Well, took me a while, but here are some scans. Apologies for the grainy quality, but I was using pretty basic kit and photographing at a distance in poor light. After some cropping & tweaking, they're OK I guess...
By the way, what was the year for this. '92?

Not sure how I managed to get this one of DMC, can't recall blagging my way onto the platform.

When else did this pair duke it out in a competition?

One of the things I remember from that day was, at the end, when all the US Pros had gone, I saw Zack Shaw leaving the building. He was riding an old Performer with Araya aeros and sealed hubs. He set off into London, cycling, and had 4 extra aeros hooked over his handlebars (some without spindles). I asked him what they were. He said "Spares!".
I also remember that just about everyone killed themselves in the vert comp. Apart from Tabron cos didnt ride cos his bike got nicked.

check out the blue condor, and mirra in a early hoffman t shirt

That's good to hear, I've stood shooting the breeze with him a couple of times now and he's a solid guy. Doubt he'd remember, but I was at Hastings when he broke the crank arm on his brand new Hooligan. We chatted about his slam at the Tizer Worlds, and he said the same guy who owned Mongoose owned Cadbury's as well. Nice bit o' trivia.
At Spitalfields he was warming up before being called for his run, I asked if I could get a few shots, he said, "Be my guest." It was like a private photoshoot! Shame the pics came out so badly (Gaaaaaahhh!). Say hi for me, he's still the coolest rider I've met at a comp. Some of the guys are a bit preoccupied and busy, and a bit pestered by folks wanting to meet their idols, I can understand that; but Dennis seems to treat people like he already knows them and will chat for a few minutes if he gets the chance.
Thanks for the imput from all, I remember a 'lockdown' as a bike was nicked, didn't know it was Simon's.
And who was it that fell backwards onto the flat after hanging up? Nightmare. I remember the sound of the impact and the audience's gasp, but that's all.
-
I think it was Bestwick who hung his back wheel from a 540 or 900, backwards, on the way back in. I thought he had broken his neck! Matt messed up his shoulder real bad (again) and just about everyone crawled away from the vert comp.
I also remember that it was the first time most people had seen a backflip on street and it was all they wanted to see. Riders were doing really good stuff but all anyone gave any credit to was Hoffman and DMC going upside down. Understandable, I guess, but a bit hard on riders who were doing good stuff to a silent crowd.
-
AMAZING!
My jaw is firmly on the floor now along with the goo.
Hoffman. Blue & Green Condor. 1992. It's a Stodgy wet dream.
Going to clean myself up now.
-
Stodgy,
Thats the contest where my mate complained to Hoffman that the peg mounts on his forks were out of line with each other.
"I told Matt that it wasn't a very good job when we met him at Spittlefields for the rider cup as mine were set up pissed so one peg was pointing slightly forward & one slightly back. His suggestion? "hit them with a hammer & straighten them dude"."
-
I remember Alex, fecking excellent solution, eh?
We were watching some video coverage from Spitafields last year with Jerry, can't remember whose it was, but it was rad as fook.

Forget using your webhost and get a photobucket account! Great pics!!! I never knew about this meet as I was out of BMX by then. I did used to live bang opposite there a few years after though. It would have been great if they'd still had the ramps there when we did last years CIN ride as the pub we all met up at was just across the road.
Would love to see more pics please ;)

Just came back in for another look. :smitten:
More please.

I'll try and scan a few more tonight if I get some time.
In the archives there are also a few taken during a couple of Hastings comps, might post them at a later date under a different heading.
Watch this space...
EDIT:
No time last night. Definitely soon(ish).

Top pics and some great background info, more please :daumenhoch:

Well, my webhost is gonna get sacked as barely 2MB's no good to man nor beast.
These are from a newly-opened Photobucket account (thanks for the recommendation).
This is probably just before the skater runts let on they'd added a little something to the water.

OK TRIVIA KINGS
who is the guy in the turquoise polo shirt interviewing DMC??
I won't spoil it (having nearly placed a comment below the pic when I was uploading them), but he was a really nice bloke. Quite a bit more than just an interviewer, he was directing the cameraman around the place. Didn't seem to be anyone else with him, reckon it was a small operation with him in sole charge.
Never have known his real name. Anyone got any info?
-
Was it Mr. Bennett?
-
How fu**ing sad are we?! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Was anyone at the KOC where Kriss Akabusi was covering the "highest air" attempt that Mirra was doing? Mirra had to pump up his tyres and broke the pump. It all looked quite funny when it was on record breakers, edited together with Kriss Akabusi laughing at everything.
-
that turn down is well tweaked !
i remember the pump destruction , haha :)
-
colin bennett wasn't it.. the programmes he had on with this rider cup stuff on also once introduced rollerblading to the uk. hilarious. 1 guy 2 girls all in lycra, massive wheeled rollerblades doing basically icedancing. it should have stayed that way! no idea what the programme was called though..
the other great bmx tv moment was "you bet" when carlo hit balls off height markers.. he did it in something like 20 seconds in practice so was told to "milk it" for tv. haha
-
Didnt Carlo do the same trick for some Euro version of You Bet, but they wanted it even more over the top and he had to pretend to have a hart attack between runs?
-
Rider cup was a land mark for me. Great comp, great people riding the London Streets and riding up the stairs in Liverpool St station was great too.
Small community at that time in BMX in fact Ive just spotted myself in the back ground there.
The street backflip still flushes me.I remember the bike being stolen we heard it was a certain someone not many miles away from here and sure enough they turned up on a machine VERYY simular wasn`t welcome round here again.
FIL
-
Just remebered My mate Jex entered the street contest amatuer and pulled a fakie peg stall on 1 of the buildings stantions off one of the fly offs.. Tried again in his second run landed so hard he shattered his back wheel.

The stolen bike was Tabrons condor, right? It wasnt Fuzzynod or Stodgy was it?
-
i think i saw roger atkins in the back of one of the photos
now there was a bmx dad
once cheered mark so loud he ruptured his vocal cords, 6 months to heal
always pissed in leisure centre bars
what a legend!
-
My dad took me to see the Rider Cup in 92 and it was proper brilliant.
I wasnt into bmx at all and my dad heard it advertised on the radio and took me and a friend up there for the day to watch, he didnt even tell me where we were going!
Once it was over I wanted a decent bmx bike and thats where it all started.
I still remember that day really clearly, even though I was only 13!
I bought a copy on video which I still have and watch from time to time, in my opinion the vert contest was the best i've ever seen even though I didnt realise at the time.
Was loads of good riders there, Hoffman, Mirra, Tabron, Galley, Beswick, DMC, Gouin, etc, etc.
Even friends of mine now Mike Mullen and Dennis Wingham are in the vid Riding vert!
Cheers
Paul
-
Jesus Paul, so I met you in 95. You were 15-16?
Blimey...... Now I really do feel old...... :D
For the rest of you trivia freaks, the actual Spitalfields skatepark was co-owned by Andy Peerless, who I hooked up with after he's lost that gig (stiched up by a business partner). We went on to build the infamous Upminster indoor vert ramp together and from that Fearless Ramps was spawned.

That was 93 one of the best ever KOC's, same year as the Standard Army invasion, treated to Krt Schmidt's awesome mini riding. I got some good pics at the Rider Cup but i'll be damned if i can find them >:( Did anyone use the money off coupon in Invert mag for their tickets? :-[
I just remembered Mirra got the highest air on a Big Daddy!! (at KOC 93)
-
If it was the "Standard" year, then it was the only year I ever entered KOC. I rode Mini, as did loads of friends. It was way rad and so much fun.
