whats the secret to learning ariels?
i have the technique down. under the coping i am fine. on the big 12 foot vert ramp i can almost reach the coping, and on a small ramp, if i push myself i can just about break free of the coping by an inch or so.
how do i break the fear barrier and get out the top?
i am not thinking i'll be able to reach carlo-height, but a couple of feet would be nice.
if anyone has any tips, i'd be grateful. i see others doing it with ease.
in the past i have wiped out a few times clipping my back wheel on the coping. it knocks me straight off.
-
same as above :'(.
-
if you can do them under you can do them over the coping, just need a bit more bottle & speed, practice ;D
-
you can show us on the 29th mate ;).
-
dont think weston is comin, he has a gig.????
-
I found having a bit of ply behind the coping takes away the fear factor as instead of hookin up you just bounce of the ply. But because you know the ply is there you dont even come close to touching it. I re learn't airs this way at the Chalton ramp.
-
or do one more pedal that helps you get air lol
and that was my fear hanging up
after seeing gordy hang up entire wheel after a 6 or 7 ft air and rode out helped me loads lol
-
Its just all in the head , just go for it or you'll never do it , Don,t worry about hitting the coping a bit , its nowt , iv'e hung the front and still rode out , just do it..... :)
OOPS , didn,t read your post proper , coping knocks you off , I think when you are learning to get out the top you try and do something different to your normal technique as you panic a bit ,i think its just about keeping your nerve . But its a case of practice alot , it will come, along with a few falls ;D
And when you get out there its the best feeling.......
-
just pull up as your front wheel hits the coping and as long as you pull out enough you wont hang however.. on ver do NOT pull out at all it will end up as a bad accident
-
yeah verts wierd u push in for it scary
-
More speed.......................... keep your fingers away from the brakes as you approach............................and hope for the best ;)
-

Thats even harder to do ;)
-
Bill can teach you his straight drop in on vert!!!!!!!!!!! bloody scary that is!
-
sounds it. i cant wait to see some of the lads on the half pipe 8).
-
Yep ,dropping in is the hardest thing to learn , scares the crap out of me .......
-
do an air at the height you feel comfortable with, then slowly increase the height one stage at a time. eventually the next stage will become the norm and then you go to the next stage.
oh.... and if your on vert don't pull out.( It's easier to pull out if your going to hook up than it is to push back in if your heading for the flat bottom
too many stages
-
riding in is so much easier than droping in.
-
Jay....Are you going to bones??
-
Na , working sean by the looks of it , god damn it .............
-
riding into wot graeme? the 12 ft halfpipe or the mini?
-
the vert ramp
and i wasnt serious. i think i'd just black out if i rode over the edge of that!!!
people just make it look effortless though.
i'm ok riding into the mini ramp. although the first few times i eventually plucked up the courage to do that i wiped out hard.
-
its very short that vert theres not a lot of tim to get your feet on the pedals.especially when your shaking. i reckon the bowl must be mastered first.
-
need a vert resi to practice on!!!
-
resi?
-
one of them rubber vert ramps!!
-
or one of them foam sumo wrestler suits.
-
do what I do, watch those that can do it whilst sitting on yer bike looking cool then simply walk away, completely unscathed.
-
hehe
we'll need the sumo suits for the half pipe sidehack action
and riding into the bowl, with hack
-
And the half pipe jousting
-
and the ghost ride the jumpbox comp using only show n shine bikes
-
another good way to learn is on a mini ramp or quarter that doesnt have any vert on it like a 5ft one, as to air these you have to pull out back into the ramp as to miss the coping, if you do hang it doesnt matter because the angle down isnt as steep
you see all the younguns getting like 5-6 ft of air on these, this'll give ya a bit of confidence of airing over the coping
another thing that;ll help is to ride ya bike everywhere! riding home from the pub pissed helps with balance! the more natural you feel riding a bike, then the easier all these things become, you'll look less like a sketchy old git holding onto the bars for ya life ;D
-
So let me get this right...............You have to get pissed to look good on yer bike leaving the pub????
Think about that Rich........................................A thirty plus overweight pissed bloke riding a BMX away from his local!!!!!!!!!!! That has to be one of the funniest sites in the world ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Feck it, i'll try anything to get more air!!
-
when i was was on the five foot last week i hung my back tyre up coming out of the ramp for the first time. free adreniline rush anyone.......
i was thinking that i suppose the only way is pads helmets balls and stupidity.
-
the odd thing is, after a 15yr lay off i can get on a bike, still do roll backs,360's,nose wheelies, 540 kick turns & about 3-4ft of air off the pipe but i cannot jump the jump box anymore, everytime i hit it i just lose control in the air & faceplant...
-
lol i remember that one phil lol.
-
Man these airs are a mystery :-\ i used to be able to get six foot from an 8ft pipe now i really struggle to even get outĀ :'( my first week back on my bike i was getting one to two feet out then a nice three footer came down missed the pipe all together and fecked my knee up proper style :'(
I,ve been struggling to get out of any pipe now ??? but my thoughts on it is dont think of it as a turning ramp its a ramp to propel yourself upwards then when yer falling think about landing it back on the ramp !
Here's me airing a four foot spine ;D which is not very easy as its bloody fast

-
thats a great pic!
here's a rare moment for me getting "air" at the bowls at yate a few years back
(http://www.30cms.partygirls.org/yate/ruler2_s.JPG)
-
I think the ramp has a lot to do with it. Some are much easier to air on than others.
My fav ramp is the 8 foot 1/4 pipe at Skaterham. Its just the right size for me, and has a nice feel to it, and 3-4 foot airs are easy to pull. Unfortunately, they put a bloody great jump box in front of it, which im useless at, so its kinda spoilt it a bit for me.
The 11 foot half pipe they have i seem to have a bit of a mental block on. Im lucky if i can get 2 or 3 inches out of it. I know i can do it, but something just holds me back. fear of breaking myself in bits i guess ! 8)
The small 6 footer at Rom is another fun ramp. Air is practically compulsory on it. You dont need any speed at all to get out.

-
One good thing about any Aerials is that you are gauranteed to land everytime.....
-
Nice pic Alex, thats nice air and style your getting there ;)
-
thats the kind of air i am aiming for.
that would do me!!!
i have picked up some good tips on this thread thanks guys
now its just down to me. death or glory.
-
thanks guys some good tips here
i will get some coaching on the 29th from you bill on the vert ramp
riding into it will be next . . . .
Ride a 8ft ramp for a while before you go to a big 13ft ramp....
-
as rich says ride everywhere as it helps with your balance and how well you know your bike . best ramp i rode for airs was rampwork`s as it was 7 ft and only just vert .
i don`t ride enough these days so back down the bottom now .
-
i think that could be my problem. i only ride once a week.and thats at bones on a tuesday.im feeling more confident though to try more stuff as the weeks go.
you never know i might get a inch or two of air this week lol.
-
It's hard to describe the feeling. I know it feels great but.
Me bitd

-
cool pic.can you still do em ?.
-
I can but only 1 -2 feet. I used to do 5-8 foot depending on the ramp or pipe. I'm practiciing a bit more lately. Not bad for 40 years old next month! :P
-
not to bad at all ;).
-
dordy, let me know when your at bones next (apart from sat). hopefully i'll have built this contraption & i should be riding again...
