That's right!
I had a meeting with the 4 owners of Skyway this week, and one of the topics was doing a retro 25th Anniversary Skyway T/A frame with modern geometry.
After a couple hours of discussion, plans were approved to go into the developmental stages of designing both a pro 20", and a pro Cruiser new school T/A frame!
This is great news! I'll keep everybody here posted as we start designing prototypes!
Now, please keep this in mind..... at this point we are collecting data on making the new frames. No production date, or pricing have been discussed yet, and there is a possibility that we can hit some snags that delay this from happening, but... the important thing right now is that this is what is being planned!
here are some pics from my visit....

We pretty much sold out at this time, but email me if you are interested. We might be able to pick up a few more right now, but I'm sure we'll do another jersey to go with the frames.

I could be wrong, but that photo in Ken`s office is from the 1983 European Tour, and I think there`s me, Chris Young, Dean Scott-web, Jason Maloney, Bob Medrano and Andy Patterson in there, not in that order though, and possibly Dean Ellison who was the President of Skyway at the time standing up, or that could be Andy Patterson :crazy2:
-
one of those could look nice with my burner :2funny: ;D

oh gawd this repo band wagon is really gathering pace..

Ken has a ton of cool old pics in the office. Even has a pic on the wall with himself, Scotty Freeman, Hugo Gonzales, Robert Peterson, and some other guys with Benny Hill!!!
Classic!
-
cant wait, i think i know also which is my 2008 or 2009 race bike!! :) :)
-
Well thats me on the far left then it looks like Dean Scott-Web, then Bob Medrano, then it could be Ken standing up, then Chris Young with the blue visor on his crash helmet, then Jason Maloney on the Diamond Back, and Andy Patterson at the end :daumenhoch:

I bet it was like charlie and the chocolate factory going in there.....I'd get a bit giddy :LolLolLolLol:

What about getting one, removing the stickers and painting it white, then putting Black Dirt Bros stickers on it? It would be a modern/original dirt bros frame. How cool?

It would be nice to see Skyway back on the scene.
Their graphics and race jersey still look fresh after all these years. Classic.
-
tefore
The box in the bottom of the pic is a set of Skyway motorcycle googles that were made in the 70's.
Sweet, huh!
BY THE WAY........ the news about the retro T/A is only half the news!
The US guys don't know this yet, and this is the VERY first mention of it. I'll let the VintageBMX guys in on this too......
While I was at Skyway, I was able to get the keys for the back container to have a good long look for some relics. Remember the Streetbeat framesets that were un-earthed last year? Well... this is where they were kept for the last 20-something years.
I pulled out some goodies.... NOS Spinmasters, and some Tuff Pedals, and some other stuff . (The Spinmasters are now on coloredtuffs.com if anybody wants one!)
Well...... sitting in the containers was a great HUGE box of 1980's original T/A tubing. All cut and formed, just waiting for welding! No blemishes, no rust! PERFECT original True Temper tubing!
So.... during our meeting we discussed the future of the old stock of tubes. We brought up a few names of reputable welders, and one was contacted, AND he personally came in to get a tubeset to look at.
I'm not going to release his name until he agrees to the job, but... I will tell you that you ALL know his work!
So....... it looks like the Skyway 25th Anniversary bash starts off with 100% original Skyway T/A framesets, 100% Made In the USA! 50 are to be made, and we will try to get half of them chromed, while the other half will be white. If the 50 sell out fast, there is a possibility that more can be made, depending on how many tube sets are left, but 50 is the number right now.
Frames will probably be stamped "25th Anniversary" on the bottom bracket so there is no confusion on the release date of the frame.
Sales will be through www.coloredtuffs.com, and we are now starting a "waiting list" for these framesets.
To get on this list, please send you name and info to sales@coloredtuffs.com, and we'll notify you when they will be available. Cost is not determined as this time.
So..... Killer news!!
-Ed
-
Original frames is better...

