i think the tao was 97/98. don't hold me to it but i'm sure 96 was a little early! ig ot my first standard in august 1996 and the tao wasn't around then.
the trailboss then became trls 250 also:
the bicycle motocross became the 125 then 125 r with the introduction of ox plat tubing
trls 250 ox
sta 500 ox
250 s
250 L
also the destoyer 50. (i think that was its name) it was either a 16" or 18" sta for toddlers!
-
nah man the tao was earlier than that.. a quick glance at the video shelf shows props 13 to be march 96 which had that sick osicka advert with front wheeel boomerangs and the beatles song on his new red Tao.. and it was in ads in Tread which didn't really get past 1996!
-
i THINK shortys were 18.5 and lengthys 19.5, like the master and sport too
-
rain man?
-
he prototyped it for a long time though before it was released. but i'll go with it as i'm not sure

-
i just went out and had a measure 19.5 and lengthy 20.5 c to c
but they might have done some different lengths earlier
-
what year did they top using the waterford frames
as i just spotted some waterford decals on the yellow shorty on my wall.

I think these also need to be added
125R (20" & Cruiser)
100R

My mate has a Waterford Lengthy, I'm sure he said it was a 20" TT..... I'll check it out over t'weekend. :)
-
the out any doubt my 96 1" 1/8 lengthy was a 20" toptube, center to center
-
i will double double check tommorow but i did measure it 3 times
as i was starting to question myself but that aint hard lol :daumenhoch:
-
harris your more than likely correct. i'm pretty sure they lengthened the toptube to move with the times in the mid 90's
-
My Shorty Measure in at 18-18.5 depending on where you measure. Not sure how Standard Measure thier toptubes.
-
center to center
-
its a bit of a mystery,
the 125r i had for awhile was supposed to be "21 tt but when i measured it centre-to-centre it was actually "21.25,
strange too as they were made at waterford "precision" :LolLolLolLol:
-
Ok if I measure Center to Center i get 19 inches.
-
i got 19.2" lol
-
Hey Dan!
Any word on the Decals yet?
Have you built any of those NOS Standards yet? Shoot me some pics if you have.

"the 125r i had for awhile was supposed to be "21 tt but when i measured it centre-to-centre it was actually "21.25,"
remember that standard frames also get made in custom sizes too!
-
thats probably what it was philsta :daumenhoch:
have you and laz ever considered getting customs done?
did you ask about it when you visited?
-
thought about it but i couldn't be bothered with the two month wait! and besides 20.5 is perfect for me.
a mate got a custom trls 250 a few years ago. can't remember what was different with it but he was stoked with it.
when we were there though there was a custom 250 in bear metal in the standard warehouse which looked awesome so they do have the requests!
-
Most BMX companies state "Actual Top Tube Length". Maybe Standard quote "Effective Top Tube Length" which will explain why, when you take a tape measure from the top of the head tube to the top of the seat tube, you get a longer measurement than you expected (e.g. 21" frames coming up as 21.25").
Actual Top Tube Length is the norm for BMX frames. Effective Top Tube Length is the more common way of measuring MTBs and road bikes.

My (probably flawed) attempt.....
1992 Shorty (flat/mini) and Lengthy (mini/street) Designed by Rick Moliterno and Krt Schmidt and manufactured by local (Davenport IA) engineering firm.
Reports of terrible finish quality. Standard pioneer(?) deep socket pegs.
1993 Manufacture switched to Waterford Precision Cycle for prototype STA.
1994 STA (Stronger Than All) (street/dirt) and Bicycle Motocross (race/dirt) and A-Headset system used in BMX for first time.
1996 Tao (pronounced Dow) non-platform flat bike designed by Paul Osicka.
1997 Trail Boss (dirt ) (now called trails) BMX/STA crossover designed by Robbie Morales.
1998 Shamen (flat/street/mini) non-platform slightly longer than the Tao flat bike designed by Bobby Fisher.
1999 Lengthy '2' (park/street) Burly STA with dropouts that went to 10mm at the hub designed by Jim Reinstra. Standard started the (unnecessary IMO) 500,250,125
after a fallout with Robbie Morales who took the Trail Boss monicker with him when he left to start T1 with Joe and Taj.
2000 Cashius (all rounder?) designed by Jon Luc-e Englebert.
2002 Bullitt (for the refined rider!) Designed by Rick Moliterno and pioneered the use of 'air hardened' tubing and smaller, lighter dropouts.
By this time the market was saturated. I lost interest as the BMX world stagnated (for me) I started to go back to my roots (VBMX) and here i am!
That's all i know.
-
fookin hell tony. i wish i had that good of a memory. or magazines.
