Just read the thread and although I think the personal stuff was bang out of order I think the mods came over VERY VBMX on this one, I already had a thread pulled about the DC/SE Ripper, shoes ect because you didnt want the sponsors of MK upsetting!!
I remember everyone on here kicking off when Hal & Bill stopped everyone selling repop declas on ebay because of their involvement with SE/Mongoose ect...

double standards me thinks???

 :) DINGO :)

Just read the thread, shame it got out of hand he was a good guy and hugely knowledgable about mid school stuff.  Hopefully he'll be back, might be worth him getting some of this though...

maybe your right dingo, but he has got a long history of shouting his mouth off,  which i wont go into now cos ive spent most of the day thinking about it, which has put me in a pretty shitty mood. for the record, he has sent a message apologising for his comments, so its not all big brother.

He did it when he first came on, saying about how Stodgy couldnt use non matching parts on his bike but he apologised for that,
I think at least one other member on here behaves in EXACTLY the same way but not one word is ever said
I am not sticking up for Joe as I dont know the guy, just spoke a few times on PM but I feel an injustice has been done

who's the other member?

BTW he deleted himself.

this is the kind of opinion joe has.

the thing that ****s me off most, no, makes me want to puke my ****ing guts up is some 40yr old guy wanking off over his "collection" of old shiny bikes when they should really be out there in the world being enjoyed by some poor kid, being used for what they were made for.

I like darkersomeday and his "type first, think later" posts. I have to agree with his point on the thread, even tho you will have a hard time talking most BMXers, esp older ones out of their Vans.

I dont think he said anything too bad but there was no need to start the name calling. Even tho he didnt start it, and he shouldnt have been callled a wa**er, he also shouldnt have lowered himself to calling back.
Now, Im off to knock one out over the pics if his yellow challenger ... oh ... he wont like that!  :LolLolLolLol:

man i cant believe im reading stuff like this again.
its like the 69'er thing all over again that i ended up leaving being a moderator over.
no member should ever have to feel they have to leave because of a clash of opinions.
not good  :(.
Title: Re: what happened to Darkersomeday???
Post by: RATTY on May 18, 2007, 12:09 AM
wow, guys I thought this could have been dealt with a lot better, everyone is entitled to their point of view, especially as most of us probably never knew about Dc and Vans alleged view on BMX, a lot of the snipes were aimed at people on this site like me, who gave up in the 80s etc, who build pretty bikes which probably cost too much money, and do regret giving up riding at the end of the first wave of popularity. He wasnt telling lies though, flange and drink were lame excuses for giving up. Im sure most people gave up because they was embarrassed or had no one left to ride with bitd.
But i digress, lets not let this happen again, if a thread starts to get out of hand, we have enough mods to clamp it down straight away, lets not loose anyone else through petty disagreements and differences of opinion
Title: Re: what happened to Darkersomeday???
Post by: Beckyboo on May 18, 2007, 12:12 AM
I didn't actually call him a w a n k e r.

Instead I pointed out that he may not be aware of it, but he came across as one. Which I think he did and fiar enough, it didn't need pointing out, but he had just called my husband an  :Aresehole: which is not correct.  :)

Although it has been said that he did not start any name calling I disagree and found his comments prior to mine in that thread quite inflammatory. Comments such as:

where the fcuk have you been for the last 5 years?

climb back into your pram and i'll explain mate,

surely you cant be so stupid

if you actually give a shit about bmx

its easy to sit on the fence and dole out cheesey proverbs

simply childish,

where the fcuk did that come from? are we having the same conversation here mate?

but it wasnt me that dumped bmx at 16 for a moped and a slice of flange was it? "yawns"

:Aresehole:   (his comment not mine)

Not exactly merely voicing his opinion.

It is a shame he chose to delete his own account especially if some members got on with he guy and agreed with his views but I cannot see any conspiracy or undue pressure was exerted at all. It seems like it was his choice and a shame but I dont think he chose to because of a clash of opinions as he stuck around for some time after the following view about old school collectors.

the thing that ****s me off most, no, makes me want to puke my ****ing guts up is some 40yr old guy wanking off over his "collection" of old shiny bikes when they should really be out there in the world being enjoyed by some poor kid, being used for what they were made for.

It's a shame he's gone.  I don't know the bloke, never met him or spoken to him, even on here.  But it's a crying shame when someone feels they have to leave the site over one incident.  I understand his reasoning behind what he was saying, but at the same time, if I'm led to believe that DC are sponsoring RADBMX events, then the last thing we need is members slating them.  Biting the hand that feeds you springs to mind....

