Title: Back yard ramp
Post by: billstup on November 10, 2005, 05:12 PM
So I finally started on the ramp about 2 months ago, here are some pics of how far its got so far. It will be 36 ft long including the decks at each end, it`s 16 ft wide and will have transitions of 7ft high ( 8ft radius )

This some of the 7`x 2" timber that was salvaged from a referb job that we are working on at the moment, but it all needs de-nailing,

This is after de-nailing,

Setting out has began,

I needed to make a level area so made some concrete footings and added concrete blocks for the bearers to sit on,

This is the base almost done showing how far out of level the garden was,

These are some of the transition pieces that have been cut to size,

One side of the transition started,

Some dpc where some of the timber meets the ground,

The cat gives it the once over, approval is given.
Unfortunately the weather and the fact that I fell on to my shoulder from about 8ft at the Charlton spine ramp has slowed me down a bit this week, and I could do with some more timber from another referb that we are waiting to start, so its slow going at the moment.

I need to practice a bit more before making a trip down to Carlos` ramp.

Top tip for you here, don`t take a 20 year break and think you can still ride, it takes lots of practice and lots of pain to get backin to the swing of things again  ;)

looking great Bill.  :)   you do know that you are going to be the most popular geezer on the estate . You will never know you had so many 13 year old friends.  ;D
Bill are you planning on painting the ply  , it isn't ideal but it does make the ply last a bit longer.
Title: Re: Back yard ramp
Post by: billstup on November 11, 2005, 11:01 PM
I started talking about the ramp to the mrs in January, and when it changed from a definate `no` to `well how big is this ramp going to be`I knew I`d broken her. Mind you the holiday in Portugal next June and the new 3-piece suite helped smooth the way ;D

The ply is all treated Stoke bloke, the marine ply for the riding surface and decks is all done with decking sealant as it is non slip, all other surfaces are covered with a water based preservative (the red colour that you can see) this is too slippery to ride on though.

Did some more work on it today, it might need to be a little lower, it stands 8`4" from the ground at the moment and looks a bit big, once the decks are done and some rails are put on it it will top 12ft.

Not really bothered about the neighbours, its a temparary structure and it`s my garden so I`ll do what I want in it, I do love it when someone tries to tell me what I can and can`t do in my own house ;)

I made a bit of a mistake though, I forgot to cut the extra 6" off the transition peices before they were fitted in place, so it stands at 7`6" at the moment, and I`m not sure how to do the copeing so I have a bit of working out to do before the platform can go on  :(

Yep but its getting a new and bigger site! It amazies me that for years we tried so hard to get a skatepark in Crawley....they get one and then the council decide to demolish it and offer the possibility of a new one. Legends came from Crawley in the 80's....Dean Rush, The Zoid and Mr Canning was linked heavily to Crawley when we were young. Makes me wanna throw!!!!

Bill,  I see you have slotted your trannys to accept the crossbearers; how are they fixed in? I see they are nailed at the very ends but what about int' slots?

The reason I ask is because the very top timber will be the bearer of your coping and it needs to be ferking solid, you will break it apart in no time at all otherwise. Not that I'm suggesting you hang up at all...... ;D

Don't start your platforms until the coping is set to height, but you can complete your 'ladder ramp' entirely including surfacing the flat bottom. You want to make sure that you lay your ply in such a pattern that you are able to overlap every available joint and then your top layer offset in order to tie everything together. You may have to add the odd timber here and there in order to have summat to screw to.. It's a wee bit tricky to work out initially, thinking cap on  ;).

You can also fit your bottom layer of tranny ply, starting from the flat bottom with a full sheet working upwards, so your cut piece of ply is fitted to the top section of the tranny under the coping. Again, you may have to add timbers so that the ply joins mid-timber in all directions.

Coping-wise, If I were you I would just have Andy Peerless make it for you, tabs and all. I assume you could carry it on the roof of your van?  I'll then come round, set the coping to height and reach and you can carry on with platforming and final sufacing.  Easy!!  :)
Title: Re: Back yard ramp
Post by: billstup on November 13, 2005, 10:15 PM
At the moment the cross brearers are only slotted in the trannys but screwed at the ends, but I need to cut off 6" of the trannys at the top, then I can put the last cross bearer in so I should be able to fix that however it needs to be, should I also fix the other cross bearers ? at the moment they are just slotted in very tightly.
Where should I put the top cross bearer in relation to the coping, i.e. how much room should I leave to fix it to, to be honest I`m a bit lost on the coping fixing  :(
Title: Re: Back yard ramp
Post by: QUADROPHENIA on November 13, 2005, 10:24 PM

bill i shouldnt worry about the coping, the size of the fecker nobody is ever gonna get near it anyway
Title: Re: Back yard ramp
Post by: TwoBobRob on November 13, 2005, 10:31 PM
The coping will sit on top of your final cross bearer, so you need to create a perfectly level, straight line through that top timber. Fit it just the same as the others, but it needs to be mechanically fixed, so maybe run some support timbers vertically down to ground that sit tight to the underside of your top cross bearer.

Why are you chopping the top off again?  I'm sure you know that doing that is going to mellow the ramp out, have you compensated for that?  Mind you, it looks steep enough - probably won't hurt to keep it mellow, makes it a proper midi ramp then.  :)
Title: Re: Back yard ramp
Post by: billstup on November 13, 2005, 10:37 PM
It should be 7ft high with an 8ft tranny, or should that read 8ft radius, but I forgot to cut it down to size before I fixed it, so it stands at 7ft 6" which I think would be too steep once the coping is fixed  ;)
Title: Re: Back yard ramp
Post by: TwoBobRob on November 13, 2005, 10:52 PM
Oh, I get ya.  The 'rear' tranny section is cut from a full 8x4 sheet stood on its end right?  take away the height of the flat bottom and your left with a ramp 6" higher than planned, but correctly radiused.

Honestly?   Whether you leave that bit on or lop it off will depend entirely on how much true flat bottom you have in that ramp. Take how much you built in and add another foot (the beginning 6" of tranny is virtually flat). That will give you 'true' flat bottom. If its closer to 12 foot then chop the ramp down. If its closer to 16 foot, leave it in and accept you now own a BIG midi ramp... ;)

Post by: billstup on November 13, 2005, 10:59 PM

Title: Re: Back yard ramp

becky boo has said that if i finish the rest of the garden first, (theres always a catch aint there), i can build a ramp in the backgarden.

I have got about 30-35 foot, by about 12-16 foot, so bill ,be prepared for me bugging the hell out of you, concerning ramp building type questions.

Well one side are new so it was half built when they moved in, but they have two boys and they`ve been on it today  :daumenhoch:  The other side we don`t really talk to so I don`t care what they say anyway  :daumenhoch:

I did worry they might complain to the council planning dept. but because its a temperary structure, and its less than 4m high and is not more than 50% the size of the garden they can`t do feck all anyway  :daumenhoch:

Just wait till the summer when I hold a jam  :10_2_12:

I did check the planning laws on the net and as long as it is not over 50% of the size of the garden, and less than 4m high then it should be ok. It is a temporary structure so it should be exempt anyway, but it wont hurt to ask your local planning office at the council first as most areas have different regulations  :daumenhoch:
