i had a "puch arrow"
it was kinda like a shopper
i took off all the mudguards n stuff. it was a wheelie machine
prior to that i rode a falcon with solid tyres and rod brakes.
-
Grifter, very nearly went the racer route though.
-
Raleigh boxer, sprayed gold, that thing took so much abuse from an 8 year old it was unreal, then BMX came along and i very nearly strayed into the strange world of track bikes, oooh Canadian bends :D
-
mine was a green raleigh racer
after a while the bars where turned for super wheelies
but i was young and the big older lads could go forever
and they pulled the birds just with that ???
-
Grifter all the way. I was into BMX before I knew what BMX was. :LolLolLolLol:

Grifter. We used to straighten the forks, and then spray the frame red , the forks black, put a double gooseneck on it and put a Motocross FOX stiker on the top tube. Anyone else do that or was it just a Blackpool thing? :D

I had an old seconhand Grifter with a bent steerer tube. Brilliant fun untill you turned a tight corner and the forks locked up. I also had the optional slipping gear between 2nd and 3rd. ;)
-
I was into bmx before i could even ride without stabilisers  I had a Raleigh Husky and after watching what i now know was bmx beat i'd go and try out stunts on it! It was great due to the stabilisers it never fell over whilst i stood all over it ;D
I then had shopper style bikes as i wasnt allowed a bmx >:( : a Raleigh Fourteen , a green one, a brown one and FINALLY when i was about 13 i got my California Star bmx :)
Oh i also used to have a Pavemaster , which is what Andy Ruffell used to have to , as it says in his book ;)

The Budgie was a total wheelie machine, crap for the jumps we used to make out of milk crates though!

After the Grifter I got a £69 BMX from a company called Tensor (I think). They used to advertise in the Exchange and Mart. Wasn't the best bike but still remember getting it out of the box and building it. :)
It had cotter pin cranks on it, used to ride round with a spanner and couple of spares in case they sheared off.
-
what was your bike before the bmx hit town.
did it have cow horn bars :LolLolLolLol: wheelie monsters
and best trick possibly no handers :)
Yes :LolLolLolLol:
But was a skater so never rode the bike much :LolLolLolLol:

raleigh olympus with the bars spun upwards so you pushed on the brake levers to stop
wheelied good tho ;D
then put cowhorns on it!
got given a schwinn stingray(didnt know it was a stingray until i saw joe kid)which i learnt to bunnyhop on
then bought a burner off my sisters catalogue that she ran ;D
-
A Hawk rascal with pedal back, then a tomahawk, raleigh striker then a grifter and various other crap that i dont even want to remember! :-[
-
I had various old full size bikes done up including womens frames all with cowhorn handlebars and shorty mudguards tried to make em look like Scramble bikes (MOTO X) rode em up the woods broke lots of parts including cranks n spindles, pedals, frames all from landing from jumps the frames used to fold up especially the womens with no top tube! But they were better when the cranks broke( no tube to hit your knackers on).
We used to race on mostly downhill tracks and called it tracking.
Seems a long time ago now!
Probably cause it was! :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

Thinking back
i had a chipper then a chopper both yellow
a raleigh jeep with cow horns and knobbly tyres
and then bmx arrived so i got a piranha instead :D
that is spooky kev. my first bike was a chipper, then a chopper. then my first bmx was a piranha.
after that a skyway, then a falcon racer (don't ask!), then another skyway, then a mountain bike, then a dyno, then another skyway, then a proper, then a haro...
-
i had a racer with the handle bars pulled up for wheelies
it was white apart from that ? fook knows
-
My ol' man would get "gimick" bikes like the grifters, tomahawks etc
So I had a rebuilt hand painted white balloon tyred piece of sh*te as a 1st bike, then a raleigh Spider (a 3 speed yellow junior version of a modern day urban bike), then a 10 speed BSA racer (can't remeber what it was, but yellow again), then bmx!!
Login my younger brother had the BSA Bullit, little 5 speed royal blue racer if I remeber correctly!!
-
My first bike I remember was a budgie, Then a commando. on to a grifter which I covered in mirrors air horns a whip ariel and indicators. It was as heavy as hell but thought I was a mod so kept it that way till I saw a puch murray in halfords with lester mags on it.
I got that for christmass and over the next few years had every BMX I could get my hands on.
Best days of my life!!! Still see a lot of mates from bitd and they all think the same as me (14 years of age in a 39 year olds body) .
-
chipper for me i learned to ride on that thing, iremember my mum and dad saying right lets get you a bike then , they drove me to an alleyway were a guy was floggin second hand bikes (this is my memory of it anyway i must have been about five) and got a blue chiper i can remember my dad pushing me along then letting go that moment of axhilaration theres nothing like it , it was like flying , later i removed the backrest and put it on my supertuff for no handed wheelies

-
reading this thread makes me realise how much of a monopoly raleigh had on the Uk bile scene. no wonder they were crap. no competition to make decent bikes...
I staretd with a chipper then a chopper. i even put indicators on my chopper :-[ oh dear oh dear.. the went to a tuff burner, ammaco 202 frame with yellow tuffs ( sprayed white) then a CC prolite with blue acorns. Gave that to a mate, then got a Gt performer in the dying years. Did without from 1989 until 1999 when i bought a we the people.
Last year built up a old school haro sport, but also bought a S&M stricker frame. new schooler. best bike Ive ever ridden.
nothing beats the feeling of being back on a BMX at 35.. absolutely love it.. :4_17_5:
