Hello there. I've created this thread so that i don't have to keep making a new topic everytime i come across the smallest of problems with my first build. I've had next to no experience of actually taking bikes apart and putting them back together, just did a bit of fun riding in my teens. I'm 24 now and have suddenly had the urge to get into it again. So basically i'm learning as i go along and i'd like to ask advice when i'm not sure about the smallest of things if that's ok. I'll also take pics as it progresses if anyone's interested. I'll try not to bore anyone ;D
Firstly, i've just received 2 sets of skyway tuffs from ginnys (thought i may aswell get 2 whilst they were coming quite far and i'm planning on another build at some point). They've arrived after only about 5 days which i'm chuffed about, with no charges or anything added by customs. So they've come with all the nuts and bolts n stuff, but now i think i need a freewheel. Which one do you reckon i should get? Does it matter? Many thanks!
-
you can only fit 16t or higher freewheels on skyways get a dicta or shimano and go for
16(rear) to 40-44(chainwheel/sprocket-front)
;)
-
Thanks mate, appreciate the advice. I've been out this afternoon and spotted one for a six quid which looked good quality and happened to be 16T. Can't remember what make it was now but it was nice and shiny so i thought i'd give it a bash. Thanks mate. I can always change it if it's not great. ;)
-
Well, i tried screwing the freewheel on that i bought yesterday. It screwed on fine but doesn't look right. Part of the freewheel protrudes past the thread on the tuff. Are there different widths of freewheels? Am i being an idiot here :idiot2:
I'm takin those freewheels back to the shop this afternoon, they can fu**in keep 'em ;)
It might help if someones got a close up pic of what it's supposed to look like.
-
Don't know if these are any help to you.

They just turned up this afternoon!
I need a white pair now to complete my set. I don't have a bike to put them on yet, I just NEED them, ok? :2funny: :2funny:

I can't see those pics, you must be rubbish :daumenhoch:
Only joking mate. The geez in the shop just told me that they always end up overlapping the thread on skyway's? Is he having me on or what? Maybe i should take a pic and let you know exactly how they're looking? Thanks for trying to help me so far peeps, i do appreciate it with my crap knowledge of building bmx's :)

Yeah, sorry for the poor pics, only got a camera phone at the moment until I can find my damn digicam charger. :tickedoff:
My freewheels sit proud of the threaded spindle too.

I can see the pics now mate, my pc must have been having a hissy fit yesterday, my fault. As long as were all in the same boat, that's fine! I was wondering whether there was a freewheel that actually fitted exactly flush with skyways, but obviously not. Thanks mate. ;)

Hi Barryzola,
I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread, I have just got an Aero Reflex F&F as a first project build (as I suppose many ebayers have !)
I'm currenty buying parts for it bit by bit while I restore my girlfriends old Dyno.
Adam
-
I think an Aero is a good choice to build as a first dabble. I myself did that very thing too. Good luck with your builds, chaps. :daumenhoch:

