i need pics if possible on what different models to look out for
90s only please mr leech you are the man with the mag scans.
-
Hold on to ya hat Dan - the S&MAlex scan machine will be firing up!!!
-
i feel i need one .you no the score ,but must get the right one as so many where about.
-
i've got an unfinished rare challenger for sale!
the holmes would be my first choice though,
just dont be tempted with a "next gen" model! i had one for three years that nearly broke my back it was so heavy, like 8.9lbs heavy!
pretty though, looking back, it must have been one of the first raw jobs in the uk,
i'd pay good money for another set of the holmes stickers with the chickens on, want to sell me a couple of yours alex?!!

-
ye i dont want the wrong one.
do it right the first time, when its something i no nothing about.
thats why i want pointers ,pics, good and bad points ,then i can decide my choice.
-
i know you all have seen this ::) its all abit gay ;)

my old classic dirtbike from around 1996, fairly short toptube by todays standards,
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/g171/jarvicseven/6923b2c2.jpg)
my favourite ride of all time, s&m RV race version "21 toptube, 74.5 headtube angle, "14/"15 rear triangle, classic geometry, 5.3lbs frame

I missed a page of the 96 scan, and now I cant find it!!!
-
god its like having homework :LolLolLolLol:
i need to read and dig.
-
Dan, Im guessing that if you are talking early 90s / mid, then you are thinking 1". If thats the case then there are only 6 20" frames to look into (if you dont count the platform dirtbike as its own frame). If you find a mad dog or a menstural cycle then you MUST sell it to me, so thats down to 4. No one seems to like the HAF (I got one for £15 and one for £10 in the last year) so its Holmes, a dirtbike or a challenger.
See, its getting easier all ready.
-
holmes :daumenhoch:
dirtbike :daumenhoch:
challenger :daumenhoch:
from the later mid school frames aswell
i'll be honest though, i only ever rode my classic army green dirtbike a handful of times, it really was far too short,
the warpig is too heavy and too short
so's the sabbath
the chris bennett is an option but its not even remotely mid,
watch out for the headtube angles on the early holmes and dirtbike frames too i'm almost positive they were 74degree choppers!
-
1" holmes is in the lead at the moment.
-
Ive got a 2 1" dirtbikes that might be avalable. They are both 990 ones but one (chrome one) is quite early cos the drop outs are 2 thin ones stuck together.
-
just been offered a 1" holmes .
-
"1 holmes :4_17_5: not easy to find these days!
the current model light as fook frame has more similarities to the original holmes frame then the heavy as fook(imho)
i've always wanted to find a mint 1.18th holmes frame and trick it out with all the latest bits, kind of like a tuned retro hotrod!
sorry couldnt resist, any offers for the pair?
-
are you building that up ,looks trick.
im not sure of the condition of the holmes
but i wouldnt mind building up a bad boy ride
i got a few bits laying about .these rekka hubs
i got wouldnt fit without destroying the slots.
-
The HAF was dirtbike geometry but thicker tubes, bigger drop outs and a platform. The Holmes was always way nice, just the back end was long so not that good for mini / street. The LAF rules!!!
Dan, who has offered you a 1" Holmes? Pictures?
-
happy me. have not a pic yet.
-
i'm considering flogging them both on as i've at last found an eastern ti grim reaper for the next sub 20lb build,
the laf in the pic is as low as i can get it without sacrificing strength at 23lbs
are the rekka hubs 14mm? it wouldnt be un-mid school (is that even a word?) to grind them out, i did my old next gen back in the day,
if you really like the "1 holmes go with it,
if you get stuck for a rear 10mm 48 hub give us a shout!
-
the rekkas are 16mm :-[ quite large things
-
You cant really widen the slots on early S&Ms unless you take it all out from the top, and then the angles get changed. I used to just grind a nick out of the spindles so they would fit in. But mine were only 12mm (first oversized hubs?).
-
the grinder will need to come out
(http://)(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/d87/harris15570/danswheels1.jpg)
i think they will need to wait for a different build then.
-
are the axles big enough! yosh!
keep them for a later mid build, keep your eye out for a solid killing mahine or an fbm angel of death!
nice wheels there though dude,
-
dont grind those rekka axles dan they are 16 mm of radness :)
-
no worries ,im not grinding the axles.
they will go on something oneday
maybe stodgy can grind out his hoff frame ;)
or kill me with a big stick first :)
-
The big stick is waving dan...
;)
-
stodgy an update is in order mate any ground made in the dropout rebuild

-
Heres one for ya Alex, I've never seen this (or noticed maybe) differences of the seatstays on different Holmes models....
The Holmes i know and love....
.....and this one with whacky stays....
....you've probably got one! Can you shed any light on this?....
-
thin rear stays, no 990 mounts (and some other small things too) = mk1
curved "team murry" rear stays = mk2
fatter rear stays (in mk1 style) and usually with 990 mounts = mk3
Actually, Ive got a mk2 f+f for sale. I might give it a new coat of paint first tho.
-
That's that cleared up then! I'd never seen those curved stays before, thanks Ask Alex!
-
the black and white photo is moeller holding my custom toptube frame :LolLolLolLol: i could do with it!
so, just to get it straight in my head what i'm searching for, what would the first 1\18th a-head holmes frames be called?
oversized?
btw, is it me or are those s&m pads an absolute nightmare to get hold of? i've been combing usa e-bay for over a sodding year!
-
me to joe ,i need one but ive just about given up :'(
-
me to joe ,i need one but ive just about given up :'(
they cant have made that many 1/18th holmes frames as they dumped the holmes and starting building the "classic dirtbike xl"
they should have kept the old "holmes" name, i personally think thats what the "light as fook" should have been as it bore more in common with the holmes than the "heavy as fook"
there talk of s&m reproducing some of the old decal sets, has anyone else heard this?
-
yes ive heard the same ,i need a set of holmes 1" but might take a while.
-
Posted these up a while ago on the 'other' site but here's how to tell the difference between a mk1 Holmes and a mk3:
Early headtube has thin pressed and welded strengthening rings; later version has a thicker machined headtube.
Older S&M frames (and the very first Homeless) have a flat plate bridge behind the BB shell and up at the brake mount. No AD lugs either. Later braces are tubular.
Rear seat post junction is different as the early models had thinner tubing and normally cracked there, whereas the later ones had a mitred joint which is much stronger. You can see the cracked chrome on the right stay; thankfully after I had the chrome stripped the tube was okay.
Hope that helps someone?