i hope this is a definitely not probably.
-
Ed,
you got mail !!
:daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
-
quote.."Frames will probably be stamped "25th Anniversary"
Yeah... I think that it's necessary, and the Skyway guys agreed. We can't let any of these get out where they could get confused with an older frame. It will look identical, and there will be really no way to tell the difference.
The BB stamp is the way to go, with perhaps an additional "25th Anniversary" seat tube decal....
-
What about getting one, removing the stickers and painting it white, then putting Black Dirt Bros stickers on it? It would be a modern/original dirt bros frame. How cool?
There was a guy on Vintage a couple of years back who had one of the 'new school' Dirt Brothers frames with a TA sticker set on it which i thought was cool.
-
Great news.
I wonder if this anonymous welder is Rod Miles - http://www.vintagebmx.com/rodmiles.htm.
I think he is also into his Skyway's since I think he owns a 16", 20" and 24" from the pics I've seen on vbmx.com.
I don't expect confirmation of this. :D Just a guess/speculation. :)

Peen, i think you may have hit the nail on the head :daumenhoch: we will have to wait and see...

Well fingers crossed I'll be on the list to get one made out of the original tubing and one of the retro models. :daumenhoch:
-
Although Rod is freakin' awesome....... it's not him. Rod is an East Coast guy, and Skyway's list of hand-picked welders are West Coast guys.....
Greg Esser was also interested in the job, and was on my personal list....
I'll confirm the name when I get the official word.....

It'll be nice to see some of these re welded TA's make it to the UK. :daumenhoch:

I hope so.... :daumenhoch:

Yup! True!!

Yes, I will be handling all individual sales on this for Skyway, and will be able to ship them anywhere over there.

This is exciting. Ed, will there be any XL tube sets being welded up?
-
Bit confused how they will be allocating the 100 or so frames when there must be a few thousand wanting them, will it be done like a raffle or first 100 people to log on and pay on that website gets it. If so us in the UK will be loosing out big time as it may be in the middle of the night
-
Ed has said its the first people on the list.
Here's hoping !
-
Any news Ed? Haven't heard anything from you yet mate...
-
Yeah come on hurry up >:D
-
Hi guys!
Just to clarify- this news is for the ORIGINAL 25th Anniversary frameset, NOT the retro 20" and 24" frames that we are working on.
Today has been a busy day trying to catch up on emails and general business stuff. I have not sent any emails yet, and I need to leave in about 5 minutes to go up to the BMX track for tonight's vending session up there, so the emails will go out late tonight.
The 25th Anniversary original Skyway T/A frame and fork sets are going to be $500 US dollars (about 250 pounds) each, and should be welded up rather soon. Skyway will have a production schedule for me in about 10 days.
As far as the color- we are still up in the air on if chrome is possible. We need to find enough tubing sets that are polished already, and we really do not have a number on how many sets that is right now. Secondly, we are still looking around for chrome platers, and cost.
It does look like the majority of frames will be white, however.
These frames will be 100% old-school geometry, exactly like the ones made up originally, all using original T/A tubing that was cut and formed in the early 80's. 18.5" top tube lengths only. These are EXACTLY like the ones made back then.
I will be sending emails out to everybody that is on the waiting list. We are selling 100 framesets on a first come, first serve basis according to the order in which people were added to the waiting list. If someone on the list decides to pull out, then the next person on the list will be pushed up to fill that spot, until 100 sets are spoken for. We have about 180 people that have emailed to be on the list, and now we need to see who still wants to be on that list.
We will start taking deposits in about 2 weeks.
I'll post more details later.