Nice bike drifter, i really like the colour scheme and the style. Adam, i reckon it might be an idea if we both (or anyone else) stick our aero queries in here as a few people might benefit in the near future. :)
-
I'm keeping one eye on the thread as well. I've got a couple of builds going just now, one being an Aero.
Like the red scheme HRD. Very nice. Especially the Sugino chainwheel. I've been searching for a good priced three piece crank but I might change my mind cause I like the look of that one piece and chainwheel. What make seat clamp is that by the way?
Keep us posted on the freewheel BZ but I recogn you should be fine as long as it's on straight and not cross threaded and you'll know if you've done that.
:) :) :)
-
thats a suntour seatclamp.
the freewheels usually overlap a bit.
-
Well, the freewheel does overhand slightly but everyone i've asked has suggested that's the way it will be. I've put the wheel on the bike and it looks fine and seems very, very sturdy. As far as i'm concerned that's the end of my freewheel problem/query. Seems fine and doesn't affect the way the wheel is fitted to the bike or anything like that :daumenhoch:
-
BZ,
On a previous thread you asked about alternative Aero decals and were pointed toward Del.
I've just received a set from Del, the same as the link but a different colour and they are really good, so if you haven't pm'd him yet, I'd recommend him.
:daumenhoch:
-
Yeah, i've spoke to him. I'm gonna get some when the bikes nearly finished, just gotta decide what colour i need :daumenhoch:
By the way, anyone got any useful tips on attaching the headset cups? I've been trying for over a day and still no luck. I don't want to damage the frame by smashing it too hard. :-\
-
The way i do it id to sit the frame on a thick bit of wood (so the head tube sits straight on the wood) then put cup on the tube (you can lightly grease it if you want to) then another thick bit of wood, then hit it square on woth a big lump hammer! works normally :daumenhoch:
-
I'll try that out then, Cheers. I'm also having real trouble finding a NOS white seat. Those Elina ones are a nice shape. Can't seem to find a white one anywhere. I've already got a post, just the seat needed. Thanks again for all the help :)
-
Stick a post up in the wanted section...i'm sure someone will have one you can buy :daumenhoch:
-
the best way of fittin headset cups to the frame is put em in the frezer for a while then warm the frame with hair drier whip cup out frezer n it should just pop in with minimal force , then repet with other cup till both in !!! this works a treat
-
I thought i heard about that freezer technique somewhere the other day. I stuck 'em in the freezer but forgot about the hairdryer bit. I got 'em out the freezer about an hour ago and banged them in with the wood and sledgehammer technique. The headset's all sorted now so i can move onto the crank and bottom bracket when my crank comes next week. Thanks again guys ;)
-
Thats a done deal Barryzola, I'll confine my Aero questions to this thread and maybe a nice little tips section may build up.
Highrisedrifter, that is one sweeeeet looking bike you have there.
I have decided on the black/chrome look (cheaper tuffs), I'll be contacting Del in the near future too.
Adam
P.S. I have never fitted BB or headset cups before, I was planning on winding them into place with 10mm stud and some large metal plates and nuts, overkill or no ? I'd just prefer not to hit things with hammers (as it usually turns out to be one of my body parts !)
-
Hitting things with hammers is a bit nervy. Use the big lump of wood.
I use a big rubber mallet rather than a hammer. Even if you do miss the wood you wont damage the frame.
-
Hey there badboys :daumenhoch:
I've nearly finished my first build now which is the above mentioned aero reflex. I've done something really stupid which i need advice with after you've checked out the pics of the builds progression. I'll add more detailed shots when i've fully finished it off for those of you who love to see loads of pics. Here's how it's gone so far anyway:

Parts include: Tuffs, elina peregrine seat, renthal layback post, gt performer bars, AME grips, dia compe 901's, Gt pedals, dyno stem, odyssey seatclamp, sugino crank, panaracer freestyle tyres.
Right, so now to my problem. I had a sit on it about a week ago to test out the brakes and stuff. The front caliper seemed to move a bit when i applied the brake so i decided to tighten it up a bit :-\ After a few too many turns i managed to brake the end of the bolt/thread off (i felt like a right nobhead :-[)
So, can anyone give me advice on what to do? This brake set is brand spanking stock along with the rest of the bike so i'd hate to have to throw it away and buy a whole new caliper. Can i seperate the thread bit and replace it? Can i get that part from a bike shop? Does anyone have a spare bit that they can sort me out with for a few quid? I really need your help here guys, you've been great so far :daumenhoch: Also, i've been having problems getting the brake cables to be really tight after i've installed them. Any advice on how to get them fitted real good? Thanks for looking peeps ;)
P.S - Anyone reckon i could do with slightly taller bars? I'm over six foot and i fear i'm gonna get back ache? Any advice on same type of style but slightly taller?
-
Looks nice mate!! yes i'm sure you can get an old caliper and swap over the threaded bolt parts no problem.........what happened to the black Tuffs and white walls?
I love that combo! :smitten:
-
Thanks mate! The black tuffs and whitewalls are laying in wait for whatever my next project is :daumenhoch:
Anyone got a cheapo old caliper to sell me then? :)
-
Is it for the front? if so i've got a bolt or caliper i can send you mate.....just PM me your address and i'll post it too you mate :daumenhoch:
-
just be carefull with the layback that high. laybacks have a tendancy to kill old frames, around the seatclamp area.
-
Cheers mate, i'll be lowering it slightly then. Should help my back a bit too with regards to bending down to the bars. Every little helps. :daumenhoch:

Try CW Pro or Expert copy bars (cost around £15, £20 notes NOS). They're pretty high and wide so comfortable for taller riders.....but are less practical on ramps though.

And laybacks have a tendancy to really layback as I found out once :LolLolLolLol:

Barry thats looking really good. Nice and clean with good colours. :daumenhoch:
If you have problems getting a brake bolt pm me. Is it the front or back brake?
I'm putting together a Reflex just now. What's been the hardest bit so far?

Was it an Odessey one then mate?? they bend more than a bendy thing!!
Oh and always remember to put your stunt pegs on far enough or they'll snap off :2funny: :LolLolLolLol:

:LolLolLolLol: Very good pickle, you remembered my trick stunt peg from Epic...poor Darren who was trying the Miami Hop on my Reflex......snap!!!!
Yes Odyssey, definitely a bender, now use Renthal, much harder...ooo errr :D
-
Thanks for the advice on the bars aerostylie, i'll look into it if need be.
Thanks for the offer Paulo, it was the front Caliper, but pickle has already kindly agreed to help me out on that front (you guys are good people). The hardest parts have been getting the brake cables to be tight (think i've got there now, just sorted the back brake and it's pretty good now, works fine). Other than that, getting the various cups into the headset and bottom bracket bit was a bit of a bummer. Had to use the wood and massive hammer technique and really give it a good bash. Other than that, it's just been making sure i've been doing things right by querying on here as it's my first build and didn't want to mess up. I bought one of those raleigh chain link extractor things for taking links off the chain that worked a treat (cost about a fiver but is something i can use again and again). Any more questions on anything you think i could help you with, just message me or post in here and i'll try to help you as best i can.
Just went out for the first ride on it with just a back brake. Only about 5 mins but it seems to all be fine. Just need to pump the tyres up a bit more, then get that front brake fitted when i get the part. Thanks for the help guys, you're :4_17_5:
-
Go for it fella. Now you're hooked. Whats your next build?
I know what you mean about the ball racers in the headset and bottom brackets. There's a thread on just now with some good advice about the bottom fork racer. I picked up a 1" steel tube from B&Q which slid over the fork nicely. One wack with the hammer and the racer was there. Also picked up a large nut & bolt with two big washers cause someone suggested to squeeze the fork ball racers into the frame rather than wacking them. Unfortunately I'd already wacked them in, but I'm ready for next time.
Enjoy the ride m8 :daumenhoch:
-
Cheers. Don't know what i'm doing next really, just gonna see what takes my fancy. :)
-
Bolt's in the post mate :daumenhoch:

Lovely stuff, look forward to getting it sorted when it arrives. Thanks for the help, it's very much appreciated :4_17_5:

thus starts the obsession.

As stated in an earlier post in this thread I'm in the process of collecting parts for my first old school build since bitd. I have made a webpage showing the parts I have sourced so far http://www.adboo.com/aero_reflex.htm
I did buy the new GT pedals for my girlsfriend old Dyno that I'm tidying up (see here http://www.adboo.com/bmx.htm ) but may put the old GT pedals back on the Dyno.
Would my new GT pedals be correct for the Aero ? I can't remember them myself in that era, but I can't even remember what pedals I had on my bikes.
Cheers............Adam

Well, i finished this bike ages ago, but just chucked a couple of pads on, even though they don't fit great. Thought i'd just go for a couple of pads instead of using the original decals. I've been going out for a ride on it occasionally, but giving it a good clean when i get it home. I'm really happy with it and it's really light. I didn't bother to get white tuff pads so i now have a nice yellow line around my wheels ;D Doesn't look too bad though, and i can always sort that out at some point with a bit of work.

Thanks for the help along the way folks, especially Paulo and Pickle for helping me out with the part for my caliper :daumenhoch:

Haven't put any of mine together yet at all ! I'm still cleaning up these bloody Renthal bars, there were some digs in the brackets and crossbar so I have been (hand) polishing them out. It's taking fooking ages but I'm sure it will be worth it.
