Title: First Build
Post by: Flake on November 23, 2005, 02:26 PM
Hi this is a great site been reading the posts for a while as a guest.  So being inspired by you lot a couple of weeks ago I aquired an 84 TA  in pretty bad condtion. I decided to tackle the task of restoring it last weekend (My first build since my firebird over 20 years ago), all the parts have been ordered and the frame has been stripped and is now in the powder coaters (getting it back tomorrow cannot wait  ;D).

What I would like from you guys are your opinions on the frame platform, the orignal chrome is well pitted. So should I strip the rest of the chrome off and get it powder coated to match the frame or just leave it as it is. Being as re-chroming is not an option due to cost.

Here are some pic's of the work in progress

hey flake!!
nice bike for a first build.
personally i like them in white, more than chrome

as for the platform (i presume you mean one of those bolt on thingies)

how bad is it? a guy on here was selling a nos-in-packet one a few days back

Welcome in, very nice TA.
As for your question about the Frame Platform, I would get it Powdercoated & see what it looks like, you could probally bye a good one for the price of Chroming the pitted one.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Yep the bolt on thingy is exacly what I'm talking about it's very pitted not just surface rust. It's  only going to cost me a fiver to get it coated. The reason I asked the qusetion is to convince myself that I don't need to get it re-chromed (you must know what it's like building your first bike and wanting it to be just right).

I have one more question. Where can I get a decent set of replacement TA stickers. I have looked round the net and all the sets I have seen have a diffrent downtube sticker to the one I removed from my bike. They all seem to have totally chro-mo tubing on them. The one I removed (see pic) is diffrent and I would like to get a set with the same sticker.

Hi Guys
Progress so far has been slow >:(. Got the frame back from the powder coaters and it looks amazing. Just waiting on the parts to arrive to finish the build off.  I'm hoping to get it finished by Xmas, so I can get up really early on Xmas morning  and ride it up and down our street in my PJ's and slippers (just like I did BITD). Here are some pic's of where I'm up to.

Tefore I have emailed regarding the sticker cheers mate.

Got home from work and there was a box of joy sitting on the step from Biagio. There was a problem getting the bars so its took nearly 3 weeks to recieve them. Headed straight for the garage and I now have this ;D

I am made up with way it's turning out. Just wish the tuffs were whiter but a least there alloy hubbed.

So I just need some washes before I stick the wheels on  and  a  new frame and stem pad (anyone got any for sale). Oh and the chain is going on. ;)

Finally decided that my TA needed the Freestyle platform after all  :-\
Just collected it from the chromers (Cheers Stu for heads up) and I'm well stoked with the result.

Title: Re: First Build
Post by: Flake on February 03, 2006, 10:38 PM
theRuler: Dude I've debated whether or not to put the platform on for 2 months now and caim to the conclusion. Get it re-chromed nice and shiny and stick it on, to me it's part of the bike's history. And if it looks cack I can always take it off. :daumenhoch:
Title: Re: First Build
Post by: jimwise68 on February 04, 2006, 10:24 PM
I too think that the freestyle frame kills the bike, it looks awesome without it.

I wouldn't have one on my TA it looks to" aftermarket" for me.

My opinion only of course!

Sweet ride thou and nice build.
Title: Re: First Build
Post by: Flake on February 05, 2006, 07:16 AM
Jim I was of the exact same opinion (why spoil the bike if it looks good already) That's why it's took me 2 months to make up my mind. But alas the chrome got the better of me :smitten:

As for opinions they are all welcome positive and negative. Building bikes is such a personal thing and it's refreshing to hear other RAD members views :daumenhoch:

Indeed Flake, it would be very boring if everyone's bike looked the same. They were individual BITD and that is what made adding bits to your bike exciting.

I actually think I get more of a buzz now, waiting for new bits for my bike than I did 20 odd years ago!  :D

Nice to see another top TA build too. I was even looking for one when I bought mine, I wanted a Ripper. But this baby come along at the right time so I indulged. Glad I did now, think I prefer it to a Ripper now.
