I put a 6 speed MTB hub in a cruiser. I just built the 24" rim into an old MTB hub and forced the frame open a little wider. I had a simple thumb shifter on the bars with outer cable all the way to the mech, that was held on with a bolt on mech hanger. It worked fine (but looked and rode awful). I wanted to use the bike for just "riding about" and thought I would need a few gears. I never really needed to use them so I put it back to single speed. The bike felt so much better! The chain didnt flap around when I jumped off curbs and I could even fire out the odd 180 cos the chain stayed on when I went backwards.
I think I have got some pics of it somewhere cos I helped a mate out and did some riding shots for MBUK on it (or some other MTB mag). I will try and scan them in if I can find them.
I did start to think about using the shimano Nexus internal hub gear but I never got as far as finding one. I think they are 5 speed and I think they work way better than a sturmey archer 3 speed. You might need to muck about with the front ring size to get the set of gear ratios youd need.

Cheers for all that Alex :daumenhoch:
