hey,
just discovered this blue peter gem which Im sure your all familiar with.
/>
Im certain I remember it from the first time round but I was very very young.
Anyway, I am a little baffled about when he does the backward dropin and he rolls back without backward pedalling...
Were freecoaster hubs around back then?
-
just a regular coaster brake.
-
denny has got a whole load of great old school footage on you tube. check it out. :daumenhoch:

Been around since the 70's as far as I can remember, god I'm old.
Most people used coasters before freewheels in freestyle mate because Bob Haro used one.
I personally couldn't get on with them but a few of my mates used them bitd and I know Bill Stupple used one, not sure if he does these days.
Daz. :daumenhoch:

bill stupps use to ride with a coaster bitd, but rides with a freecoaster now.
ron w always rode a coaster bitd. although he did eventually have an acs freecoaster. the one where you could switch between a coaster and a freewheel. he used to switch it to freewheel when he did his miami hopper backwards drop ins. but that would have been about a year or so after the blue peter footage was taken.

That was brilliant - good old Blue Peter.
-
so you can both brake and roll back freely with an old school coaster brake?
sound awesome must get one!

if you pedal backwards on a coaster, the back brake locks on. but rolling backwards the pedals stay where they are as with a modern day freecoaster.
they are good fun, but can be dangerous when you use them for the first time. i used to love them bitd. only because my favourite tricks were pedal pickers and they were so much easier with a coaster brake. and backward pedal pickers would have been practically impossible without one.
also kickturns variations were a lot easier with a coaster brake too.

they aren't awesome, they are awful things
hard to get used to, but rewarding if you do though, i suppose
stick one on your bike. bunnyhop up a kerb. go over the bars, take it off and sell it on ebay

A mate of mine tried a coaster brake out. He rolled down a slope that had a drop at the bottom. As he lent back to level out for the drop the coaster locked on and send him over the bars ... from the top of the drop ... to flat!
I tried to use one for a while. I put one on an old BMX I used to cycle to work, and to make sure I USED the coaster brake, I took the cable brakes off. It was OK, and I didnt crash, but the roll back thing wasnt as good as I hoped it would be. And I didnt realise how much I pedaled backwards while just rolling around!

bitd i always rode a coaster brake, even on the ramps at birmingham wheels, all it takes is getting used to one :daumenhoch:

old birmingham wheels fella are we?
the clubs up and running again , and we need you old dudes to help make a proper bmx race track of it,
as the track is swinging toward the mtb 4x thing.
Plans are being put together for a skatepark section,
the whole thing is being run by one guy (mark sleigh)
he needs help.
-- I will put up a proper thread about it.

yeah mate used to love the skaters ramp, but hated to bmx pipe, harldly any flat and to much sharp transitions, plus it was built on a plinth which was 2 feet high, lol, i remeber a couple of guys that were good, a lad on a gree/white beat, he had curly blonde hair and a bit taller than Spen, but he was good( not you)? :LolLolLolLol:ohh, i got mugged there too, they took my orange performer with orange tuffs, the w...ker nearly come off it when he tried to pedal back, wish he had fookin killed himself the scum bag :knuppel2:
-
the guy on the beat was jason hewitt and the other good rider at the time was daz roberts, both from redditch, not the best of pics but i'll look for some better ones later.

what post were you supposed to be replying to? :crazy2:

Going back to the coasters I had one on my bike and was one of the first to try them where I lived. I was forever lending it to people to try. My friend got one and had a nightmare with it. He found at his cost that he would pedal back a little doing ariels and with the coaster fitted landed with the brake on.
If you have never ridden with one get used to it properly before going to mad. I seem to remember they were brilliant in the snow and on ice covered ponds when other brakes stopped working. Snow is also a brilliant way of making tyres really clean. ;)

sorry :-[ went a bit off subject there when birmingham wheels was mentioned!
