Title: Learning BMX Racecraft
Post by: aerostylie on May 14, 2007, 01:50 PM
Hi folks :daumenhoch:

Everyone is building up to the MK07 meet and I reckon a fair few of us are gonna be givin the racin thing a bash. With that in mind, do you think anyone would be able to give us novices a 'masterclass' during the MK weekend ie, start gate technique, manualling, when to pedal.......how to knobble the opposition!!!!

Last year I was just wobblin as fast as I could without any real 'application' and I either got left at the start gate or totally mullered in the motos, although it was still great fun :D

Any thoughts guys and gals about having a racecraft sesh ::)

Paul :)

Paul, you wont do any better than getting over to your local club, and watching their training or pop down to an OSS race, :daumenhoch:

Birmingham Wheels is my local but I think it's in the progress of being re-built but I'm gonna go over there one of the weekends to check it out and try and get involved.

I was thinking that there may be some Rad members who will be breaking their 'cherry' at MK,  so thought about a collective tutorial or practical.

Paul :)

My advice would be keep a close eye on Webdawg.  She may be all sweetness and light trackside, but when that gate drops shes is a fooooooking nutter :LolLolLolLol:

Also I would stay well clear of Darren as he likes to fall off in front of you and roll around in the mud :2funny:

practice 100 yards sprints from a standing start , keep relaxed and for fook sake move your torso, your arms are just as important as your legs when sprinting on a bmx. I have seen a few old school racers lately and they dont seem to be as one with there bike if you no what i mean? kind of all legs with stiff back and arms and it just looks arkward. just relax.
I have tried to explain what i mean but unsure if it makes sense.  :)

Makes perfect sense, Your arms help to lever your body and bike, you work against your legs to create more downward force and more speed.

And we are a bit stiff and rigid nowadays, its the arthritis setting in >:D

Thats right...effectively you are trying to rip the bike in half as you power... the upper body pulling up and the lower pushing down.
New school riders look stiffer in the saddle i think because they are clipped and are upstroking too.... i maybe wrong.

That can't be Ratty coasting over the bumps at walking pace can it? Well, it aint the case these days. Not trying to psyche anyone out (much) but that vid shows just how much Ratty and the rest of the OS regulars have upped our game this year. Anyone at last year's MK OS race is gonna have to find another 10 seconds at least to even keep up with the OS Summer series regulars this year. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!!!!

One of the mods must have read this by now!!! Im sure they will agree to an hour on saturday for a masterclass. I propose Wolfy and Flying fox to do it and MatDubb if he has time. It could be a valuable hour for all of us as you never stop learning.

Cheers Tim, but it is the truth, the OSSS07 riders have gone from being Xtras in Casualty to a fast and furious bunch of riders.

Andy, Falling off in your 2nd Moto....I stacked in my first and really didnt wanna do it again.......

And Dingo, I have nothing but respect for you, you are a quality racer, I was behind you at MK when you got out of shape over the little double, most riders would have been lying in the dirt, but you showed the skill and experience to ride out of it, I was sure you was going down.....

The ride & build club meet day is wednesday 4pm-7pm. they need more help from BMX racers too, as it seems to be leaning toward a mtb/4x track.
