Just killed myself today fitting a tyre that was far too tight to get on.
Well once it was fitted somewhere along the line I punctured the inner tube. :(
Also some bloody fingers and scratched rims.
So... I was wondering if I took some 16" rims and tyres to halfords or other bike shop, would they be able to fit/change my tyres with ease ?? Would they have some type of machinery to do it ?
Reckon they'd charge me a fair bit for doing this ??
General advice needed please.
thanks in advance.

Hello mate, what are you using to get the tyres on/off with? Plastic tyre levers (3) are the way foward dude, as far as Halfords are concerned, for legal reasons I would NEVER say the thay are a bunch of useless mother fookers that wouldnt know harris from their elbow. :LolLolLolLol:

get one side of the tyre fully on, inner tube in with a small amount of air in it, start to push other bead in and push BOTH beads in to the centre of the rim this gives a little more room on the opposite side of the tyre, for really tight tyres rub some fairy liquid around the bead before you start :daumenhoch:
:) DINGO :)

Hi there, I'm removed plenty of tyres before without any problems... and I also use plastic tyre levers, which today decided to snap on me. ::)
These are mega tight... I've now given up on it and seeking help.
I only ask about halfords as they have removed freewheels for me for free so was hoping to get a similar deal with the tyres.
Maybe I should go to a ye olde bike shop instead ??
Sorry I know this all sounds pathetic. :'(

Tried using lube and those other techniques mentioned... but still took me about 2 hours to get 1 tyre on and punctured the tube. :LolLolLolLol:
thanks for the help so far.

Gotta say mate, I've had times before where I just couldn't get the tyre on it was toooooo tight. I walked away came back, didn't do anything different and it fell on.
Must be a knack.........but I'd be fek'd if I know what it is !!!

There's hope still. :)

i use me hands to get tyres on and off lol
but am like a orangatan tho lol
the nack is get the rim on one side and make sure its not seated as then its hard to fit
needs to be in the centre of the rim
new skool i use levers to get tyres of but me hands to fit em
as they are fecking tight and always get punctures if i use levers
-
i had a bit of trouble with a tight tyre and almost got it on then decided the best tool to finish would be a very sharp wood chisel needless to say i got it on but it wouldnt hold any air in the tube for some reason ::) :-[
-
It's not an SE rim is it? or whatever generic company they use. i have murders getting some tyres on mine.
-
and always put the tyre in around the Valve first and work away from there.........if they're OS tyres they normally just fall onto the rims :-\ failing that........bin the fooking tyres and get other ones ;)
-
i put the inner tube in the tire slightly pumped,i use a tire lever with a ali tube on it ,and then put loads of washing up liquid on the rim :daumenhoch: slips on nice and snug :daumenhoch:
-
Yeah good tip with the tube pumped up slightly.....keeps it from getting snagged as much :daumenhoch:

i remember BITD using my mothers spoons and then having to try and reshape them before he noticed they were missing :LolLolLolLol:

Owen,
I know what you mean about some are tough. I have had trouble removing some old tyres from wheels I have bought, like kenda or old carlisle tyres. Fitting grippa's comp 3 skinwalls etc no bother. Actually thinking about it the ones I have trouble with seem to be the black walls!!! ???

All modern stuff is built tight. I'm with Lazychubs, lever em off but use the Grip of Steele to refit them ;D
One side on, tube in with a wee bit of air (only enough that it holds its shape), squeeze the whole damn thing together and starting at the valve area fold the tyre over onto the rim. Don't be scared to use a bit of Fairy Liquid, Gob or silicon spray (cockpit shine) to help get the final part on.
One other thing; its easier if the tyre is warm and clean. You could leave it to soften in a hot bath or summat. :daumenhoch:

iv not used tyer levers for quite a while i seam to be able to just pull em off n on with hands now bitd i used to use wot ever spoons were about befor i got clip round ear
they sound a little to tight to me sure they are the right size

Some mixes of tyres and rims really are impossibly hard to fit. The sizing is right, over the years the tyres have become more technical and some are just a bastard to get on. Part of the reason is to keep em on the rim when people are running 100+ psi in them. :)

Thanks for all your help chaps... I ended up taking the wheels into halfords... although they charged it was extremely funny waching the guy struggle fitting them. Priceless !!! He ended up asking me to give him a hand... WTF. lol
Anyways... they are fittted, and they are definately staying on.
I'm giving up after this build... it's far to strenuous lol.
thanks !!!
