Not heard of Mason Smith???  surely not!

I was told he still rides alot.....does Corby every Thursday evening.

He used to ride at my local skate park in Stevenage, super smooth!!  he'd turn up on his Gen1 and everyone would just stop and watch him with mouths open at how smooth he was.......well mostly just at his bike as we ALL had Burners  :LolLolLolLol:

Im still trying to get round to scanning in the last bike Jam at Mons. I think Steve Grace got a pic from that, he was real good.
Martyn Tambling still rides and is still way rad, rides for Standard I think.

Here's my suggestion:
Derren Bailey! Amazing rider, minis, dirt jumps, all of it. He is still real good and has never had any kind of sponsor or even "flow" of parts. There is no justice! (Oh, dont tell him I said any of this!).

pickle i no masons been around a long time
and all the riders i listed where known but
i put them in the unsung list as they inspired so many
so maybe none belong in this thread.   :)
mason nearly ripped his thumb right of and had a while out but soon stepped up again.

I was with Mason when he broke his thumb, riding the mini in Oxford. Very nasty. After a not very bad looking crash he said he had hurt his thumb. He took his glove off and it was pointing totally the wrong way. Mason was so Tuff about it. Just put his stuff in the car and drove about an hour and a half home, and then went to his local A&E! I expect he ate a bag of nails as a snack on the way!

Same list as General Lee, plus Jerry Galley - he's a top riders rider, rode with the Sprocket Jockeys but never really hit mainstream like his peers did. He was regularily beating Bestwick, Tabron and the like.

O'Connell for sure! One of the most gifted 'technical' riders you'll ever see. I sold him my King Fork/Stem combo a few years ago i wonder  if he still has it? I'd like to buy it back!

Got to agree with Rob Ridge too although he never inspired me fashion wise!

As for Kevin Jones he's had 'God' status handed to him on a plate for years but never bothered with all that just happily tooling around that car park in York!

I always loved Mason's red Lengthy! (oo-er!)

Totally Derren, He used to show up at our local trails in Wallington, back in 95-96 or so.... He had the best bike ever... Green Big Daddy, Slams & Alu Peregrine rims...  I totally copied his bike.

In terms of Uk riders from the early mid school days, concidering the lack of coverage and footage gathered from this period then many are unsung heroes.
some of my favoorite from this time :

Lee Reynolds
Andy Brown
Aju BuBu
Phil dolan
James Mulby
Gerry Galley

In fact there were loads of gret riders from this time, but what seperate this period more noticably more than anything else was the ammount of individuality between each rider.

For got about Aju what a smooth rider and jolly nice chap too..

Maybe a selfish punt here but everyone who kept riding when BMX was as popular as herpies deserves a hand ....

Now,  I don't want to start a row or owt.......  but I see that Gerry Galley has appeared in a few peoples lists.

I could never call him an unsung hero.  He is just a hero full stop.  When I returned to riding his was the first British name I heard in the same sentence as all the pros of the day.  It was well recognised that he could ride any ramp, however bad, to the highest standard. I saw him regularly bring skateparks to a standstill  (riders and skaters), we would all watch with our jaws on the floor.

I dont know him well enough to know his life story, but I'll bet he was offered every sponsorship deal there was at the time. I'd bet he still gets offered stuff now.  I'm guessing he choose not to take those deals and stay true to himself. Something else that makes him a hero to me.

Anyone remember him riding the street comp at KOC one year and not jumping the box once?  Back in the days of so-called street comps which were no more that jumpbox comps.  No, Gerry went and did what he wanted to do, and stayed true.

I've said it before and I'll say it again;   Legend.  One of my all time favourite riders and an inspiration.  An unsung hero to me would be the rider that didn't get the recognition he deserves, and thats not true of Gerry.

In my opinion, of course   ;) ;D

Hear hear, TwoBobRob.

I thought this thread started as "Unsung" and it seemed to turn into "fav".

Gerry is def my Fav rider of the 90s (pos ever). I know of several companies that offered him things and he wouldnt take it. One clothing company kept sending him boxes of stuff. He'd think about it for a while and then just send it back, saying he wouldnt be able to do anything to justify it! I think the same box of clothes went back and forth a few times!

I met Jerry Galley at the smelly ramp last year and have to say Iat the time was not aware of his legendary status (not that it would have made any difference) and I have to say he is one of the nicest blokes I've met - there is nothing pretentious or arrogant about the man - he is exceptionally rad, friendly and funny (well he took the pee out of Pete Quad a lot and that's funny in my book  :LolLolLolLol:).  Here's a clip of him nearly hitting the roof at the smelly ramp  :daumenhoch:.

I also have to mention Zak Shaw, he is very rad too  :daumenhoch:.

Top man is Jerry (with a 'J'!), rad as fook and constantly a pleasure to be with and ride with - I was so lucky to ride with him twice a week down at the barn (RIP), he taught me so much stuff, from peg stalls to how to effectively take the piss out of Pete. Genius.

He was a proper nob by all accounts! He used to rent limos to turn up to contests and tout himself around like a Rap/Movie star! I think it was Todd Lyons who got his letter/resume looking for sponsorship and it was a pack of lies saying he'd won this contest and that, world champion this and that, i think one of the contests he claimed to have won was actually won by the guy (Tood) he sent the letter to!! Just taking this thread back to the top

Steve Grace.......Quality rider and top guy Ive not heard his name in years!

Also in my unsung heroes list (UK version) would include

Jerry (of course and defo at the top of the list!)

Steff Evans.......Demi God as Mark Noble used to call him!

Mike Canning........Big in the 80's but in the background in the 90's

Shaun Scarfe......watch him rip up the minis and midi with Zak at Leigh on sea on one of the early BSD vids

Grant Smith......... and all the Team Sano lot which includes GoGo, Ross Sewage and the scarily mental Scott Timmins

Marizu O'Kereke.........Never heard of him? ask Zak or Mad Jon they will rate Marizu right up there with the maddest of them

Nothing spells Danger like skaters from wrexham .... NOTHING!

One of them ... "Tall Pete", lived in Oxford for a while, and as a result a few wrexham lads visited from time to time, and I found myself in wrexham a few times. Top lads, but Danger!

tomlog apppears to have eased the log out of his life.........
dan eds and rich gibb were upholding the true spirit of wrexham/llan skaters over the weekend... no sleep til bedtime

coincidentally enough, tomlog met another lad called tom at university. whose nickname was also tomlog. for the same reasons....

The LOG name came from Evans Junior's extraordinary mathematical ability, the stunt poo is a myth.
