Title: learning ariels
Post by: theRuler on October 20, 2005, 04:12 PM
whats the secret to learning ariels?

i have the technique down. under the coping i am fine. on the big 12 foot vert ramp i can almost reach the coping, and on a small ramp, if i push myself i can just about break free of the coping by an inch or so.

how do i break the fear barrier and get out the top?

i am not thinking i'll be able to reach carlo-height, but a couple of feet would be nice.

if anyone has any tips, i'd be grateful. i see others doing it with ease.
in the past i have wiped out a few times clipping my back wheel on the coping. it knocks me straight off.

if you can do them under you can do them over the coping, just need a bit more bottle & speed, practice ;D

I found having a bit of ply behind the coping takes away the fear factor as instead of hookin up you just bounce of the ply.  But because you know the ply is there you dont even come close to touching it.  I re learn't airs this way at the Chalton ramp.

or do one more pedal that helps you get air lol
and that was my fear hanging up
after seeing gordy hang up entire wheel after a 6 or 7 ft air and rode out helped me loads lol

Its just all in the head , just go for it or you'll never do it , Don,t worry about hitting the coping a bit , its nowt , iv'e hung the front and still rode out , just do it..... :)

OOPS , didn,t read your post proper , coping knocks you off , I think when you are learning to get out the top you try and do something different to your normal technique as you panic a bit ,i think its just about keeping your nerve . But its a case of practice alot , it will come, along with a few falls   ;D

And when you get out there its the best feeling.......

just pull up as your front wheel hits the coping and as long as you pull out enough you wont hang however.. on ver do NOT pull out at all it will end up as a bad accident

do an air at the height you feel comfortable with, then slowly increase the height one stage at a time. eventually the next stage will become the norm and then you go to the next stage.
oh.... and if your on vert don't pull out.( It's easier to pull out if your going to hook up than it is to push back in if your heading for the flat bottom

too many stages

Title: Re: learning ariels
Post by: theRuler on October 21, 2005, 09:05 AM
the vert ramp
and i wasnt serious. i think i'd just black out if i rode over the edge of that!!!

people just make it look effortless though.

i'm ok riding into the mini ramp. although the first few times i eventually plucked up the courage to do that i wiped out hard.

its very short that vert theres not a lot of tim to get your feet on the pedals.especially when your shaking. i reckon the bowl must be mastered first.

another good way to learn is on a mini ramp or quarter that doesnt have any vert on it like a 5ft one, as to air these you have to pull out back into the ramp as to miss the coping, if you do hang it doesnt matter because the angle down isnt as steep

you see all the younguns getting like 5-6 ft of air on these, this'll give ya a bit of confidence of airing over the coping

another thing that;ll help is to ride ya bike everywhere! riding home from the pub pissed helps with balance! the more natural you feel riding a bike, then the easier all these things become, you'll look less like a sketchy old git holding onto the bars for ya life ;D

Post by: RADHAB on October 21, 2005, 01:13 PM
So let me get this right...............You have to get pissed to look good on yer bike leaving the pub????

Think about that Rich........................................A thirty plus overweight pissed bloke riding a BMX away from his local!!!!!!!!!!! That has to be one of the funniest sites in the world ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Feck it, i'll try anything to get more air!!

when i was was on the five foot last week i hung my back tyre up coming out of the ramp for the first time. free adreniline rush anyone.......

i was thinking that i suppose the only way is pads helmets balls and stupidity.
Title: Re: learning ariels
Post by: weston on October 21, 2005, 04:23 PM
the odd thing is, after a 15yr lay off i can get on a bike, still do roll backs,360's,nose wheelies, 540 kick turns & about 3-4ft of air off the pipe but i cannot jump the jump box anymore, everytime i hit it i just lose control in the air & faceplant...

Man these airs are a mystery :-\ i used to be able to get six foot from an 8ft pipe now i really struggle to even get outĀ  :'( my first week back on my bike i was getting one to two feet out then a nice three footer came down missed the pipe all together and fecked my knee up proper style :'(

I,ve been struggling to get out of any pipe now ??? but my thoughts on it is dont think of it as a turning ramp its a ramp to propel yourself upwards then when yer falling think about landing it back on the ramp !

Here's me airing a four foot spine ;D which is not very easy as its bloody fast

I think the ramp has a lot to do with it.   Some are much easier to air on than others.

My fav ramp is the 8 foot 1/4 pipe at Skaterham.  Its just the right size for me, and has a nice feel to it, and 3-4 foot airs are easy to pull. Unfortunately, they put a bloody great jump box in front of it, which im useless at, so its kinda spoilt it a bit for me.

The 11 foot half pipe they have i seem to have a bit of a mental block on.  Im lucky if i can get 2 or 3 inches out of it.  I know i can do it, but something just holds me back.  fear of breaking myself in bits i guess !   8)

The small 6 footer at Rom is another fun ramp.  Air is practically compulsory on it. You dont need any speed at all to get out.
