http://www.bmxvideo.net/cgi-bin/ImageFolio4/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Videos&image=Analysis_SlingShot.wmv&img=&tt=mpg (http://www.bmxvideo.net/cgi-bin/ImageFolio4/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Videos&image=Analysis_SlingShot.wmv&img=&tt=mpg) They scare the life out of me, I can just about do them, when I get it right it's awesome, but when I get it wrong I either get left for dead, or hit the gate into a nice front flip. ::)
-
i have a combo
of 1 and 2 footed start
it looks like im gonna do a 1 footed
but as the gates goes
i place me standing foot on the pedal
and go go go ;D
i did have bitd the day a real fast start
and good balance
but after 20 odd years of greenery
its all shot 2 f@ck now

OK now hands up who still practices start gate balance against the wall/nearest solid object
-
 thats about all I can practise

hehe I don't know what's worse; that I still practice it or how bad i am :idiot2: Again let's blame mary jane :LolLolLolLol:
-
Im sure its charlies fault
-
pmsl yup charlie, mary jane and billy all done for us ;)
-
so back to the thread :buck2:, who raced back then on a regular basis, and did you have your own practise gate?
-
we had this white metal thing that was covered in grip tape with a kick bar to release the gate from memory :smitten: posher than a wall eh :LolLolLolLol:
-

Yep, remember bitd a few of my mates cracked their frames from too much pressure while balancing causing their frames to go at the gusset :(

I think you may have the answer as to why I broke my redline forks, It allways puzzled me as I never jumped or rode street on the proline

Could be Tony, walls don't flex much so the pressure has got to go somewhere so the f&f and bars will absorb a lot of it, the twisting is what does it I think :(
-
bothe feet on the pedals, strong leg forward at 80 degrees when gate drops lift bars and push forward at the same time power on the vranks ,imagine you are getting chased by a groub of bum bandits and pedal like fook

LMFAO ;D :2funny:
-
Mr Fox having just read your detailed analysis of how you gate I can confirm that I race exactly the same way as you for the first 30cm of every race. After that, I'm fooked.
-
Didn't race back in the. My first race experience was MK06.
I can't do 2 pedal starts, so stick with the 1 pedal only. Can only balance for about half a sec before falling.
Gonna practice and get it though! :daumenhoch:
