He beat it a few years later, but it's definately gonna get beaten with the big air ramp - I couldn't believe watching Kagy & Robinson last year...that double they did, Kagy's air was knocking on the door - I think he shocked himself by the look of that freeze half way up!
Awesome feckers.

Thank you Stodge my arse IS quite smart! Thanks for noticing.

ooooooooo yyyyyyes

When that Hofman add first came out I was sure it was a fake pic. I hadnt seen anything about the big 1/4 pipe and I figured, if you were going to do a 20 foot air, why would you have people standing on the transition?
I was wrong!
-
the first time i see that photo about 4/5 yrs ago i honestly got a semi on and wanted to be mr hoffman
-
amazing, even years later, just amazing,
was that the ramp matt strapped a strimmer motor to his bike and rode?
-
i had that video props i think around 1998/9 him riding a massive half pipe with that motor attached lol
-
That's really quite good indeed. :daumenhoch:

Nah, different ramp. A few years later he built a halfpipe, using basically the same dimensions, so around 21ft high. Thats the ramp he rode the motorised condor on. It had some rediculous roll in on it, about 50ft or summat.
Cost him a spleen I believe.
For all you trivia types, a lot of the first big ramp designs were done by Mat and a fella called Roger Wells, an old school motorcycle jumper more commonly known as Johnny Airtime. He helped another headcase called Seth Enslow on his way to world record attempts.
Ayethankyou. ;)

it thought he'd promised his wife he'd give up, the last time he nearly killed himself !?!
big air, Hoffmann and the Skater Danny Way facsinate me, nutters the pair of em !! :crazy2:

Such a good video clip. The man is just top banana ;D Did anyone see that programme he way in (think it was High 5 ???)
But he was awesome dude!!!! oh and very funny.....amnesia I think :LolLolLolLol:
-
Yep saw that High 5, where he pulled out a fresh chrome condor from a box...makes me goo.
I've got a pic of that motorised Condor in an old BMX Plus...I'll get it scanned in and posted up - brilliant....twobobrob is right it was for a halfpipe and it did cost him a body part!

truly insane. i was lucky enough to go to the hoffman comp in okc in 93 and see mat ride the ramp. MENTAL!
i also had a go myself, i sprinted the full length of the plywood run up and only made it to the bottom of the letter 'o' on 'hoffman bikes', the ramp was still nowhere near vert at that point, and it felt weird to run out of speed, a scary experience for sure.
i have some snaps of mat riding the ramp, but alas, no scanner.

Bloody awesome! Just to have rolled on that ramp would have been rad, I bet it really bought home just what he acheived on it?
Would love to see those snaps dude - find a scanner!!

mental :daumenhoch:, he is a god :)
when he did the air with motor attached to his bike, it must have made the air feel horrible with a heavy motor hanging off one side of the back of his bike :idiot2:
-
if you see the video on mad matt on the halfpipe he dropped like a stone on the air he crashed. He put that down to the weighting caused by the engine (i think it's in his book) - that crash ruptured his spleen which nearly killed him (flatline and all i believe, very kieffer sutherland)

I heard a story that Dave Mirra looked over the edge of that quarter and point blank refused to ride it. Is that a true story do you know? It allegedly happened at that comp.
I can imagine standing up there, looking down and saying 'fcuk this, and fcuk you.......' ;D
But thats just me............. :-[

Me too, and thats on any ramp over about 8 foot!
-
I have heard many stories about this ramp.
From Matts crash to actually flatlining from the crash for a short period ..... from what i understood after mat cained himself on this and was recovering steve swoope and some others damaged the ramp by taking half of it appart and trashing it claiming it was a hurricane or bad weather. This was done simply because there was a big fear at the hoffman house that matt would kill himself on this....
-
I reckon thats true for sure. You can imagine Steve Swope saying to the others 'he's out of town, lets get this thing down before he kills himself'. Thats what mates are for, right? :)
-
Cool tale and probably true, given that most people in Mat's life seem to be convinced he's gonna die trying something or other.
Like EK, he is a true legend.
:daumenhoch:

i used to have that high 5 mentioned and watched itnall the time, dunno where it is now, does anyone have a copy of it?
-
History attached, looks like record now stands at 26 1/2 feet. :wtf:
What can you say about a living legend

Yep, that 26' air was 6 years ago now and the record still stands, awesome.
But my money is on the record being broken at the XGames this year - the big air ramp is up to the job. I think either Kagy or Robinson will take it...