Anyway regarding the statement below;

A large percentage of the people on the site quit BMX at the end of the first wave of popularity and probably regret doing so. But what annoys me is the excuses for why they quit....booze....birds....got a car....these aren't credible excuses! I had relationships, cars, kids etc. but still managed to ride every day! (get me on my high horse) I find a lot of people went on to the next 'bandwagon' to come along MTB, raves etc. I don't have any ill-feelings towards people who are led by 'fashion' as it represents 99% of the population but it's just not me.

I certainly regret quitting riding when I did.  But to say that booze, birds and cars aren't credible excuses??  Of course they are!  They may not seem so now that everyone has been drinking, shagging and driving (not particularly in that order and at the same time  ) for 20 years, but at the time it was something new to try.  I do think about the years gone by where i wasn't riding and think what if.... but those years weren't exactly wasted doing fook all... i for one competed at judo for a number of years, almost qualified to be a contender on gladiators (don't laugh!).... and as for my drinking.... i've had some fantastic nights down the pubs and clubs over the years.  had some fantastic party holidays....  been out with lots of great lasses (and some not so great).  bought a few nice cars which i've always enjoyed driving... been travelling the length and bredth of the country and toured europe following my football team for the last 10-11 years.... built myself up some sort of career in IT....

bmx is not my complete life. it is a large part of it now and i will ride as much as i can now, but i'm not giving up everything else i do. hence, i don't do the friday riding sessions as that's beer time....  ::)

i know this doesn't sound very committed to the sport, but if you only rely on one thing in your life and that thing goes for whatever reason, then you have nothing....

Thank you for reading one of Trev's back from the pub and drunken night time rants.....  :LolLolLolLol:   This ain't the first and it certainly won't be the last....
Title: Re: what happened to Darkersomeday???
Post by: Trev on May 18, 2007, 02:23 AM
:LolLolLolLol:   don't take any notice of anything i say.....  once i've had a few beers i'll type anything....  :2funny:

i take it joe is darkersomeday...  i do also think he was treated rather harshly... everyone is entitled to voice their opinion on here regardless whether they've been riding all this time or like most of us, had a 20 year break...  the treatment he got was really unfair as he did have very valid points and they weren't just stupid rants about stupid things that have appeared on here before.

i think he justified in giving his views, but i think he probably went about it in the wrong way in expressing them.  i believe he was telling people not to buy dc or vans rather than saying that he doesn't buy them (i can't be bothered to go to the start of this thread to check).  No one likes to be told what to do, what they should or should not buy etc etc...  I for one would listen to someones opinion then make up my own mind about things, but would never let someone tell me what to do...  I think the vibe may have been that he's telling people what to do...  It was probably unintentional and has now blown all out of proportion... The end result is that we have lost another highly contributing member.  That is not good...
Title: Re: what happened to Darkersomeday???

Its not just that rad lost a good member, but it sends bad messages to people who don't post much 'cos what they say would not be popular with the pack mentality. I don't think Joe started the abuse and I don't think the abuse back was a problem either - but it is quite tricky to fit in here if you have quite strong opinions and they aren't the same as the vibe here.

I don't post much, but I have deleted 100s before I clicked send because I don't think peeps here would like what I thought and it all end up in a pointless row.

I also think it is impossible for DC or any other sponsor to give a toss about a few people on here that might suggest that their ethics or products are shit and to try and protect them by censoring posts/oppinions is pointless.
Title: Re: what happened to Darkersomeday???

To me it sends out the message that as long as the sponsors are happy we can afford to pi$$ off/lose the odd member here and there.......

I thoroughly enjoyed that thread   >:D and to be honest when reading it back, although it got a little heated was nothing to really consider leaving the forum over.

I think both guys have very valid points.  I wasn't aware of the Vans/DC issue, and if thats the way they play ball then thats sh1t, but it won't stop me buying a comfy pair of shoes !!!  Its a shame because I thought Joe was a good guy, I looked forward to his comments because he seemed well informed and was not scared to say how he felt.

When reading the original thread, you can see both gents were passionate in their writing and quite clearly believed in there comments.  We're all grown adults here, surely its a new day in the morning, so why leave ???

Ive got nothing to do with this at all and i wasnt a member when this was going on but we are all members of this site due to our love for bmx.

If you dont race ride or freestyle or only collect and let them gather dust, then what does it matter???? BMX is what its about. Thats our love.

Everyone is allowed there opinion but people should express it in a manner that dosen't insult or belittle. Lets just have a laugh and keep the banter flowing! IT AINT THAT SERIOUS! :daumenhoch:

Oh well, he left, fair play, as he said if you cant stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
So its ok for him to have hus bullshit rant but not me?
Just because i am a mod doesnt mean I dont or am not allowed an opinion on someone elses thoughts, thats the point of having a forum. I dont think I was heavy handed with anything, other than deleting one post in which he called my wife a C U N T. and even after that, I didnt start threatening to get his mobile number and start meeting him at motorway service stations or anything.

As Lazarou says, He's surprised that I bite back as I am the resident layed back hippie...Does that not give some credability as to how much shit one person has to dish out before i finally have a go back?

its fine to come on here shouting your opinion, but try listening to everybody's opinions, finding a balance to please every fooker on the site, whilst still trying to ride, build bikes, help organise events, raise money, moderate the forum, all the while "trying not to be like VBMX"  then tell me im being heavy handed with someone who goes shouting his part, not just about this issue but many many others, i could go back and quote some of his posts, but i wont, because I just cant be arsed.

tell you what, i'll resign as moderator, dordy already has, we'll all go one by one, then there will be no heavy handed 1984 VBMX type state, and you can all organise your own stuff, just how you,   like it. Itll save me a lot of time TBH, so perhaps ill have a bit more time to ride my bike without having to rely upon one of my lame excuses for not riding and wearing the right shoes.

Woooah, Calm down fella.

You were well within your right to do and act how you did, If someone called my missus that I would have met them in the service station !!  :2gunsfiring_v1:  I thought it was quite fair paring tbh.

Don't throw in the towel, you and all the other mods do a great deal for this site, I don't think its been heavily handed.  Forget the moderator, site supporter, whatever badges......I thought it was just two guys getting heated !!

Title: Re: what happened to Darkersomeday???
Post by: Stodgy on May 18, 2007, 11:28 AM
Just a note, the heated discussion was NOTHING about DSD's feelings towards DC/Vans - he has his opinion and he was pretty right, DC and VANS do have skateboard-only parks...afterall it is their core business (outside of the purely fasion industry).

I must admit I take great sadness that a paralell is being drawn with VBMX - the management of RADBMX are far far far away from corporate whores. We weren't stepping in against DSD to protect DC. The argument grew when he started with the personal remarks again when someone tried to challenge his opinion. I love a discussion based on facts, but when the schoolyard name calling starts it has to be nipped in the bud. Particularily when we have complaints from other members.

There is no doubt, we do need financial help with growing the site (remember a few weeks ago when no one could get on? it all cost money to sort out!) and to put on the kind of events everyone wants - things don't come for free and we all invest a massive amount of time too. There is a history with DC shoes and a massive about of background work which one of the MODS has put in to secure the deal - DC didn't just bang in and flash a load of cash around...it has been earn't. Their help has come just at the right time as 2007 Old School BMX is going main stream...and RADBMX, your forum, needs to be at the forefront - afterall we have some fantastic members and a simply massive knowledge base, and just like riders in the 90's we're the ones at the core of the movement.

DSD is welcome back whenever he is ready...his mid-school knowledge and good eye are well respected.

BTW, I really wish I had kept riding through the 90's. I didn't. But, hell, I'm as dedicated as the next man for keeping the BMX vibe going.

Stay rad and keep the faith. It's all good.

Long live the MODS !!

seriously I appreciate all the work that goes into making events and this site happen.   A lot of time effort and money is spent with often little or no thanks.   I'd be lost without my daily dose of radbmx. Its my coronation street.  I raise my glass. :4_17_5:

I dunno.......

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I will never shy away from giving mine  (as you've all noticed I'm sure   :D),  but I do spend a massive amount of time picking and choosing my words. If I was going to criticise DSD, then I would say he might do well to remember that for the most part the people behind the user names are fully grown geezers that have had a good dose of life and experience in many things, including riding.

He can be passionate. He can be opinionated. Thats all cool in my book. Who wants to be a sheep?  But typing exactly what you're thinking seldom comes out right, just like when you're talking to someone.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say.  But do it with respect  ;)

Joe had a lot of good things to offer the site with regards to new and mid school, but he didn`t really get the old school vibe at all  :(

And you need to take in to account that there are a lot of posts that are deleted before a majority of the members have seen them, and Joe had a few deleted because of personal comments that he made about other members.

However he was not in danger of getting banned and he choose to delete his own account, something that we can do nothing about.

Mark just think how would you react if another member decided to have a pop at your partner  :knuppel2:

P.s where is Joe from  ???

 :) DINGO :)

yorkshire,

after the sheer amount of e-mails, pm's and messages of support i've recieved thought i should at least put my point forward,

if you look at the thread you can clearly see the point at which i started to spit vitriol,  check muttley's message "what the fcuk are you on about now"  this implied to me that i'm seen as some sort of negative whinger, so i stamped on it,
muttleys reply to this was fine,
i straight away apologised for my sarcasm, its there for everyone to see,

the msboo wades in and openly, politely informs me that i come accross as a "w a n k e r",   at first i just laughed and took this as a joke,
but, mischief got the better of me and i started to wonder if i could get away with a similar response or whether i'd be jumped on for it,
so i responded with "no offence but you come accross as an i g n o r a n t  c u n t"   i chose the "C" word very carefully, not because i'd ever think of ANYONE in such a vulgar way, but to females the term illicits a strong response,
which it did.

now, i like oberon but his response's in the thread (to me) bore to relation to what we were talking about,
at no point did i mention anything derogatory about the events that you guys put on,
but i got the same "were just a friendly bunch" "beers, bikes and laughs" lecture, for absolutely no reason, as if i were in some way against it!

i actually applaud and respect anybody that throws there leg over a bicycle, especially a bmx, on a regular basis,
if you read my responses to the last mk event, they are ALL positive and supportive!  i love to see people enjoying riding, whatever form it takes!

i did think digging up my "collectors make me puke" was a little cheap, but its just a little internet banter so, fair do's!
from a purely idealogical perspective i stand by that 100%
if more young kids rode instead of taking drugs, nicking cars and mugging old ladies, the world would be a far better place.
but in practice i can see that these old bikes are quite rare and valuable and much loved so....
i hope that goes in some way to explaining it.

dcshoeco,vans and the usa skateparks,
in most cities across the usa if you try to ride a bmx in a skatepark youre in trouble, i most parks bikes are banned completely, you can even be fined by the police.
this isnt the fault of Vans or DC.
a few years ago Taj, joe rich and many other top pro riders started a campaign to let bmx bikes in public skateparks,
and many hoped the big skate companies would put there weight behind it but pretty much nothing happened.
for some people all this is irrelevent because its over there and not here, but imagine that scenario in the uk, how stupid would it seem?
not so much dc but Vans had a massive amount of financial support from bmx back in the 80's, at a time when skateboarding was dead, now i think its time the returned the support.
i have absolutely nothing against either Vans or DC, they both have amazing bmx teams and do a hell of alot for bmx,
but what i really wanted was for them and the other big companies to show support to there bmx customers by supporting the "bikes in parks campaign"
thats just my point of view, i'll tell people but cant force them to share my opinion! thats all it is, an opinion.

whats really weird though is that i skate! two of my closest mates are pro skaters!
at my local skatepark i know as many skaters as i do bmxers, as sports/lifestyles weve shared alot in common over the years,
i very much want bmx to follow in skatings success as a self supporting industry.

humour,
i get sick of saying this but it really is my fault when people take my harshness the wrong way,
"please dont get pissed off, i'm just taking the piss"
notice aswell that i only responded to peoples threads like this that i knew could take it, (stodge! :daumenhoch:)
or pre warned people otherwise!
it really is just an funny alternative to the usual "nice bike :smitten:" responses.

banter,

as many of you will know ther exists on the internet a type of forum/chat room dedicated to arguing,
most normal folk stay well away from the and rightly cannot see the point, but for someone in my trade it is genuinely priceless!
so i admit that i'm a little more distanced from the usual internet banter/beef than most,
its NOT personal, if it is youre finished.
most of you will already know this from experience and its a part of every forum i've ever been on. (check thecomeup or streetphire for proof!)

for over a year i pretty much moderated and administrated one of the biggest bmx forums in the uk, where i first met bill and he told us about this forum,
i honestly know just how difficult it is to keep the finite balance of a good, safe and fair forum thats accessible to everyone
and also know what a pain in the arse some people can be! me included!
but the one thing i absolutely always tried to do was keep it from feeling like "a clique"
no special priviledges were allowed to any of the moderators(or there spouses)
they gave it out then they had to be able to take it,
that (to me) is a fair forum.

