No, not original. It's been coated up and re-decalled. Looks the part tho. ;) G.

The frame and fork set were already coated up etc when i bought them. I'm sure they had the turbo-lites treatment. All i know there's a lovely, blue tint lacquer covering the chrome. Tough too. I've knocked the coating more than a few times now and not even a glimmer of chrome showing.
I put this Turbo up against my other with original finish on it, and the match is kinda close. The original finish is a little darker and has the oily effect to it. I like this one the way it is tho, and don't think i'd recoat even when an excellent match for the original is sorted. ;) G.
-
Grem, can you make inquiries as to what was used on the finish mate, theres a lot of non black chrome learys awaiting the treatment
:daumenhoch:
-
:smitten: looks awsome mate :daumenhoch:
-
Gremlin,
Please do find out what you can about the coating, I have now finally nailed down a F=F and bars :daumenhoch: that need some love!!
Cheers
Paul

I'd call it perfect :daumenhoch: !

Thanx all. It's great to get positive feedback on the build. Here's a shot of the whole bike. Plus another closer shot.
Not the best of days to take pics outdoors. So will sort a load of nice pics, and get it into the Museum at some point soon.

Glad you finally managed to source a set of NOS chrome 7x's ;)
-
if it was funmonsters then i got it re-done ... :daumenhoch:
-
Yup, Lee's spot on. I sourced it through Andy (funmonster). ;)
It was like all my Xmas's rolled into one when i unwrapped the frame and forks set. :smitten:
So a huge shout to Andy for supplying the frame/forks, parts and lotsa help. Lee for the finish, decals and lotsa advice, Ian for helping me along the way with trying to source a chrome Araya set. And everyone else who helped me along the way. The list is long and distinguished... You know who you are :daumenhoch: Gav.
-
gav ! the turbo looks the bizzzzz mate :daumenhoch:.. for those who are thinking about getting it done my guy can do the finish as thin or heavy as u like , i just wanted to keep the chrome visable undrerneath other wise if it goes too deep it will just look like a normal paint job colour ... im not saying its 100% accurate but it prety damn good .... gav are they the nos cranks u got of andy too ?? i would like to see the finish on them to for comparison , i bet an original turbo tint has faded somewhat 20+ year on due UV , and being cleaned over the years .. so im matchin up to a finish that may be a few shades of and original nos tone if u get me .. also the chrome underneath must be pretty good to otherwise u will see the imperfections....
-
What a great build there mate. Really stunning. a1. :4_17_5:
Lee (pkradman) you are the bmx genius! ;)
-
:LolLolLolLol:not really nick .. u learn as u go along r , when i done mine i must spent a week sorting the colour alone .. my paint guy had 5 attempts before it was close enuff
hers anothe favorite angle of my turbo , just for the sake of it .. (http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/v737/pkradman/turbosale011.jpg)

SICK!
When i get a moment mate im coming up to have a butchers. Awesome collection. :4_17_5:
-
No i didn't have Andy's nos turbo crankset Lee. I seriously considered getting them tho. But was happy in the end to spend a bit of time refurbing the turbo cranks that came with the frame and forks.
Hey Lee, now we've worked out and you remember sorting the coating for my F&F. Howz about getting your m8 to coat a set of my turbo handlebars up for me? So they match? ;) :daumenhoch:
Yours is one sweet turbo. I always loved that bike and it's nice to see you added a bit of individuality to it by having the downtube decal put on the wrong way round ;D. G.
-
:LolLolLolLol: never noticed that
-
Amazing Turbo Gremlin....just saved mine from the old mans garage (after 20 odd years) at the weekend and am about to start the refurb so may need some help from some of you experts. I will take some shots over the next few days for you all to see and keep you updated on progress. :daumenhoch:

-
wow !! that HLT is the absolute Don !!
another stunner from the RADBMX Stable !
.....................NICE !! 8)
-
Steve... You de-smoked a fresh Turbo? Wow ;D...
I felt bad enough de-smoking my second Turbo i picked up a couple of months back, and the finish was almost faded beyond recognition on that.
Then again b.i.t.d i'd say we all treated bikes and bits in a way that we'd class as sacrilege now. :knuppel2:
I think i'd have helped a mate to do the same for the hell of it >:D.
I had an original Turbo back in early '84. Should have stashed it :-[ G.
-
Can someone help me get the shots of my saved Turbo up? Do I need a web file or can I download straight to rad bmx? :uglystupid2:
-
grem that bike is stunning mate, the attetion to detail is a credit to ya :4_17_5: :daumenhoch:
-
Gremlin that bike is just beautiful. :smitten: I commend you on a job well done :daumenhoch:
I just love it when pictures of refurbed bikes appear on RAD.
Where did you source the chrome ARAYA's from if you don't mind me askin.??????
Andy.
-
Hi guys. Thanx for the compliments ;)
This Turbo was always going to be a special build for me. Not just a museum piece either, it does get ridden. 8) Weather permitting that is :D
This is the one build that started it off for me again, before i caught the bug >:D She's still not 100%, but i'm 100% happy with her :smitten:
Andy, the Araya's were an eBay auction. They sat there for a few days, as i just thought they were 20x1.5's.
They were in this country, and cheap as chips too. So eventually i fired him over an e:mail he replied, I nearly cr4pped when i read his reply, and hit the B.i.n button sharpish.
Sets were going for over £60 more and that was from the States.
Also mine were newly built up wheels, all nos bits, but not tightened down etc. So i ended getting new hubs, spokes and red nipples all inc. Which is nice :daumenhoch: G.
A pic of one of the wheels before it was stripped and turned into a Turbo wheel.

Cheers Gremlin, I wish I'd spotted em. I've just gone for a silver set on my new build as chrome are always a bit dear when they come up (if ever in this country!).