For those that are interested.......
Thanks again for your interest in the "old-school" Skyway T/A 25th
Anniversary frame and fork set that we are working on.
We have a bit more work to do on the project before production begins, so
we are still not 100% sure on the color of the framesets. We know for
certain that we will be making white frames, and we are still exploring the
possibility of making a few chrome frames. Chrome frames require frame
tubing that has been pre-polished, and we still need to figure out how many
tube sets we have that is polished. Secondly, chrome plating has
skyrocketed in price, so we are anticipating that there might be an increase
in price for chrome framesets.
Pricing for the 25th Anniversary Skyway T/A frame and fork sets will be
$499.99, and will be limited to a run of 100 sets globally.
UPS Ground shipping to areas in the USA will be $15.00. Shipping to Canada
and Alaska will be $30.00. USPS Global Express service to all other parts
of the world (England, Australia, Germany, etc) will be $58.00.
The frame and fork sets will use 100% True Temper 4130 Cr-Mo tubing, ALL
formed and cut in the early 80's during Skyway initial production run, and
will feature the original racing geometry with it's 18.5" top tube. 100%
American made.
We will be taking deposits for the frame and fork sets in about 2 weeks.
We can accept payment through Paypal, Visa, Mastercard, or by money order.
At this time we need to find out who is certain about purchasing this
frameset, so we are asking that you kindly reply to this email to keep you
on our list. If you have decided not to remain on the list, please let us
know so that we can fill all 100 spots on our list.
I look forward to your reply! Thanks again for your interest in this
beautiful, legendary BMX frameset, AND for your part in re-introducing
Skyway back into the BMX scene!

Hey guys!
Things have been crazy busy here. Early mornings and late nights! Being a one man operation is taking ALL of my time now..... but I love my job, so that's the way it is....
OK.... we finally had a slight breakthrough with the Original Skyway T/A frame and fork project. I've been put on hold the last 6 months due to Skyway's overwhelming busy production timelines, so I've been just waiting to get word on who they have found to weld these puppies up.
Well, they still have not figured things out, mainly due to the fact that they are making so much non-BMX stuff, and their work day just doesn't have enough time..... so, the "ball" has been placed back in my end of the court!
I got Skyway's blessing to have the tubing sent to my first choice in welder's- Mr Greg Esser, here in good 'ol Florida, USA. In the 70's, Greg's family founded the NBL (National Bicycle League) and brought BMX here to the East Coast of the USA. Greg's dad started MCS Bicycles, and Greg was one of MCS's main welder's for decades. Greg also was one of Skyway's earliest factory riders, and is considered to be one the East Coast's best racers back in the day, earning the very first NBL Number One Pro title.
Greg was inducted into the ABA Hall Of Fame recently, and I'm honored to call him a friend.
Greg recently suffered a heart attack a few weeks ago, and is recovering VERY well after having a triple bypass surgery. He's eager to get back into the shop and start building things again!
We talked today about having him weld 150 skyway T/a framesets, and he's very interested in doing it. If anybody can do an absolutely beautiful job making a classic BMX frame and forkset, it's Greg Esser!
A tubing set, and a completed TA frameset (to make a new jig from) is on the way to him so he can look at it and see if he wants to take on the job.
I've got a good feeling that this will work out just fine!
Once we've finished this, we'll start working on the Retro's. But this project needs to be first on the list!
That's the very latest......!
Cheers!
-Ed Ferri

nice one Ed, keep us updated :daumenhoch:

Looking forward to them Ed....looking forward to mine !! :daumenhoch:

Phew, I thought it had been forgotten about or they'd all been sold already. ;D

Wow... a T/A put together by the legend that is Greg Esser...how cool is that :smitten:
You lucky barstewards... ;D
-
SKYWAY T/A framesets......
OK... we are moving on this finally! Greg Esser is working on welding the first T/A tubeset. Once it's done it will go to the powder coaters, THEN go to Skyway for QC. Once it passes all QC inspections, we'll begin production on the framesets 50 at a time. 3 production runs of 50 framesets each run.
We'll begin the process soon of going through the email list that we've compiled over the last few months and check with everybody to see who wants a frameset.
More details will follow soon!

mcs frames were built to perfection, will be cooool frames :daumenhoch:

After 8 pages it's all a bit confusing :buck2:
Are these the frames made out of the original tubing and with old school geometry; or
A retro project (like the Azusa JMCs), so new tubing, new school geometry, but look like an original TA?
-
Old Geometry with old tubing. 150 being made.
New Retro F&F are coming out later. :daumenhoch:

Thanks for clearing that up.
