My mate's just finished restoring his Pro Class which has been gathering shed dust since the late 80's. Most of the parts are exactly what he rode BITD plus a few NOS parts to help finish things off ... just needs replacement caps for the DX's now
To see this bike built up again for the first tiime in nearly 20 years was awesome ... here's some pics ;)

No fresh chrome here
The original "smoke" lacquer finish came off easily to reveal a tinted chrome which polished up real nice

If you don't mind me asking...how did he go about polishing the frame and fork? I'd like to do the same with 2 or 3 of my black chrome PC's.
Thanks...

You'll notice the main tubing will polish easily using Autosol. The tricky areas were softened with Nitromors and picked at with a sharp knife before polishing by hand and with a Dremmel
The whole process took some time but the end result was defo worth the extra effort :daumenhoch:

Thanks...Steve!
Can I also ask...
I see that he had to remove the original decals...and used a repop set afterwards. Is it safe to say that the decals cannot be salvaged at all from the frame? I haven't had much time to give it a try yet...but I'm hoping there is a way to save them. (heat gun...?) :-\

I'm not sure on that one Tom ... the original decals were removed in my absence. I reckon they could have been salvaged though rub-ons tend to stretch out of shape with heat

I must say having seen the bike in the flesh the pictures do not do it justice.
It is a brilliant looking build that he should be very proud of.

Thanks Matt
Like you say, the pics don't do the bike any justice ... it's a real beauty. It was great to meet you last weekend BTW ... keep me posted on the Diamond Back build :daumenhoch:

The ears were originally modified to fit around his levers and what remained has since broken off and gone missing :(

I've started on one of mine...and I have to say the results are beautiful!!!
Steve, how did your friend go about removing the black chrome in spots where it is still thick and unfaded? ie. I had a decal on my seat tube and the black chrome is still perfect underneath...can you explain his method and what to watch out for?
Thanks very much...
Also...I am trying as best I can to not disturb the original decals as I polish it...hope I can do it without lifting them off.
~Tom

Now that is one hell of a pro class. Some top parts on it too, Star bars FFS!!!!
Top resto job, respect to your mate for hours of dedicated polishing.

Use Autosol or a decent rubbing compound to polish out the unfaded finish that remains under the original decals. As you polish you'll notice the finish gets lighter in colour ... keep going until you break through to the chrome
To get the perfect finish you'll have to remove the original decals I'm afraid ... especially the downtube rub-ons
Hope this helps :daumenhoch:
