As the title says we were called to the council offices and given our redundancy
packages and told if all the legal/ tender stuff for the new owners is not sorted
by Oct 1st the park will close, another Youth Service cut to save more cash.

NO FOOKING WAY!
If that place closes I'll be devastated, along with Rom it holds a very special place in my heart and some fantastic, best of my life times!
Can't get me head round this one!

My thoughts exactly!!
-
I cant believe that. I have never been, but Southsea is part of UK BMX and Skateboard heritage, surely something can be done to save it?
-
oldmankev can you get the council office email address so we can buzz the buggers
-
no way, thats some bad news.. :'(
is there anything we can do to stop this happening kev?
gonna have to get more sessions there incase it is no more. :tickedoff:
steve :daumenhoch:

man thats sh#t! ive got some fond memories/scars of southsea
we gotta do something dudes!
ive always had a dream of running the skatepark, is there anyway we can buy it off the council as i know a few rich people who are looking to fund some projects
-
noooooooooooooooo :-[
-
I would contact the local bike/skate/rollerblade/mtb/soapshoes magazines and tell them the park is closig and then follow it up with a huge protest march through the city and have a large picnic/jam in different parts of the town.
This will bring attention to the problem and if that f*king bylaw is still in place in southsea making it illegal to ride a bmx or skate on the street then they cant shut down the park ... thats criminal.
I hate southsea as a town, but the park was good.
-
no this won't happen - it can't!
i spent loads of my youth there and still go, only went last friday..
I would have thought the park, a piece of 70's history would be a listed structure or something, it needs to be preserved
-
bollox....this cannot be allowed to happen....

sorry to hear you are loosing your job kev, :'( if it was a football pitch it would be another story :tickedoff:
it will be a crying shame if it closes its a bit of history ,i used to skate there in the 70s and ride there in the 80s and have some great memories of the place, heres a bit of history, the badges were given out when you completed the bowls, good luck finding a job kev :daumenhoch:
-
Erm....the whole shock of Southsea potentially shutting down stopped me from saying sorry to hear about your job Kev. Hope you get something sorted as soon as fella. It wasn't until I read the last post I realised this poor lads loosing his job too and we're all moaning about a bloody skatepark.
Sorry about that dude!
:daumenhoch:
-
yeah sorry about the job fella hope it all works out in the end
-
Sorry to hear that Kev (your job and the park closing).
Southsea is an icon of UK freestyle.
Hope things get turned around and it stays open.
-
How much (roughly) do you you think it costs to run / month?
-
Kev,
Sorry to hear about your job bruv.
Whats the issue with the new guys then, we can't let it close, any ideas how much it would cost to take it over. I know a few people !!
-
is there any way, it can be bought privately?
where can we find out, we gotta do somthing, this place cant be lost..
sorry about your job kev, that sucks :tickedoff:
steve

Guys i should have made it more clear this is a worse case scenario as obviously we wanted
not to have a gap before the new owners take over but the winners of the tender to run the
place wont sign unless the contract is exacly what they want. The park will always have to
operate as a Skatepark, what i should have said earlier is the Council wont open it in the Winter
months ie from Oct to March but only as a Summer concern. Thanks for all the concern about
my job i will hopefully be working for the new owners once it is all sorted. Will keep you all
updated as soon as i know myself.
-
That still sucks kev, especially as your losing your job aswell, why are the councils so poor in the south, all the effort people go to to create or redevelope an old park or build a new track, and they just dont want the bother of maintaining an existing one.

Crap, I have loads of memories of this from BITD too. Not good! :'(
-
Its all about money Rich, it really pi$$es me off when i get the free council
newsletter through the front door telling us how they have spent 400K on
the toilets opposite the Hovercraft pad but the Youth sites all over the city
are all closing along with 3 of the cities swimming pools.

lets buy it..
-
lets buy it..
I think i've got a fiver knocking around somewhere :LolLolLolLol:
Seriously though, what would. rhetorically speaking, somewhere like that cost to buy and maintain?
HRD
-
Its a good idea guys but you will need a couple of
hundred grand to even think about it.
-
i would have though southsea would have cost a lot more than a couple of hundred grand. the land itself must be worth a few bob to someone in that prime location.
-
whats southsea like ive never been........
-
lol that'll be your tombstone ;)
-
whats southsea like ive never been........
:LolLolLolLol: you should try it mr KOS....

i spoke to dennis wingham not long ago about setting up an indoor skatepark and he said it would take about 200k
to do it properly,i put it forward to the investors i know and they where quite happy about the figure so im sure theres a way of us keeping southsea

that figure seems really low. all depends on how big you want it i suppose.
you've also got to take into account whether you'd be buying a warehouse or renting it.
-
It's highly unlikely anyone will ever be able to buy Southsea skatepark lock stock and barrel. And especially not a nationwide consortium of reprobates like us ;D ;D ;D
As for setting up our own indoor park; it can be done for £30k, it can be done for £500k and anywhere inbetween. Assuming of course that we don't intend on actually buying the building.
There are many ways to do it, but be warned - its bloody hard to make it pay in this country. Or in any country for that matter.. If everyone agreed to accept it won't ever pay and meet the costs involved regardless, with the right management it might work. It's a big ask though.
-
Southsea Skatepark should be listed! It's of historical importance! They list fookin 80's office blocks ffs!
-
Funny you should say that, the bandstand is already listed. Hence why its still there, the fooking thing.
-
It gets in the way but you have to love the bandstand!!
-
thank fook for the bandstand, it used to have speakers in it pumping out music :daumenhoch:
anyway the rest of it should be listed
-
ive done many good endos under the bandstand on rainy days ............. :smitten:
-
