Title: Dave & Pete's Most Excellent Adventure - How to Pick up a Bird.
Post by: Stodgy on February 21, 2007, 08:47 AM
Me and pete drove 110 miles last night to the seaside at Eastborne to pick a bird...then treated ourselves to a bag of fish n chips overlooking the pier and then 110 miles home again!

She was well thumbed, but in excellent nick for her age...much better than I expected and luckily much older than I thought too...

1993 Hoffman Condor...

Finally! And it's all thanks to my eagle eyed friend Harris - who from now on will be refered to as 'Our Lord Dan'. I can't thank you enough mate - I am forever in your debt.

And a big thanks to birthday boy Pete Quadrophenia for coming all the way down with me! It was a most excellent adventure.

The restoration begins, oh and the search for 93 Condor forks to replace the Super Forks attached...apparently the previous owner snapped them!

Well done Dave, really pleased for you. I have been trying to get you one but you (and magic Dan) got there first. Make sure you dont say what it cost you or someone will tell you that you have ripped the owner off and that you should have paid more!

Look forward to seeing its progress, and it finished. Did I tell you I had 2 TNT stems? Do you want them both now?

Yesterday I remembered someone else I used to ride with who had an early condor. I will still try and get it for you.

And yup, 16mm drops - but luckily Mark knows a man...

Alex - thanks mate, all leads to track down those other F&F's would be awesome mate - and thank you for all your investigation!

Luckily, the guy knew what is was, so he got the right money for it on ebay.

So, all's good!

His race car mate will be re-constructing the drop-outs like on Fuzzy's one...the pattern is allready there, so it's just a matter of paying race-car supremo wages. But  it'll be worth it.

I was obliged to keep schtumm on this one, and I too was shocked at the end price. Thought it'd probably go for around £50 if someone else with a well-trained eye had picked up on it.
Did anyone go for the 16mm axle wheels?

Post by: Wayne Ryder on February 21, 2007, 01:39 PM
Oh, well done.
What's the deal with them? The two restoration Condors I've seen on here have both had the 16mm axles. Were they a team item?
Was this a team-issue bike? Wouldn't mind knowing some of its history.
Title: Re: Dave & Pete's Most Excellent Adventure - How to Pick up a Bird.
Post by: Stodgy on February 21, 2007, 01:53 PM
Hia Wayne - I think it's just coincidence.

I believe people started going for 16mm axles in the search for ultimate strength.

Both this frame and Fuzzy's one were owned by competing riders, so chances are they were both hardcore and heavy on parts. The guy who we picked the frame up from said his mate was forever breaking parts, so he made his own...look at the headset and the hubs aparently made by him.

I'm looking forward to finding out more history about it. There were competition tags on the bars which were with the frame (Phil won them in another auction from the same guy), they read: KOC Custom Riders, KOC Red Bull and KOC 99. That's all the info I have at the moment, but am going to have a chat with the seller tonight to see if I can glean a bit more. Oh, I also know that it was owned by the same guy from 92 through to 2003 and he rode it constantly - he only changed frame when he won a new one in a comp in 2003.

The seller was really pleased that it was going to be restored and was going to let it's previous owner know - he now lives in Canada. So, no doubt we can get to the bottom of it's full history.

Should be a fun project.

Yeah, it was a bit weird...they were the first batch, would have shipped together, we're then ridden all their lives by one person, competed on, comps won on and then left in a garage for 3 years before being re-discovered - then ending up with some old git!

Oooo spooky...  :D

Little Update.

Just noticed on the stem that the back of the top plate has been ground down to allow for clearance of that massive headset when run upsidedown (he had the stem upsidedown on the bars)...shame. And acording to YGT's superfork guide, they are Gen 2 superforks, US made.

They were fecking excellent fish n chips.

The funny thing was, we were driving down the seafront and Pete was going..."oooo, ooo, there's an italian ice cream shop down here on the right", "there's a fish n chips shop down that road", "there's a big pie shop on the corner in half a mile time"...

He plots the whole damn country by his stomach!!!

Apparently he did. And YGT Mark has just been on to Dan to say that the headset and hubs are by a small UK company called Rekka...well I think I may have found some evidence to support that:

Sticker on the top tube reads 'Equipped by Rekka Engineered Like a Brick Shithouse'

Yeah there was a bit of blue on there but I already knew from the original owner it was blue .

Darren Claggit not long after he bought it from backyard as a frame and forks kit.

Dont worry Dave, I have got a man who can re-do your drop-outs if you want. I was only keeping quiet cos I didnt want to take Marks glory of fixing a Condor. My man will do a great job, wont charge much at all .... but it might take him a good few months to get round to doing it. And your condor will be at the back of the que behind 2 PKs, an 84 sport, a Gen 1 Haro, a Mk1 pro burner and a 91 dirtbike. Wow, thats quite some que!

No, just one. Can you guess which? ha ha. Yep, the dirtbike! Oh, hang on, the 84 sport is mine too. The PKs are "Vert Squerts" (He's riding one in the "Mons Jams" shots), the Gen1 belongs to the guy who does the work (Geoff) and the Pro burner is a mate of mines, but Im building it for him.

Pretty similar to Fuzzy Mark's bike as it's close to the original spec - with exception of a couple of bits to ring the changes from Marks...

ace find stodge, well pleased for you
it was dan that i got my hardest to find bike off!!!

as for the drops - they look like they are cut for gack hubs. super huge axles

but phil rekka used to make hubs too (aswell as other stuff). maybe they were cut for a rekka rear hub

all UK stuff. rekka used to ride at KOC and his bike had some high quality home made stuff

(wasn't he one of the first dudes to use oversized axles?)

the gack hubs he made in the early nineties had super big axles.

these were the hubs that mongoose kinda copied

gsport hubs are the best though. 22mm axles. you wont bend them fookers. bolt in too with 14mm bolts

I believe it was Phil Rekka's bike - the chap we picked the frame up off said that the previous owner was phil someone (didn't catch the name at the time), and he made all his own parts because he just broke everything else...so, it's history is slowly coming together...I just tried phoning the seller, but there is no answer...

Dan has the wheels from the bike and Phil has the bars, cranks and pedals...

As much as you wanna pay dude and dependent on condition - they don't come up often...in fact this is only the second in 2 years that I know of. I really couldn't put a guide on them.

Sorry - not much help I know. But they are just not about, but if you really really want one then pay what you feel comfortable with.

UPDATE

Right, just spoke to the guy I got the frame off.

It was ridden and owned by a guy called Phil Evans from Hastings - he competed at a high amatuer level, everything from flatland to vert all on the Condor.

He was a machinist and engineer and definately made the hubs & headset on the bike...so is he the 'Phil' that ran Rekka? I don't know yet, he's going to find out for me.

He was well know in Hastings and the surrounding area, and had big dreds a few years ago...he was also good friends with the owner of Backyard.

Ring any bells with anyone?

Did he and Darren Glaggit have any connection?

Hmmmm all these questions and more will be answers when we go 'through the keyhole'...da da da daaaaa

they seem to be very underated imo. all the condors  that come up seem to go for cheap, unless its one of us numpty's, and when you show them to people you meet a lot of head scratching.

people appreciate them for being a "nice looking bike" but not, it seems, the ethos behind them, and if you know that, you will be willing to fork out your soul, if not, they are just a cheapish (in cost) outdated chrome frame from the nineties.

I got a letter from Kris Gack back in 1991 when he first started making hubs and he was using 1/2" axles to begin with according to his letter.
Later on he became in charge of production when hoffman started producing inhouse.

Me too  :daumenhoch:  Way better than any other thread this long at the moment  :LolLolLolLol:

You've got to love the Hoffman bikes, when I got my Flash and was waiting for it to arrive I was unsure (as you know Dan  ;)) of whether to keep it, I wanted a Condor or a Hutch then when I got it and took it out of the box WOW!  Quality welds, great chrome and a cracking looking bike.  These Condors are the same and it's great to read about the history of the bikes that Mark and Dave have now got.   The Rekka connection is awesome and really adds to the value of the bike, not financially but in terms of its heritage, just like the action shot of Mark's bike - shows they were riders, ridden well and used for what they were designed for  :daumenhoch:

Pete, were the fish and chips that good?

ye the 1990s bikes have a limited audience as not many rode back then
which makes it our job to help push it forward in the way it needs.

like the peregrines as ive a couple of sets of the phat jack 10/14 slotted vershions with big bearings
and much fatter spokes, they are that big they dont fit any other peregrine rim.so did
they /he get them specialy made or would you think peregrine made them for him.

He started off gack bikes but didnt do to well and i think this is what caused him to close up shop.

I am not even sure if kris welded his gack frames himself ... i think he outsourced them.

the rims are pergrine super pros.i have one full set but need 2 more rims.
the holes are oversized from stock so finding a set could be tricky.
i might mess about and lace them to some z rims as i can drill out the holes.

i could but many 48 hole rims are usualy butted they have the eyelets in the holes.  :-[

Brilliant! So, has anyone got any pics of Phil riding?

YGT Mark - thanks for the info dude - it'll be interesting to find out when Gack left Hoffman. They were still making Gack High Roller Hubs, Rims and Wheelsets into 1998...then at the end of 98 they made the same stuff but without the GACK name on them.

Here are a pair of my High Rollers from late 97 - you can see the GACK name on the rim and hub:

Then this is a hub from late 98, same design just with the GACK name removed:

I just asked a few mates about Phil. One of them was mates with him, and has pictures of him changing his kids nappy in a VW bus outside Nottingham wheels park sometime in the 90s. Unless his bike was in the background of the shot, I dont expect you want to see them! ha ha

Nice one...do they remember the bike? Or just the poo?  :daumenhoch:

just watch.

by hook or by crook we will find this phil evans.

i just hope its me who does it, cos by the time i do, this thread will be 40 pages long, have pictures of stodgy's gleaming restoration, and phil evans will be forced to re examine his life after he realises he has been under silent scrutiny for the last 6 months.....

Phil - it's no worry, the guy who sold me the frame is still in touch with him...it'll be nice to get some pics of him on the bike when it was fresh and minty...I'm sure we will! Roll on page 40 - can't wait until this one is finished!

mark this kris gack i take it he carried on making or modifying products into the later 1990s
like the peregrines as ive a couple of sets of the phat jack 10/14 slotted vershions with big bearings
and much fatter spokes, they are that big they dont fit any other peregrine rim.so did
they /he get them specialy made or would you think peregrine made them for him.

Are these the ones you got off me at Xmas Epic? I should be able to find the history on them if they are as they came from a kid round my way.

Little Update...

After some intensive investigation by lord Fuzzy of the Nod and myself (mainly Mark to be fair!), we can conclude that this is indeed a 1993 Ramp Room Condor with the revised thicker drop-outs, pegbosses and headangle. The changes were annouced in late 1992 and marketed as the 93 Model.

Nope, doesn't look like it. We need to do final measurements, but I believe it was only the SE built ones with the lazy headtube.

Good thing is, the forks I got from Billy are the correct ones but with the newer sticker design from late 1993.

So the frame and forks are a correct set now!