i genuinely hope mr&mrs spaceferret didnt take any real offence and apologise for oberon walking away from his pc feeling pissed off,

anyone who i stung with the "you gave up on riding" jibes , dont be so daft, its just the obvious thing to say! more power to you for getting your bike game on again!

lastly,
thank you so much for all the pm's and e-mails i've had from across the world urging me to stay on the forum,
it stands as a reference for just how great this forum is and could be,

i'll look in on the forum from time to time to see what you lot are building and have a look at the events photo's etc, etc,
but i really feel personally that i'm not quite ready to remenisce(sp?) just yet,

one thing i would ask all of you though is,
to give the credit and welcome to the "new school" riders that they deserve, theyre the ones breaking themselves to push our sport further.

good luck with the MK event,

joe

Joe I`m glad you`ve come back because I really enjoy learning about the mid school era when the sport was dead because I missed it all completely, and I`m in to the new school side because I`m riding again after a 20 year break.

It would be nice if you`d come to one one of our gatherings too, be asured you are more than welcome on here so you can change your screen name back to dsd if you want  :daumenhoch:

Joe had a lot of good things to offer the site with regards to new and mid school, but he didn`t really get the old school vibe at all  :(

And you need to take in to account that there are a lot of posts that are deleted before a majority of the members have seen them, and Joe had a few deleted because of personal comments that he made about other members.

However he was not in danger of getting banned and he choose to delete his own account, something that we can do nothing about.

Mark just think how would you react if another member decided to have a pop at your partner  :knuppel2:

I have had it Bill and me and Andy nearly came to blows over it BUT Joe didnt start the flack this time, others did and he reacted accordingly and everyone jumped on him and that is why I was so annoyed, Phil brought up DC's involvement with the site not Joe, joes comments were about DC's ethics towards bikes in their parks nothing at all to do with DC and MK

Its nice that DC are giving you money for stuff BUT as I said before the very way in which you are handling this is the very thing you all say you all hate about Vintage, I noticed Rad didnt back Winstanleys when they were getting slated on here, would they have done so if Winstanleys gave them some sponsorship?
Its an open forum and Joe was commenting on a company as he saw it and it should have been left at that

which is exactly what I will do now, leave it at that  :daumenhoch:

I don't think things members say in the heat of the moment or without really thinking can be regulated and to some extent since we are all human and not perfect it happens and people sort out there differences. Rad is not VBMX after all.

Persistantly offensive or trouble causing members seem to be easily recognised and fairly treated by both moderators and site owners.

What is sad is when members, who are valued and liked,  make comments meant to maximise offence and choose in the cold light of day to post comments with the intention of provoking a response. Case in point:

so i responded with "no offence but you come accross as an i g n o r a n t  c u n t"   i chose the "C" word very carefully, not because i'd ever think of ANYONE in such a vulgar way, but to females the term illicits a strong response,
which it did.

Sadly, no such response illicited from me, who really couldn't care less, however it does seem just not cricket.  Be assured that I am certainly not offended and accept that people are just as opinionated as I am and, like me, may not always express it in the best way.

Anyway, time to move on the sun is shining and tomorrow is another day :)

wow . that vid was crazy. I love in Sunnyvale california. There is a a beautiful park 2 miles from me. Its lovely. We all pay out taxes, but bikes  are not allowed. There are no facilities for bikes at all.  Instaead Ive got to travel 17 miles to a lame park, which the cops don't visit much. The sunnyvale park always gets calls from the skaters who come and bust the riders. I just can't understand it.  Its all for them. It really is unfair. Of course its not the cops fault. they are just upholding the law when they receive a complaint, but the rules are ridiculous. Share and share alike. I woun't care if they allow bikes on a Sunday morning only or whatever, but to just say thery are not allowed. without providing similar facilities it just wrong. The UK is far more relaxed about bikes and skateparks than here.

I just watched the vid. It's crazy that bikes aren't allowed in. I'm sure skaters wouldn't object to bikes coming in one day a week. And those that do object, need to reailse that skating and BMX go hand in hand.

The land of the free my arse . I think the American National Anthem needs ammending.

exactly what i was thinking.
i believe the whole western world is becoming like this. i noticed in the vid hardly any of them were wearing helmets, here in Australia the coppers would have been handing out fines like confetti. yes i do have compulsory helmet wearing issues  :2gunsfiring_v1:
